View Full Version : Buying a pre-reg bike?
With buying a bike that is over 1 year old and has 0 miles......
Went to a bike shop yesterday and they had a bargain bike for sale which they had in their spring sale.
The Bike was pre regsitered in October 2006 for a customer and the deal fell through, it then sat in a storage warehouse for a period while the original customer tried to sort things out. This never happened and the bike went back up for sale in winter 2007 and hasnt sold and is hence now a spring bargain as its now last years colours etc.
Its a very respectable main honda dealer that has it for sale so I should imagine plenty of come back should something fo wrong.
I know that if an older bike has been sat for over a year it could lead to problems, the question is, is this the same with new bikes that have been sat for a while as well ?

Did it go through the PDI and everything where they presumably fill it with oil, etc? If it's been kept as it was in the factory I can't see why you'd need to do anything - there are a lot of unregistered bikes that get sold over a year later and I don't think anything special happens to them.
Getting on to 2 years old in this case though...what is it? 600RR?

Yeah its an RR, I didnt ask many questions as I didnt want to lead him on, but in hindsight I'm intrigued about it now, for the price its a very good deal.

Hiya there.
My friend has just bought a pre-registered 07 Kwaka zx6r
And he is very happy with it.
Check the tyres as if it has sat in one spot, the tyres might have distorted.
but other than that I personaly would get the dealer to give the bike a thorough check.
Happy riding cris.

The main problem is there's only a few months of waranty left on it and it's old model and year obviously. I'd hope there was a pretty big whack off and a new third party warranty included maybe.

I'd say go for it, it will get a full service and inspection prior to collection anyway and shouldn't have any problems or issues after being sat for a year. The CBR600RR is due for a refresh for next year, so this bike is identical to this years bike apart from the colours!
A lot of people probably looked over it and thought hmm... I want a ******* colour one though and opted for the newer colour and newer plate.
As for the warranty it may be the 2 years (I think thats Hondas warranty life) when bought as the bike may be registerd to the dealer which means the warranty hasn't yet been activated, either that or ask the dealer for a warranty (especially if they are a large dealership).

+1
My mates just bought a 06 spanking new zx6. It was delivered with 0.9 miles on the clock. Full warranty, they've just finished the 1k running in period so it's up to full rev's... what a beast! :)

+2 . Don't let it put you off . Its still a new bike until its left the showroom don't forget
My last two bikes were pre-reg.
£2000 off list and they register the warranty when you buy the bike (although check it would be the same for you) so I got the full 2 years warranty.
The downside is that I had to buy tax after a month but hey £65 v's £2000 is a no brainer. Also it will need its first MOT earlier but again the cost of that versus £2000 off list is nothing.
Never had any problems. V5 shows previous keep as the dealer so second hand buyers don't care either and you can sell it on for the same price as someone that paid the £2000 more than you for their unregistered machine.

Don't do it, it sounds like you're buying a Honda!
Only joking ;)
is the waranty from day of registration or sale??? if its from sale then waranty would be from when sale is put though...

Been again to look with the girlfriend today, the warranty starts from when the bike was registered so It doesnt have the full 2 years, only about 8 months left. Although doesnt bother me all that much to be honest.

Hadnt thought of the MOT thing, good point however minor, tax is only a tiny cost as well really.

Hadnt thought of that either
Possibly going to go for it as the saving off list price is just rediculous.
I'm yet to throw a bike down the road, so I dont want to spend ?7k plus until i have lol, so this iswould be ideal for now
No doubt another obstacle will stand in my way before next weekend though:rolleyes: always happens to me
