As title really, do you always look at the price of things before buying them/when considering buying them?

I am not sure I have ever bought ANYTHING without wanting to know the price first ...

I think even if I won the lottery I'd still look at the price of stuff ... its kinda ingrained now ...

Just wondered if anyone out there never looks, or at least sometimes don't look?

Hmm, if it's an impulse buy, then yeah, I'll look at how much it costs & then decide if it's worth it.

If it's something small that I need, then cost doesn't usually matter. For example, loctite threadlock that I bought a couple of days ago, no idea how much it was, didn't look/listen to the cashier.

Tesco shopping is generally the same too, I buy what we need, and however much it costs, is what I pay.

My other half though, is a nightmare. She'll happily spend 45 mins trying to work out the cost per litre of 5 different brands of washing up liquid, then factor in if there's any multi-buy savings etc etc. Drives me insane that she stands still looking at the cost so long. Just buy the stuff already!!

45 minutes is quite bad I would agree :p However I can understand how she does it, I take ages choosing stuff sometimes, even if it's what chocolate bar to get at the counter.....usually always give up and go for the usual Doubledecker though

I'm evidently more like your Mrs than you ... luckily I don't need to do the sums using all my fingers and toes, so my decisions are normally done in seconds, not 45 minutes!! (the odd trade-off (i.e. is it 'worth' the extra) decision can take a bit longer mind ;)) ... but fact is, like your Mrs, I can't help myself, I still work out how much one thing is compared to another, factoring in 'offers' and if I could get it cheaper elsewhere ... at that point factoring in fuel costs etc ... not only am I tight/don't like to be wasteful with no need, but I like outsmarting the system/getting best from it!! 8)

I have bought stuff just coz I wanted it, regardless of price, but I've never just picked something up and never even looked at what it was/is ...

I think I've only ever been on one food shopping trip where I could just walk past the shelves and put anything in without thinking and then that was when me ma was paying for my supplies....hasn't happened since though!

Even if someone else was paying, out of habit I'd still look!!!

I used to love the stationary cupboard at work ... walking out without paying just seemed 'wrong' though ... and why when going in for say a pen, did I always pick up something I simply didn't need ... like some quill ink ... or a 'confidential' rubber stamp thingy!!?? :D It was all free, so I just couldn't stop myself!!

Two thoughts:

1. It is ALWAYS worth paying more for Fairy washing up liquid. Supermarket own brands do not get the dishes squeaky clean.

2. Things are only a bargain if you were going to buy them in the first place.

Always looking at price before buying isn't the same thing as always buying the cheapest ;)

No.

I decide what I want, then find out the price if it is "expensive".....of course I usually have a good idea what something is worth beforehand.....if the price seems fair enuf I buy....I figure life is too short to chase "bargains"....if I was that bothered about money I would work a lot more......easy come......easy go

I had a good idea that an SV would be relatively cheap from simply looking at it - so the deal was pretty much done by the time I got to talking money at the dealer....but 10% either way was never going to be deal breaker.....still part of me wishes I had spent the cash (and a fair bit less) on an older Litre bike.......but the Licence is happy I didn't!

Exactly!!

I generally don't go wandering around the shops. I decide what I want, go out, get it & come home.

I can easily do a weekly shop in 20mins flat (including queuing at the tills). I know what I need to get, and I know where in the supermarket it is. One trip down each isle is all that's required.

My other half, takes 3hours+ to do the shopping. That's if she's not with the kids!! With the kids, they get bored, she gets stressed, and everything takes even longer.

I'm exactly the same for clothes etc though, I know what I want/need to buy, so I go to the shop that sells what I'm after. If I see something I like that'll fit me, quick try it on, then buy & home. If I don't see something immediately on display, and it's not an essential buy, I come home without buying.

I paid £1.30 more buying, A dairy milk bar, a turkish delight bar and a tub of pringles when bought from Sainsburys, compared to when I buy them from Asda.

So yes I look at prices :(

I tend to look at the price of how much it is by the kg or ltr, this will tell me the ture cost, plus it all so tells me if its to cheep and nasty.
NB this only works on food and drinks not bikes ;)

In true BBC manner, 'other main brands are available too' ;)

I tried 'value' washing up liquid before and it was a joke, but to be honest, I find little difference between normal own-brand liquid and main brand Fairy/Persil etc etc .. at the end of the day who do you think make the washing up liquid for ASDA/Tescos etc etc ... ;)

Therefore I don't buy 'value' type stuff as it is ineffective and false economy, but I don't see the need to buy main brand as it doesn't give enough benefit over own-brand. Now I could afford the extra 30p (or whatever) for the Fairy (which IS going to be the same if not slightly better than own brand), but I can't stop myself from thinking that way!!

I`m with Baph on this one , one of my ex Girlfriends used to buy things like "Hello" and "Chat" and "Gossipy Harridan Fishwifery" or other such Horror magazines for women , she would stop at the wall inside the door of whatever supermarket was our favourite at the time . I would actually be wheeling the stuff out of the door (shopped and paid for) before she`d even made her choice of which detestable magazine she wanted . I`d mither her for the keys to the car and be loaded up and done . People have been known to throw themselves to one side as I come around the corner with a suicidal supermarket shopping trolley on 2 wheels .

The best thing about it is , I got shopping cheaper , quicker and it lasted longer than when she went and got stuff which seemed to evaporate mere seconds after getting through the door . I agree that Value stiff is just plain Cack and isn`t really value in the long run , you can get better for a few pence more . I only really look at price if it`s a major purchase , then a few minutes on the web usually brings up a satisfactory price and a purchase is made . I don`t spend too long on it all as I`m a dab hand at finding cheap prices very quickly .

I'm a right tight stingy bugger!

So much so that before I buy ANYTHING off the net, (when it's already at its lowest price,) I'll always try and find a free discount code to use for either £5 or 10% off!!!
Have managed to get some right bargins over the years! :D

when doing food shopping I have £40 cash with me and buy what I can for that. I buy comfort (cos I love the smell) but cheapy washing powder. I get whatever washing liquid is on offer. that also goes for crisps and bread. I know tinned tomatoes are cheaper in asda but the fruit is better in morrison so I usually go to both shops and buy my toiletries in poundland. girl i work beside spends £120 a week on her shopping and has take away twice a week as there is nothing in the house to eat???

Sounds very much like my type of shopping, spread between two or three shops in a big shop. I don't tend to change what I eat too much so I know what I usually get and what prices they are. Special offers and reduced stuff is what I'm really bad for

yup Im a tight wad.
when looking at something I want ,I will check the price and then go home.If I really want it then I will make a special trip back to the shop and buy it.(talking large items here though). Most times I never bother going back ,thus proving to myself that I musn't really have wanted it at all.

Don't think so, even if knowing the price is going to make no difference to purchasing something or not, I still want to know what chunk it's going to take out of the wallet :-P

The exception to the rule would be the 4am death-burger after a bucket of ale.

Exactly ;)

Drinks down a pub are an interesting one ... if it is a pub you have never been to, generally you have to order a drink with no idea of the price .. again, I'd be buying them anyway, but I don't like the fact I am ordering something I have no idea what the price is .. and as you know, drinks prices can vary quite a bit from place to place!!

If you are getting laid at the end then it matters little, but if you are simply on a pub crawl and buying your mates a round then it does ... especially if they bought the last lot down weatherspoons for say £7.50 and you just paid £15 at the next pub for exactly the same order; that stings a bit!! :( ... is that being tight?!?!

That is one good thing about not having any friends like me ... your rounds are fairly cheap!! :D
