View Full Version : AR08 Transport arrangements update.
It was our (the apes) intention to borrow a minibus from a friend to lug all our (TVSF + Soho Massive) kit. This is still a possibility but there are issues.
The minibus in question is normally off the road. It doesn't get used enough to warrant a years insurance. Instead it gets insured on a day by day basis as and when required. This means that if we wanted to use it, it would cost £25 a day to insure.
We will be travelling down on a Friday and coming home on the Monday. That's 4 days which equates to £100. Then there is the cost of the diesel. I am quite sure this is far cheaper than hiring a bus for that period of time.
What I need to find out is if this is viable. A poll then to decide. Who would use the minibus to transport their kit back and fore to the AR? The more that use it, the cheaper it gets.
A poll then. If a minibus was available to use and was cheap enough, would you use it:?:

What? The GM actually have bikes?
Taxi!! (2 wheeled of course!)
I'll be up for it if it gets sub-?10. As I'm currently the only yes it's currently ?100, which is a little steep...

I'd be up for it for sure and now that means the burden for me and The Bear is 50 notes each
Judging from the number of peeps who said yes to your previous offer tho Si i'm sure you'll soon be inundated and we'll end up paying a few quid each and that'll cover the diesel too :D
I'm up for it. So that's 33 notes each pluss diesel. Does the offer extend to people too?
Well that's two that have said yes but not voted. I reckon we are down to £25 each plus fuel. So a good start.
Darren, I see no reason why we can't take passengers as well. Nathan has already baggsied one of the front seats mind.
The truth of the matter is we wont be able to confirm if this is going to work until quite close to the time.

yes please si, would very much like it if this could happen!!
What a bunch of gaylords.
If I can do a weekend's camping on a flippin RGV, you lot have no excuse.

I'll assume you don't want any space then. :smt102
The minibus is a 12 seater by the way. We can remove as many of the seats as required. So if there are no passengers, then we'll take them out to allow more space for kit.

I'm on the line but eiring on the no. Think I can probably manage with just the bike. When you make the final decision I might change my mind and chuck a wedge of notes your way!
I don't mind riding on a bike laden with my stuff, but why do it if you don't have to?
Si, what's the plan for dropping off and picking up stuff? Are you still planning an Ace run, as if so you'll need to factor in an extra day's insurance for the pick up and drop off as well. If it's gonna be from yours I may well give it a miss. Nowt personal of course, but the ride to yours may as well be the ride to the campsite!
I still plan to make a trip to the Ace the weekend before. We have use of the bigger minibus at no cost. So no worries there. Because I offered in the first instance, we wouldn't ask for the fuel to be covered for the pickup of kit, we also understand it would make it rather pointless if you had to bring your kit here.
I'd also just like to point out, those that are thinking of not voting because of cost implications. The vote here is nothing more than to gauge if it's cost worthy to do. If you don't vote yes when you think you would if the cost was a fiver, then your doing the wrong thing. If you vote yes, it doesn't mean you are committed to sharing the costs. I just want to make sure we have enough people to make it worth while. There will be another vote later to confirm definite yes's and then to work out how much for each person.
As an aside. I have been contacted regarding the fuel. Without giving anything away the cost of the fuel has already been taken out of the equation. In short I can get it extremely cheap. (no questions asked ) Thanks very much for the person that contacted me. So we are only talking about the cost of insurance. £100 is the top figure.

Thanks for the offer Si. I think I'm going to use the AR to do a practice run at loading the bike, so I'll opt out but cheers all the same.
I'll be up for this... Why ride with a load of luggage strapped to the bike, when you don't need too??

You wouldn't even notice it on that bandit mate the amount of torque you have now! ;)

I had the intention to ride there, but was still hungover from the night before, so decided it probs wasn't the best time to ride there!

No it'll just add more weight too the back, making it impossible to keep the front end down!

Id be up for throwing my stuff in the van!
UPDATE
We have now had confirmation regarding the minibus. We will have it from Friday 4th to Monday 7th July. So that's 4 days insurance required. The even better news is that it will only cost £15 per day to insure. So a great result I think. A total of £60. Because the insurance is going to be so much cheaper, I may see if we can get the bus for an extra day. Primarily so I can pack everyones gear in the night before. So put that at £75. Still cheaper that was first thought.

Good job!! :)
oh oh oh only just seen this
You know I want to put my stuff in too, don't you
I know, I know, I've ridden with all but the kitchen sink strapped on before but it's so much more fun without it all.
When do you need to load it?
The minibus is a 12 seater. We will be removing the rear seats before we even take it home. I believe it is also possible to remove the next row of seats too. (not entirely sure about that).
This will mean plenty of space for peoples tents and stuff and also a few spare seats for those needing a lift.
The idea is to have a trip to the Ace the weekend before to pick up all the Soho gear. We'll bring it home and store it all in the bike cupboard for the week.
For the TVSF guys, not sure yet. Probably easiest thing to do would be arrange a time at the shire on the Thursday evening before the event and load it straight on to the minibus.

Is the minibus going to be at the Soho/TV meet up point for the ride down?
If so I may beg a seat on the bus for Vixis - unless I can get the pillion seat sorted on the Zed.

For anyone south of the Thames, I'll be going down on Thursday in the cage, and coming back on Monday. If you get your gear to Toad Hall I'll happily carry it down and back for you :-D
Fri Sat & Sun I'll be :riding:

I don't know when or where either of the two sections are meeting for the ride down. If the bus is loaded the night before (Thursday), I'd guess Jo will want to leave from the house and drive straight to the camp site. It's an extra 60 miles of travel just to get to the Shire Horse in Maidenhead and completely in the opposite direction.
If anyone wants to catch a ride in the bus, for which I am sure Jo will be grateful for the company, there is always the possibility of stopping over the night before at the Ape residence. Or maybe a pick up en-route :?:
Mini update.
The minibus is booked and paid for. It's all systems go. We will be going to the Ace cafe the weekend before (probably Sun) to collect Soho massive members gear that wishes to use the service. I am currently thinking we will do a stop at the Shire on the way home to pick up our lot. So will more than likely will be late afternoon / early evening.
We will off load it all at my house and then pack the minibus on the Thursday evening.
I have mentioned this in a different thread but anyone who wishes to bag a seat in the bus is more than welcome. We will easily accommodate anyone at our house the evening before (Thursday) if they wish to stop over. I seriously doubt it will be an early start though, so anyone thinking of turning up on Friday morning for the drive down are more than welcome to choose this option.
All timings are to be confirmed. (pick up at Ace / Shire. And departure on Friday 4th July).
All I can say, is Rock on.
Big Ape will you be returning to the Ace after to drop our stuff off or will we be finding our tents and dirty pants on ebay? If you're gonna go back to the Ace maybe they'd let us have a room for a few hours to keep the stuff in so we don't all have to converge at the same time to get our kit.
:D

Funny, Jo and I discussed this yesterday. We thought about all the different options and then decided we'd do like the RAF do when dropping kit out the back of the Hercules. We'll do a drive by and shove everything out the back doors.
Actually, we were considering holding a BBQ the weekend after, invite everyone and they can take their stuff home afterwards. Reality is, we will probably take a trip down in a vehicle of some description and do a drop off.

Sounds like a plan. I'm actually free that weekend (provisionally speaking).
