View Full Version : A question for the biker girls.....
the boys probably don't care that much.
I need some ideas, how to keep my hair in reasonable shape wearing a helmet. I go dancing a lot and would like to look nice-ish, when I get there (The same applies for my upcoming bike holiday). In good weather, I don't want to go by car just because of my hairdo. I've got a just over chin length bob.
I'd be grateful for any suggestions.
Thanks
Linda

Ah, I dont think theres any way to combat the curse of the helmet hair.
Its ying and yang you see; for every good thing that happens (riding bike), something bad will offset it (helmet hair)
Mind you, if there IS a way, then im sure my girlfreind would love to know

+1, my girlfriends determines and rota's her time on the bike depending on when her hair needs doing etc, although she has started having it curly which is nice and the bike doesnt effect it.

I am afraid that there is no really good way of over coming helmet hair except going for the more trendy, less tidy look.
I give my hair a good brushing before and after a ride and carry a hair brush in my handbag. Hair spray does make a difference when I am out on the mountain bike, but it does get a bit itchy with a full face lid.
As for Carol, she just looks great with the windswept look!

Mines long and in layers which are very short on the top - I put the long bit into a plait and when I remove my lid I just ruffle the top loose bits and hey presto.....d'oh - I have messy helmet hair!!
sorry that didnt help did it! but I did once meet a girl biker in the ladies at a bike event with the most amazing glossy sleek straigtened hair and I asked her how she managed that - she said she used "product" (not sure what that is!), straightened it and then brushed it through when she removed her lid - hth

Solution - Don't wear a helmet.
Teacher - "And we all know what that means don't we kids?"
Altogether - "Don't ride your bike without a helmet"
Seriously, being a bit of a tart meself I used to worry about the state of my hair for when I was trying to impress the missus, now after 11 months, I shaved it off and said its so much better for helmet hair love :D
Wear a Balaclava is the best option, put your hair in there perfectly, slip the helmet over your head and your away.

Clearly she was lying and didn't arive by bike, as the curse of helmet hair cannot be avoided!
so we're onto a strategy of 'helmet hair' minimisation instead - try:
not riding immediately after washing hair (when it's most easily 'influenced')
use hairspray
take hair band to tie hair back if long enough
having scuffy hair which you can ruffle into shape when you get off
wear a slinky outfit to distract attention from your hair ;)HTH :D

I use products before and after straightening and my hair still looks a mess when I remove my helmet!!
I don`t think there`s any solution.... i tried having layers cut in but now when i take my helmet off the bit of hair that`s layered looks like it`s been crimped and the rest just does its own thing! I have found not washing it the same day you`re riding helps, not tried the hairspray route and even if i tie it back I find it doesn`t help much.

Ladies with long hair, a French plait is both sexy and practical.
(Well I like them and more biker ladies with French Plaits and leathers is to be encouraged! :safe:)

or find a place where there's lots of dancing bikers, then everyone will be in the same boat and you'll fit right in
Anyway hair is meant to be ruffled ;-)

buy an arab scarf from an army surplus store or indeed an asian clothes shop. I have a rather superb purple one. Im indoors wears one too. Shove your hair in a pont tail. Make a triangle with said scarf, so pointy bit pointing down, place across face first, wrap round the back of neck and tie under your chin, make sure pony tail is wrapped underneath. Its worked for me for years and mine is quite long and fine....haven't lost it yet.
Or alternatively I've got a windproof bike tube thing, you pull it over your head, covering your nose and it keeps your hair in quite nicely...HTH
I have to have something wrapping my hair up as its so fine and if its flapping around out of my helmet it get so knotted it breaks very easily and halves in width and length in one brush. My fella is the same, and hes not bald yet...lol

Oh and P.s this is very tried an tested in the old fashioned bike type burds, we all wear them. I've been plonked on the back of a bike for about 8 yrs now and my hairs never gone less than shoulder length, currently its boob length

That's what my eldest daughter does with her hair when she's on her bike. It has the advantage of looking long and shaggy permed when she undoes it too, which really suits her. Caz's hair is half way down her back just past her shoulder blades.

I wear a bandana, but then I have long hair, so it doesn't look tragic when arriving at said destination. I did get one of those hair tie things - a bit of denim with poppers on, but it tends to fall out. Bit pants really.
The bandana and two plaits, keeps it all in check for me

And this is a bad thing because........?
Plaits do tend to look good, epecially, as Luckypants says, with leathers.
I tend to go for the dishevelled look, but have occasionally been known to plait my hair. I usually tuck it into a neck-tube to stop it getting too windswept and knotted.

you prefer your women with no hair then do you? :p
For me...
Get married, have kids, turn 35 and by the time you've done all that you are so haggard and tired looking that you couldn't give a stuff what your hair looks like anyway.....
On a more practical note some clarins alberto vidal balsom Oil of U35E anti ageing hairgelmoussespraywax always works a treat....
Sorry thats about as much help as a wasp in your crash helmet.....
Works for Demi

I'm 46, have 4 kids, an ex-wife and a few ex-long-term-girlfriends. I don't look haggard and I have very little grey hair. It's all to do with attitude and outlook on life.

I have long hair and I braid it and then use a tube neckscarf to keep it out of the wind, then I usually just shake it out when at the destination! If I was you I would go with a ruffled look as there is no way of keeping hair smooth and silky when a helmet is involved!!
I went on my first bike holiday last year and found it best to wash on an evening after the days riding, saying that we were in South of France so it was quite warm. Plus, that way you are fresh for beer drinking and/or doing the touristy thing ;)

it changes every few yrs, so it differs in shade, it can go anything from lighter than yours to a lot lighter than yours, but I hate that so I keep it the same color all year;)
Anyway, back to topic....I still say a good scarf keeps your hair in check, and mine comes out of the helmet looking like its come straight from a timotei advert, unless I've been in the garage with YC....then it looks as mucky as he does......hehehehehe only kiddin MissYC:smt042

I agree. I've seen bald women who look absolutely fabulous and some that don't. Depends on the shape of the face methinks.
Anyway, my solution to helmet hair is braiding. In fact that's my solution to my big afro. If I were to release my afro, it'd take me a good hour at least every day to get it looking just right and I'm sure I'd never get it into a helmet.:p

mine is the same its fine but theres a lot of it and i colour mine to - my hair would break if i stuck into a plait or poney tail i wear it down for work too for that reason.
i agree with covering hair on the bike too i use to wear a neck warmer thing over my hair which helped.

Believe it or not my hair looked even worse when it was short. I`ve tried all different lengths of hair, hairstyles etc and short hair was by far the worst. I even tried it really cropped short (think of Annie Lennox) but it looked so bad when I took my helmet off that i`d have to head for the nearest tap, submerge my head and spike it all up again :(
I'm sure you were too hard on yourself, bet it looked really nice. All you need is a guy who really really likes it and then you'll start to see it ;):D

"Sliks Helmet Liners" are supposed to cure helmet hair.
Don't know if they work or not.
Some of us just seem to suffer helmet hair worse than others.
My hair is fairly short but I can wear a helmet 5 minutes and my hair looks like it was hit by 3 tornadoes...one of which was spinning backwards.
My hair looks soooo bad I usually put on a cap as soon as I get off the bike.
On the otherhand....there is girl with long blonde hair who rides in our group that never has helmet hair.
She pulls off her helmet... filps her hair over her shoulders a couple of times, a quick 2 strokes with a comb on each side of her bangs....and in less than 10 seconds....she has fashion model hair.
I have short hair that looks so bad I have to cover it up with a cap. :(
