a tl1000s with 52k on the clock?

price is ?2000, but obviously theres no way I'd pay that considering the mileage, but if the price was say ?1300 - ?1500 would you? or ignoring the price would you still buy it?

bearing in mind im not a complete technical numpty so maintenance isn't beyond me what are common falts on the tls/r

I personally wouldnt, I think for 2K you could find one with less miles.

Personally yes, because I don't mind rebuilding stuff. Maybe for 1200 quid.

What I would definately NOT touch is one on standard suspension, ohlins, WP, maxton etc is what you want to see, and chuck the steering damper and fit some sensibly sized tyres.

The big problem.... electrics ... it's a suzuki, it's fuel injected, it's going to be a git.

TL engines do blow up quite easily if you don't change the oil - ask fat_bstard! He has one so maybe could advise you a little more on their weak areas. i think 52k is a hell of a lot of miles for a bike that has no doubt been given a thrashing! I think 2k should get you a nicer example.

I'd be tempted to say otherwise though... like if it was going to blow up it would have done!

NOOOOOOOOOO.Simply put for a little more you can get them with a LOT less milage. Also its a TL you can get better Twins... :)

high millage TLs should be checked over very well, they are known to have gearbox issues above 30k, not always though

I asked one of my colleagues who is an engineer and can pretty much build anything from anything.

"I wouldn't touch it with a torque wrench".

Well, that's good enough for me.

for 2 grand walk away, i got mine for less than that with 20k on it last year at the height of summer and it has an ohlins shock and fork internals as well as having new decent tires on it.

as for them blowing up, just change the oil when your supposed to and dont sit on the red line in first hoping the car in front of you will move out the way cause your exhaust is so loud.

Great bike, but for that sort of money you should be able to get a proper minter.

With the modified suspension then yes, with standard rotary rear damper then no!

The TLs has the best V-twin engine, apart from Ducati superbikes, and is by far one of the best road V-twins every made. It is far stronger than its Honda and other italian rivals and much more suited to UK roads (this is with the rotary damper in the bin!).

Whats wrong with the Rotax?

Nothing, its a good engine its just that Suzuki made a stonking great V-twin engine in relatively a low state of tune that was not only powerful but smoother too!

The Rotax engines are good engines but if the Suzuki engine was made to the same tolerances (i.e. not extra safe) the TL engine would be amazing!

I dont think the engines are that far apart in any ways the tune is similar, (Infact my Valves are smaller 36mm & 31mm vs 40mm & 33mm [SV1000 36mm & 33mm], but I get similar rear wheel Power) they should all be tuned higher imo :p The Aprilia Engine is MUCH smoother than the SV650 engine, its great tbh, run at 2K rpm easy in first 3 gears :)

I agree though from my limited exp on the SV 1000 the Suzuki 996 L twin is nice. Shame they didnt manage to get the rest of the bike propper sorted like the Gixxer's :(

Stronger in power delivery or stronger in build?

Both in my experience of riding and fiddling with them.

If you want one. You need to get (make sure it has) New rear shocker, New front internals, and of course a loud exhaust. :D

Just looking through this weeks MCN and on Page 45 there is a short story on fixing the TL's crappy handling. Basically what I said above. It says the forks have too softer springs too much dampening and not enough rebound. So there you go. :)

The forks aren't that bad. The best writeup I've ever seen is the performance bikes one which goes into great detail on it.
