With the down turn of the economy will we see all those pointless sounding jobs disappear, less spin in politics, smaller 'strategy' teams, etc?

What is going to be the best profession niche to be in, apart from booze and fags?

I reckon IT support will remain strong for a long while.

Our company is massive, but because of the effects of the smoking ban in the UK, we're now loosing approx £400k/month, across only the Pubs estate

So as a result, they've decided to pull the plug on the entire estate. Loads of folks will have to re-apply for their own jobs.

My department, that does exactly the same, but internationally, and not in pubs, is ridiculously understaffed and we're recruiting hand over foot.

I'm in one of those weird jobs in banking that actually does something and adds value, but everyone else on our entire floor basically does imaginary work for no reason, and they all know it, so they're looking just a wee bit nervous... There's a massive project finishing up and once it's done they'll all be spare wheels, looks like. Think there'll be a lot of that going on. What's weird with us is that the bottom levels are pretty secure, there'll be isolated culls as we do "efficiency savings" or lower service standards, but most will be fine. But the middle tiers... Could be messy. Luckily I'm a career failure so I'm still definately bottom teir :smt045

I work in finance for an investment company. Our core business is that we provide services for the largest child trust fund provider in the UK. Luckily, as the govt is giving out ?250 for every child born and we see at least a 5th of them all I should be ok.

As for other jobs.......as per Odin, Ladies of the night, celebs etc will always be around. My bet if things become difficult is as a petrol producing, ciggarette supplying rent boy!!! lol :D

I often work on conferences as a technician rigging projectors, sound, lighting, running the sound desk and powerpoint etc... With the exception of around 2 conferences, every single one I've ever worked on is full of jobsworths who basically spend all their time discussing what they're going to discuss, how to discuss it and what their job titles should be, with a ridiuculous use of buzzwords, abreviations and references to reports commissioned by imaginary people.

"as we all know the darzi review was flawed because it didn't take all the confounding variables into consideration and as for Watkins et al circa 2003 I needn't go on. We need a thorough forum for this kind of dialogue to make sure the diversity is highlighted.... bleh bleh bleh noise."

and they seriously make up their own job titles. Honestly "Oh well I'm a regional development officer" and what exactly do you do? "Well we enter into dialogue with regional consortiums and offer consultation based on their requirements" - so what exactly do you do? "As a regional development officer I act as an advocate to help local government associates and members to help them carry out their duties." So what do you do?

Hopefully, these people will get chopped off. They wind me right up. End of rant.

Anything in the council really.

As for jobs that are going to be good to stick with... gunsmith. I predict a riot or 3 within a couple of years. :-P
