View Full Version : Nodding
Who does, :) who doesn't and are there any particular bikers who won't or don't nod back ?
Is it another one of those great things about biking or is it silly ?....
I do to all proper bikers and sometimes to the peds for the fun of the "did he just nod at me moment" most people nod back classic owners sometimes don't but then again they are probably more concerned with remembering where all the things that are falling off are going
I try to nod, but when there is a group of people together I dont as its impossible and you look like a nutcase, also when your in a place that is packed with bikes like matlock or something you just cant.
I think they all look stupid doing it. So just ride past laughing.

I nod when I can! :)
I nod, ecxept at tractor, sorry harley riders cos they have never nodded to me.
BMW GS riders seem to stick their foot out instead.

I always nod, even at proper geared 50cc bikes (not rev and go peds though).
It used to be cut and dry with who would and wouldn't nod, but these days I've even had a few harley riders nod, and some people who would appear to be 'weathered' riders on sports tourers who you would expect to nod, haven't.
It's odd days we live in!

On my way to work I always seem to ride past the same guy on a 1200 bandit. If I'm on the SV I always get a nod from him, but have never had one when I'm on my rat bike.
Just goes to show how peoples opinions towards bikes/nodding vary.

Do you nod if you're walking but kitted up with lid in hand or just when you're on the bike

geared biked with L plates definitely deserve a nod!
usually the old gits on classic bikes or those adventure boorman-mcgregor things that don't nod back.
sports bike riders nearly always seem to nod.

I always nod, makes for interesting riding when you going through the twisties at a ton though and pass some bikers coming to a bend.
Passed some guy on the duel carrageway on mon and he was jumping around waving to say hi, even though he was on the other side of the road
waving to people on the other side has to be done

I always Nod. Sometimes wave if I feel like it. A part of Biking imo, its what makes us different to Car drivers. :D

I had a guy talk to me at lights today. He said "that's not the original handlebar, is it?"
I was gobsmacked, cos sure enough I have one from a bandit 600 on, but it is like half an inch different! Looks mainly identical! What a guy (riding an old CBR600f plowsie style).
Nod when I can, even if they dont nod back. All part of being part of the biking fraternity.

For the year I had my geared 50 + L plates, I always nodded. Admittedly, it looked a lot bigger than a 50 but still, I can only think of two riders who didn't nod back!

Because keeping your nose clean for 30 minutes and doing a U-turn makes you a better person of course...

Because I think that they are uninsured little chav-casey-stoner-wannbes that are too busy trying to race my SV on thier sticker-suped-up-70cc.
They also try to race-filter through traffic, whilst I'm going through slowly - knowing that I can kane their @rses whenever I want. All it takes is a blip of the throttle, and away she goes. They don't deserve a nod in my books. Those on 250cc+ don't count though.
PS. I always nod to bikers, which is a bit stupid in London, because no one hardly nods back - a bit ignorant down there!!.
Just my ten pence worth.

Indeed that sounds very fair to me. I also try to do this whenever I am given the opportunity. For me though it doesn't really have to be practical. But what has this to do with nodding

Not ignorant, we just value our neck muscles! I don't know where in London you are referring to but there are literally hundreds of bikes on my commute, and I'd get a very sore neck if I nodded to every one. In London, I restrict it to bikes of the same model as I'm riding, usually...outside of London I nod to most bikes, but there's a lot less so it doesn't hurt afterwards ;)
classic owners sometimes don't but then again they are probably more concerned with remembering where all the things that are falling off are going
Do you mean their bike or the owners themselves, or both:)
As far as I can remember it was a wave in the old days.

Thanks for the trophy Yorkie.
I'm not usually one to stereo-type so widely, but nearly everyday I have a scooter trying to race me???. This morning, I even had a CUB90 trying it.
That's why I just laugh when they start reving all those 70cc's at me, rather than nod to them. I occasionally teach the little scallies a lesson and tear off (within the legal limits of course), but that's not my style of everyday riding.

One waved at me on the A51 the other day, although I think he was sneakily trying to distract me from the GATSO just up the road ;-). Most bike cops are good lads.
Does anyone stick a leg out?
It's the way they do things in France, and I quite liked it. Also more convenient a way of thanking car drivers than taking your hand off the bars...

France, I tend to wave left hand [bikes], right foot for cars when they pull over, and nod. Not all at the same time, that would look a bit silly :p

You have to be very careful, as over here there's an offence known as "indecent exposure"
Also in the event of an accident, road rash can be very painful, so wear protection whenever nobbing at other bikers... :-P
Who does, :) who doesn't and are there any particular bikers who won't or don't nod back ?
I don't nod to bikers because I think they are all obnoxious antisocial ba$tards who are out to annoy as many of us decent road users and car drivers as possible. I try to run them off the road so I can use the streets as my own personal racetrack. I especially hate those on loud bikes with fancy named exhausts and anything that looks chopper-style or cruiserish because the ploughs they tow around mess up the road.

I've seen a few do it over here it makes sense but non biking car drivers
1. probably won't be looking out for a bike as they usually don't anyway
2. too busy twiddling with phones and bacon sarnies and sat navs to even notice
3. will probably think you are trying to kick the car in front and just reinforce to themselves how anti social and horrible them bikers are
I was out with the dog the other day and a VFR went past that caught my eye. I think I was staring too much, it nodded and I subconsciously nodded back.
I was just a pedestrian. How odd.
Not sure if its recommended to nod at all pedestrians, that could cause RSI.
got to give a nod. am always left a little hurt and upset with a single tear rolling down my cheek when the nod is not returned - why do they toy with my emotions.
thinks its just some people are rude/arrogant b*stards and some aren't.
Thinking more about this, sometime I am a reciprocal nodder, a.k.a
"to be nodded at, is to nod"
and
"he (she) who nods last, nods least"
Shame on me.
I find myself nodding at bikers even when I'm in the car.
What must they think?!!:D

I am often the nodder and not the noddee. Noddy, haha
passed 11 guys last night on my way to watford... 3 noded back, and the worst "group" who dont nod back imo are delivery riders ( not your fast food guys) for paper work, medical supplies etc... never get anything from them...

I am probably a bit older than most of you guys, at 38 years and passed my bike test in 1991. Here's my view of it. People like myself who are easy going and only ride my bike when I enjoy it, nod at everyone. Only the uptight people don't nod back. Those occasional snobs on BMWs.
Don't expect people to nod when going into a busy junction for obvious reasons, and don't expect everyone to nod. Usually you can see people glancing over you'll always get a response and the best way is to develop a sideways nod which is almost like moving your chin to the side.
I take the trouble to talk to the young lads on little plastic twist and go scooters if I stop at the lights with one, because they seem to get a thrill from a bloke on a proper bike aknowledging them. I suppose if I was 17 today, I would be riding a thing like that because that would be what I could afford. My first 4 bikes were all less than 140 quid.
Don't assume it is only bikers who aknowledge each other when on the road. People in old sports cars all make a kind of gay wave to each other.
People in camper vans do a sort of wave too, while it is less gay it is a kind of embarrased wave meaning kind of (i don't drive this bloody thing all the time)

i try to nod when i can just to show acknolegement of another rider id say 8 out of 10 reply , a friend drives a subaru impreza and they give or get a wave to/from another impreza driver , i even say hi to scooters as they may be our next generation of bikers ( when they grow up ) but i soon learn which ones answer back . guess i treat people how i would like to be treated :)

Out on Saturday I found myself on the reverse route of a bike rally! There were literally hundreds of bikes over the next 20 miles or so, most of which I nodded at! Felt like my head was falling off by Welshpool! :D

I always nod, its part of the fun of being a biker and feeling like you belong to a community. Car drivers stick their fingers up to each other, we say hello to each other. Sometimes I may wave. Most people around here nod back, some wave, one guy who had an open face helmet on an old bike (he was an old guy) gave a huge smile and said hello while waving on the weekend and his happiness just made me smile and feel glad to be on two wheels. Agree that most Harley riders dont nod - they are too hard for that sort of thing no doubt, they prob say hello to each other by headbutting each other while sinking beers in a pub. I wonder when "nodding" started though and how.....
Car drivers who make a visible effort to get out my way and give me space while filtering I ususally give a quick wave or thumb up. Lorry drivers I find pretty good in slow moving traffic, they always tend to be on the ball with their mirrors and see you coming. Well, they do up around here anyway, maybe its different in other parts of the country.
Never seen anyone pat their heads at me though, and not sure I would do it myself unless i wanted to appear as if I had a bee in my helmet - if there are cops ahead we normally flash a few times, and do the "slowing down" indication with the hand followed by a point in the direction of the cops. Happened to be me actually the other day, wasnt cops but stupid residents with flourescent jackets on who had been given a speed camera (god that winds me up), a few bikers warned me prior to my approach, I had no cars behind me, so I deicided to take the P and went past them at 10mph giving them a friendly wave as I did.... come to think of it, not sure if I used all my fingers though.... hmm, darn gloves!!!

"residents with speed cameras"
it gets worse!
I find myself nodding at bikers even when I'm in the car.
I keep doing that.
I nod at virtually every powered bike thing I see in time, including domino's mopeds with L plates. However when there is a group of 3 or more bikes, 1 nod for the lot is all they get.

Last summer I passed a biker while I was going to the Knott End meet who did this. Never seen it before so slowed down looking at him thinking WTF is he trying to do, went past round a blind corner, and 10 cops with speed cameras in church yard pulling all speeding bikes going past. They got quite a few, including idiots who must have gone past them on the way there but forgot on the way back.

Yeh I nod to bikers, even if they dont nod back its just a way of saying "hi" doesnt cost anything just politeness....World would be such a better place if we all just were bit more generous and polite... Even when i walk my dog always say hi to dog walkers going by even if they dont say hi back.. some people give you such funny looks as if its wrong to say "hi or alright or hello" but i dont know why just im being polite.

Same when walking/climbing/exploring on foot anywhere. It's quite interesting to see people's responses as I look quite a youngen, but not a rude ******* like a lot seem to be! I always say "Morning/Afternoon/Hello/Watch-the-dog-****" etc.

I always nod and if theres a group tend to nod every 3 or 4 as generally all will see if their not too spread out. Got a great nod from a guy that could have been in ZZTop on his tractor this evening last of a group of about 15 of which most nodded or waved even the pillions.
