View Full Version : Tech question... LCD TV woes

Hmm, strange one this.

Last night, my Phillips FlatTV (forget the model number, but I'm pretty sure at this point it's irrelevant) was working fine.

It was turned off softly (power switch on side), left on at the wall socket as we always do.

This morning, turn it on, and there's sound, but the display isn't quite right. There's vertical stripes down across the entire width, each maybe 2-3 pixels wide. These change colour whenever the picture that should be on the TV changes. There's also approx 4-5 horizontal lines that are about 1 pixel wide, randomly spread out down the height of the screen.

So far, my thoughts are incorrect voltage being supplied to the LCD controller (maybe a blown capacitor in the PSU), or the screen needs re-torquing. Both are jobs I should be able to sort out, thankfully.

Ideas anyone? (Queue K "hit it with a hammer").

Nope, t'is 3years old and didn't take out a a warranty longer than the legal default (1 year).

That's why I'm quite happy to attack it with a screwdriver & soldering iron.

I had a TV this happened to, it was sent back and deemed broken so they offered a replacement (out of warranty). I'd chase it up with Philips, even out of warranty an LCD should last longer.

Hmm. Interesting. I'm in two minds about that...

On the one hand, it's not under warranty, so I wouldn't expect them to give a damn. I'm also fairly confident that I can fix it (if it's the causes that I mentionned). Also, it was the last of the line from the shop, and I got a discount for that, and the fact it was out on display in the shop.

On the other hand, you don't get if you don't ask...

Did you have to pay anything to get them to look at it, or indeed pay anything towards the replacement?

Philips are ******s. I would never buy another Philips set. I had one go after 3 years and they were totally disinterested. I know it's out of warranty, but 3 years??? When I was little, some time ago, TV's used to last forever.

Hmmm, those would be CRT TVs. I'd argue they don't last forever, having seen many many more failures with CRTs than I have with LCD/Plasma.

have you tried turning it off and on again? no seriously...

Switch it off at the wall, unplug it for a minute or two, then plug it back in, leave it for a minute or two then switch it on

Don't laugh, this has worked for me when my Sky+ box had a brain fade...

Yup. Also tried soft factory reset (press & hold power button). In that case, the TV came on, went off, then the power light started flashing (so I knew it'd done it's stuff).

Still the same. :(

Are all your scarts / leads inserted properly. I've had a scart lead come loose and had sound but no picture.

Yup. My 3rd old was playing in the lounge with his plastic sword this morning. Scarts/Co-ax connections were the first thing I suspected.

Keep the thoughts/advice coming folks. :)

Hello Baph,

For my sins I manage an electrical retail store and have spoken to our service dept about you problem, His inital thoughts are that it is a panel failure and would require a new one but without seeing it he could not be sure.

When we have had a massive failure in the past like that the service dept has looked at the product and est the repair (most companys will charge for this) Then the customer has written to the manufacturer requesting assistance with the cost of repair.

Used to deal with Phillps but there out of warranty assistance is very poor.

Good luck. :p

See, this is why I love the .Org. :D Ask a specific question, and wait, you get someone with direct experience posting, usually the same day. :D

Thanks 650SFTT. :)

I'm pretty much of the opinion that if I can't repair it myself, or at least identify where the fault is (so I have an idea of cost), then I'll just buy a new TV. I've seen similar ones (in terms of size/features) for around ?400.

It'll be a PITA if I have to buy a new TV, but I'd rather do that tonight than have earache from the Mrs & kids all weekend.

I've dealt with laptop LCD's in the past, and the way I see it, if the TV can't be fixed easily, it'll be spare parts for numerous electronics projects (and it'll actually come in damn handy too...).

I'll leave you to consider the morals of this issue, and this isn't something I've done or recommend, but.....

Got accidental damage on your household insurance? Drop a cup of tea down the back/tin of paint on it/etc, quick claim later (less excess), one new tv. What I've had suggested to me in the past.

My brother has done this a couple of times with computers & the like.

Again, that would mean earache from others in the house for not being able to watch the telly. That's not an option in my house, trust me. :( I'm getting enough earache whilst I'm at work & it's just the Mrs & youngest at home.

Though to be fair I have replied by text "If you're that bothered have a trip into town, I've got my card, feel free to use yours."

Anyone think I should emmigrate today?

Telling a woman she can go shopping? I'd have thought she'd have loved the idea. I just hope the credit crunch doesn't bite too hard.

They picked it up and covered the costs, they then deducted one years 'use' out of what they deemed acceptable - a 6 year life, and offered the cash back.
This was all through currys who weren't too willing until they got a stroppy letter ;)

It might be worth trying a large change of temperature - stick it in the garage and let it get cold - any difference may add weight to your 'retorquing' theory (I assume you mean the lcd panel edge connectors?)

Hmm, another good idea.

But yea, the edge connectors - retorquing the panel basically involves unbolting the panel & letting the screen 'destress' itself. Then bolting it back together again.

Apparently stress in the LCD panel accounts for quite a few issues, as the weight of the screen rests mainly on the bottom brackets.

If I can't fix the TV, there's some programming work I could do with getting on with anyway...

Whatever happened to sitting down as a family after dinner and talking to each other about the day and what you've been doing?

Have a nice weekend, whatever happens ;)
