I have been thinking a bit over the past week, that is something I would like to do. I have been lets under a lot of stress of pressure of late so if a good job or opportunity came up them right now I would think of taking it.

So what jobs can I do out there that involves bikes, that is fun and intresting? It has to be something that hold my interest and something that I can delvop and grow into.

I was thinking as try to go for a reporter for a magazine ect when I got my degree. The only thing that I could see holding me back was no having a bike licence. But now I do.

Just thinking out loud, to see what I could do instead. So any ideas then??

So once a week roughly....

Well, mechanicing on your own isn't a long term prospect, they're making bikes less and less serviceable if you're not a main dealer

I do like my job, the problem is that I don't like being rookie.....and I have been beating myself up about what I got wrong ect. Its just way the way things are when you are new. But I'll feel different again tomorrow about everything.

I'm just very impatient andd want to know and do everything now, why wait eh?

What I'm do want is to have a second job, something to along side what I do now. I have plenty of talent and skill to almost anything. So the question should have been what can do as a second job, or get involved with for fun?

When I get sorted I intend to marshal, so that may be a good place start or not?

As for riding for work, that what itend to do anyway hopefully soon as.

I don't think marshals get paid?? Saying that they might?!?!

BT, you are very keen, but have you ever though that taking on another big project/thing in your life is just biting even a larger bit of cake?

Something is going to give if you divide your attention too much ;)

If you are still keen on the racing/track bike then why not just concentrate on cracking that ... there is still plenty to learn there, not just riding but spannering too 8) ... or is it about the money??

Have you booked your next trackday? Have you got your bike fixed since the mishap at silverstone?

Nope most people do it for the enjoyment.

I Marshall for one of the bigger club racing groups and they give you £10 per day for you to put towards lunch or fuel etc.

There is always free camping and hog roast etc in the evenings and a real good atmosphere.

We are going to some european races this year to belgium etc and they pay for your ferry and accomodation and other stuff where they can.

Its fun but most of the time you would rather be the one racing than the one picking people up :(

Advantages are you sometimes get invited to marshall at bigger meets like BSB/WSB/MotoGP

Nope the bike is bits at the moment as it does need work doing to it, but I'm stuck. So its not going any where right now.

I'm have also been working on rasing some money, so should hear before the end of the month what suppourt I'm getting there.

Also moving house currently live out of bags at the moment until my new place is ready. I couldn't stand where I was before, so had leave.

This time next week I'll be on way to Belgium, I'm doing a race over there so you know one thing at a time.

I wanted to Marshall this year this year, it more a case of having enough leave do it. Nope not really about the money either, I think it may be hard to cram anything else into what I'm doing. I more than occupied with work, the bike and everything else going on.

This is true. I have comparatively very little interest in riding socially/for pleasure when I am riding long distances for work regularly.

I would echo this, I have only ever met you once but its like the completely hyper procastrinating project managers at my work. You see them coming a mile off and they take no advice, they are so full of energy and ideas its gets on top of them, stresses them out, and sadly inevitably they fail.

They just need to calm down.

Its within your job, so you dont have to start from the bottom (you've already done some of the work to become a police officer). So all you gotta do, is find the appropriate people to say "how do I become a police outrider?"

I have a firm idea where I'm going and why. It takes more time than I thought to get to where I want to be and doing what I want to do. I have a lot of learning to do right now, which takes time.

So taking a step back allows me to sort myself out.

I was just having a bad when I though what else is out there, I'm sure you all have bad days at work. It will take a few years before I can anything other than I am right now, just the way it is. It will take that long to gain evidence for the application, I have to apply to do the job, which I may not get first time round.

Blue light riding/driving ain't about being fast, its about driving to the system and attitude, vision and planning are the key things. Whats the point crashing on the way there? That casues far more problems.

I intend to be gaining experice next week, from some very good riders which will help with my riding in general. Its not about winning or going fast this is about learning and having fun. Fun being the primary reason I ride anyway.

Nah I'm using the road, as it has to have an MOT to this as its a road race. I may try to get an daylight MOT for the race bike next year, but it will require a legalish can for that.

Yeah my first event is an international one.

When are you going to get the race bike fixed and get out on a trackday?

I have been keen to get onto another trackday soon (weather is great) so could make sure we go on the same one if you like :)

Back to the thread title - job with motorbikes for you
There is clearly only one answer
Traffic cop & get on bikes as much as you are able.
I didn't realise outrider was a specific job, thought they used traffic, or is it SEG? Think I would prefer general traffic than SEG (more variety)

As above & with your history mechanic is out of the question & traffic has got to pay & be much better than courier :???:
And what do you mean "Blue light riding/driving ain't about being fast," surely they have to be the fastest on the road :???: from point A to point B

I think he means its about being safe and fast ... being rapid but as safe as possible is key ... this is why I still think it is impossible to have a truly FAST coppa as they have to keep more room for error to keep a 'safety' margin ;) ... if you get someone like Ghost rider, who has talent and no consideration for safety, a coppa isn't gonna stand a chance! ;)

Stu
13-05-08, 12:03 PM
OK maybe not Ghost rider
But do they not get their man in the end? :???:

example, I was chased by Police twice. Once at least a mile along Embankment by a cop car & they had to get in their car first. Second time by a bike for at least 4 miles on the A3 from 30 limit through 40 and to 50 and he had to turn around first. Both times they caught me ergo, they get to drive/ride faster than me when they do their job compared to me doing my job (well commuting to/from).

Paramedic?

I don't actually think their is anything that a) pays and b) would not take all the fun and interest away from biking - main one for me would be having to ride in ****ty weather.

Probably being a bit thick here, but if you are plod (or nearly plod?) then traffic would seem to be a natural choice - at least until the novelty wears off........but if you wanna use yer brain to the max I am sure even plod have specialities that would be suitable.....and even some stuff that could later be applied outside the Public sector once you have qualified up and have experiance.....ain't gonna say "Interesting" for the next 20 years, but........

You could do a trillion miles on the road and it wouldn't prepare you for racing ...

That is a bit like saying that swimming every day prepares you for canoeing. Sure due to the nature of what it is, being a good swimmer is a bonus, but it won't get you very far in actual canoeing itself!! ;)

Surely the experience is going to make you much more "part" of whatever bike you're on?

I agree that it's never going to be the same as actual track time.

It'd be natural to think that, but I actually think you will find that road riding is a hindrance to racing, not an asset!! ;) ...

Presuming they were doing it before/alongside racing, a lot of racers quit road riding as it negatively effects their track performance!!

I seriously considered it when I was racing proper, but using the bike to commute was just too useful!! ... I did however STOP going for 'joy' rides on my road bike :)

Some of the fastest riders/racers had NEVER had a road bike ;)

Many cite that the road is too dangerous - poor surfaces, changing surfaces, othe road users, hazards, etc etc.

I think that road-riding is too slow for practising racing. Your brain just never gets calibrated to think that fast for those speeds

There are an increasing number of jobs and departments in the police for bikers, just stick with it and apply for one when you can.

I would'nt say I am that fast, but I make good progress where I can, at the end off the day I still want to go home, no point going stupid!

I think so mate, i think so. I have spent possibly the last 5 or 6 weekends with the missus, and yeah we have our ups and downs etc. But its a year next month that we have been together, we both have tough times at home, we were just talking about living together and working costs out etc, still I need to get a better paid job from what it seems. But looks a good idea and would make us both a lot happier(things going on behind the scenes at hers that she doesn't need really).

I did however seek advice from Shelly and BluePete re Police and she has put me at ease with what and how to go about things if that is what I fancy.

Hows KD school coming along kiddo?

Dude, if you are going to try and shack up with your missus for the first time (and neither of you currently own a property) FFS rent a property to begin with. You will prolly have a minimum of 6 month contract anyway, this is actually good as it is long enough for you to see if you can handle living together (you squeezing the toothpaste from the middle might send her loopy after week 5 - her leaving a massive 'floater' in the sh1tter might send you insane after 3 days ... :D .. basically moving in together could cement of destroy your relationship!! ;)).

Also house prices are on the drop at the mo ... the money you are spending on rent could well be offset by reduction in equity if you were to buy tomorrow .... but the main thing is that renting is easy to get out of 6 months down the line if things didn't work out ...

You are your own man, but please consider what I just said!! ;)

As for KD school, it ran out of momentum I am afraid!! :(

Beds police are looking for people now, and I saw an ad for the met as well last week. So if you want to I would apply now, though I have no clue what wait is now or anything about the training casue it changed just after I did mine.

While I was getting some cash for my trip I asked the bank what kind of mortage they would give me, which turned out a max of £150k reypament, which was £940/month there abouts.

Two problems with this, I can't afford to make the payments unless I get quite a bit more money and the fact £150k buys bugger all. Oh top of that I would £6k depoist, then fees ect as well. I'm screwed I will never beable to buy anything.

Yup I don't intend going mega fast on the open, roads for reasons Matt said. Though Yesterday I wasn't going slow.....

Dont you have to be in the force for two years before you can go to a special role? I say sell the road bike, get a pan or beamer to practice on til you can get a job as a super special biker plod, get a mortgage, get a shared ownership flat (mine'll be up for sale soon as I get off my hairy harris) oh and get your Mum and Dad to get out a car loan for the deposit for my er your flat! Sorted. There are shared ownership homes out there. I've grown out of mine what with the patter of little feet ('er indoors).

Yes as I am doing you must do 2 years as a rookie before you can do anything! Why earth sell my SV? Are you mad as with its a bit more complaited in get the job you want as well. I'm currently looking at doing a sideways step to where I want to be. Who knows yet.
