View Full Version : Patriotic Songs

Chatting at work today about this and that and it got onto the subject of patriotism. Surprisingly...........or maybe not really.............none of us considered the National Anthem to be our favourite patriotic song. Most picked Land of Hope and Glory with a couple opting for Jerusalem. Although both of those can bring a tear to my eye, Jerusalem just shades it for me as it was also my old school song.

I wondered what orger's would choose as their favourite patriotic song, especially our Welsh, Scottish and Irish members. Would it be the National Anthem, or something else?

I'd also be interested to hear what orger's from other countries would choose? Again, would it be their National Anthem, or something else completely?

Have to admit I really don`t rate our own natonal anthem. For me my favourite anthem would have to be The Land Of My Fathers especially when sung by a Welsh male voice choir.... is so emotional and brings tear to my eyes.

Interesting, I'll have to have a think. My grandparents were irish, my dad was brought up as irish in england, and so was I.. its only recently I've considered myself english. Its just the way I was brought up.. will have to have a think about a patriotic song though! None spring to mind.

without doubt ''men of harlech''. such a 'stiffen up the sinews and summon up the blood' type song. stuck in my mind since i first saw zulu as a young wippersnapper.

Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau (Land of my Fathers), the Welsh national anthem will make any Welshman proud. When it was sung before the Grand Slam match this year, even the French guys with us had a tear in the eye.

Gwesty Cymru always gets my blood up after a few beers to :-(

Don't say you're English

From the Queen's Royal Lancer's Website:

Goodbye to my England, So long my old friend
Your days are numbered, being brought to an end
To be Scottish, Irish or Welsh that's fine
But don't say you're English, that's way out of line.

The French and the Germans may call themselves such
So may Norwegians, the Swedes and the Dutch
You can say you are Russian or maybe a Dane
But don't say you're English ever again.

At Broadcasting House the word is taboo
In Brussels it's scrapped, in Parliament too
Even schools are affected; staff do as they're told
They must not teach children about England of old.

Writers like Shakespeare, Milton and Shaw
The pupils do not learn about them anymore
How about Agincourt, Hastings, Arnhem or Mons
When England lost hosts of her very brave sons.

We are not Europeans, how can we be?
Europe is miles away over the sea
We're the English from England, let's all be proud
Stand up and be counted- Shout it out loud.

Let's tell our Government and Brussels too
We're proud of our heritage and the Red, White and Blue
Fly the flag of Saint George or the Union Jack
Let the world know - we want OUR ENGLAND BACK !!!!

Perhaps this as a new national anthem!

The people's flag is deepest red
It shrouded oft our martyred dead
And ere their limbs grew stiff and cold
Their hearts' blood dyed to every fold

Chorus:
Then raise the scarlet standard high
Beneath its folds we'll live and die
Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer
We'll keep the red flag flying here

It waved above our infant might
When all ahead seemed dark as night
It witnessed many a deed and vow
We must not change its colour now

Chorus

It well recalls the triumphs past
It gives the hope of peace at last
The banner bright, the symbol plain
Of human right and human gain

Chorus

It suits today the meek and base
Whose minds are fixed on pelf and place
To cringe beneath the rich man's frown
And haul that sacred emblem down

Chorus

With heads uncovered swear we all
To bare it onward till we fall
Come dungeons dark or gallows grim
This song shall be our parting hymn

Chorus

Isnt that the Chinese one? Red flag and all that? Or maybe Russian?

Edit: Found it. The Socialist anthem.

You forgot this,the second verse:

Look round, the Frenchman loves its blaze,
The sturdy German chants its praise,
In Moscow's vaults its hymns are sung,
Chicago swells the surging throng.

Proud to be an American by Lee Greenwood. Gives me chill bumps every time I hear it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_82SPkrB-SE

If tomorrow all the things were gone,
I’d worked for all my life.
And I had to start again,
with just my children and my wife.
I’d thank my lucky stars,
to be livin here today.
‘ Cause the flag still stands for freedom,
and they can’t take that away.
And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘ Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.
From the lakes of Minnesota,
to the hills of Tennessee. :D
Across the plains of Texas,
From sea to shining sea.
From Detroit down to Houston,
and New York to L.A.
Well there's pride in every American heart,
and its time we stand and say.
That I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘ Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.
And I’m proud to be and American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘ Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.

Er...sorry... I like the USA and I like country music OK but....
I think I would absolutely puke if I was forced to listen to "Proud to be an American" again... even once.
:smt078

Not from there...but I've always liked Scotland's National Anthem.(Scotland The Brave) (do have ancestors from there)
And not just because I like to the pipes a playin'....(although I do love that)
The best variation is...Dropkick Murphys' version called "Cadence to Arms"

Not everyone has a national anthem you can rock to.....
:smt035..... Yah!!!

But then I'm a musician....and feeling patriotic is much less important to me in a song than the fact of whether or not it's good music.
(although IMHO it's hard to be inspired to patriotism or anything else by bad music)

I've been known to belt out "Land of my Fathers" many a time, every time there's the tingle down my spine and a tear in the eye. Cant say the same about "God Save.." its such a dirge (sp!). The English should drop it as its not exclusive to them it doesnt bind the country together. "Jerusalem" is far too arrogant and "Land of Hope and Glory" is laughable! Britain should find a better one - I like "I vow to thee my country".

Last time I sung Jerusalem was at a funeral, (aside from the fact that it sticks in most Welshmans throats), there was only me and the vicar singing, my heritage forced me to sing on with gusto, even if I'm always just off tune.

Depends on yer point of view......

"Great Britain" and the "UK" were just terms coined up by the English so they did not have to use words like "Colony" and "occupied territories".....and then they wrote a song about it :smt020

"Traditionally, the first performance was thought to have been in 1745, when it was sung in support of King George II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_II_of_Great_Britain), after his defeat at the Battle of Prestonpans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Prestonpans) by the army of the Charles Edward Stuart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Edward_Stuart), son of James Francis Edward Stuart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Francis_Edward_Stuart), the Jacobite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacobitism) claimant to the British throne, whose forces were mostly Scottish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotland) Catholics.
It is sometimes claimed that, ironically, the song was originally sung in support of the Jacobite cause: the word "send" in the line "Send him victorious" could imply that the king was absent. Also there are examples of early eighteenth century Jacobean drinking glasses which are inscribed with a version of the words and were apparently intended for drinking the health of King James II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_II_of_England).
Scholes acknowledges these possibilities but argues that the same words were probably being used by both Jacobite and Hanoverian supporters and directed at their respective kings. "

I never knew that GSTQ was associated with the Jacobite uprising. It's a dirge and I don't like it anyway, but the treatment of the Jacobites at the hands of the English makes this a very bloody 'song'.

Why don't we sing the full one these days

1. God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us;
God save the Queen!

2. O Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall;
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all!

3. Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign;
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen!

4. Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world over.

5. From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, prince, and friend,
God save the Queen!

6. Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the King!

We are far to PC. OK we aren't in the business of scattering enemies or crushing rebellious scots. But WTF, be proud of our heritage.

Tim - no we are not too PC. Why should anyone want to celebrate the murder of thousands of people at Culloden and after in the Highland clearances? Hardly a 'National' Anthem, is it, when it celebrates one of the most shocking and bloody incidents in British history.

I personally loathe GSTQ. I have no regard for royalty whatsoever so as an anthem it means nothing to me, quite apart from the fact it's flipping dreadful. I also get really peeved when it is used as the English anthem for sporting events. We should have our own seperate anthem for England.

Inclined to agree there. I recall hearing somewhere that before "The Star Spangled Banner" was adopted as the US national anthem sometime in the '30's, "My Coutry Tis Of Thee" was another contender, the tune being almost exactly the same as GSTQ.

I could do I suppose, but I might get a few puzzled looks, standing there in my kilt, eating my deep fried mars bar, reminiscing about Archie Gemmil...

Tubthumping by Chumbawumba would make a great Scottish national anthem:

We'll be singing

But I get up again
Youre never going to
