View Full Version : Lightning... EXTREME CLOSEUP... LOL
Ok, so we were on a storm... which were few and far between over the past couple of weeks. I saw this thing swoop in from above but as I was near the van I didn't see where it hit. Luckily someone caught it...
AWESOME!!!

I'll be sorting through all my pics and footage at some point...
I really don't want to come home on sunday... *sigh*

Ping, that seems so unrealistic, I can't begin to describe!! ...
I have been within a few meters of a lightning strike and it is a total whiteout, leading me to believe that footage it a total fake!! ;)
I can see there are prbably different levels/ferociousness of strike, but having experienced one close-ish, I really think that is totally fake ;) the energy involved to make a strike go from all the way from the ground to the clouds is immense!!
Seriously what camera wouldn't just blot out with a true strike that close??! ;)
Oh and have you been in the states (or is that 'strailia??) then???
I missed ya!! :D
Ah, the expert has spoken.
I was there. I saw the strike, I heard the gunshot and crackle instantaneously with the strike. I saw everyone on the hill near it freak and charge back to the vans.
The footage was checked on the journey to dinner and shown at the table after the chase. No time to fake it. We were in Texas at the time, so yes, I am in the USA.
I dunno if you missed the bulletin but I'm here storm chasing.
Greek - judging by the footage it touched down on or near the road. It wasn't far and the noise was immense. Was fan-fooking-tastic. That was an amazing day. :)

Love that Ping! Really gives an idea of the energy, hearing the crack like that! I took a load of pics a few years ago from my bedroom window of a storm;

As I said, the ferociousness of a strike might vary, but if that was a few feet away, that seemed really weak (as I said, I HAVE been near a lightning strike before, but that was in the UK, it was a proper 'thumper' that destroyed a tree and frightened the carp out of me as a kid  ) I have never been in a tropical storm where I think the humidity is higher so you will not need the same sort of energy to cast a bolt I suppose) So on that point I am suspicious, but not totally dismissing it. ;)
So next point, if that was supposed to have landed/cast in the road right in front of you, the 'clap' would have been essentially instantaneous. Sound travels at ~350 m/s; if that was 3.5m away, that 'clap' would have been ~1/100th second later. I haven't actually tried to stop-watch it as it doesn't really matter, but you gotta agree, there seems to be >0.01s elapse between the strike and the clap in the footage ;)
I was also trying to catch it mid-strike to see what direction the lightning flowed, but the camera was not fast enough.
Ping, if you saw it for real for yourself, then I am sure it happened, but for conspiracy theorists like me, a few things just don't seem to add up ;)
Hope you are having a great time out there anyway, sounds like a really cool thing to be doing 8)
Oh and just to be pedantic this statement is technically inaccurate ...
I saw this thing swoop in from above but
I'd have thought the first thing any 'storm chaser' knew is that lightning travels from the ground up or the clouds down (there is actually a little tooing and frowing before it builds the charge IIRC), it happens so fast, there is no way you could have know which way it traveled when it finally flashed ;)

Nice one Ping - that rocks!
Good to see you're having fun out there :D
Was fan-fooking-tastic.
I like that quote, I like that a lot.
A whole lot of nothing
Translated that should have read "OK, It seems I am wrong."

No, it seems the video is wrong!! Or do you not understand the basics of lightning and sound travel that makes it seem fake or at least highly questionable?
I don't think Ping is the sort of person to BS this, so I do however believe ping if she says it was real!
And I am glad/happy for her she is having a great time out there! Its the sort of thing I'd like to do as I find all that sort of stuff fascinating! :)

If that's the case, why do you feel the need to go and spoil it by posting annoying things on her thread? Or can't you help yourself? ;)

Was on a ship that got hit by lightning in a tropical storm. You actually felt the hit as a slight jolt through your whole body, and the noise would put a gp bike to shame.

I'm sorry, questioning everything and not being afraid to point it out if I think there is something that conflicts with my understanding - and/or trying to get people to question their understanding of things - is a flaw/s of mine!! I am so misunderstood!! :(
Do you not agree the things I pointed out (like sound delay and the camera not whiting out) just don't add up and if you just saw it randomly on youtube it seems like a fake?!!? ;) Just coz it is from the lovely Ping doesn't mean it isn't open to scrutiny does it!?!? ..
If so - My bad! :D

Brilliant!!!
Back now. Yay... *sigh*
Blue: Your 'misunderstood' manner of 'questioning the facts' essentially indicated that your opinion was 'Ping, you're a liar.'
I don't feck about. I'm generally well known for that. And I believe you've experienced it too.
You're spot on with your description of how lightning works.
I know a fair amount about the weather due to the people I hang around with. They've been at the subject for years. What annoyed me further is the fact that you assumed I didn't even know the basics from my post. WRONG. All I was doing was showing people what happened. That clip was limited, but at least someone caught it. I'd left my camcorder in the van in favour of just taking stills of the approaching storm, something I'll always kick myself for.
One of the guys in that Youtube clip is the host of a tv program called 'Angry Planet'. He's seen A LOT, as has the guy who drove the van I was in for two weeks. Mike has seen innumerable storms as well as filming at least 20 hurricanes. He's one of the leading experts on hurricane footage and is set up with ITV for filming the next year of hurricanes in the States.
I'm glad you're happy I enjoyed myself, but PLEASE do not underestimate me OR the people I was out there with.
You discredit all the work that went into the few storms we got into.
Being in the right spot for tornadoes is akin to finding a needle in a haystack. America's a big-ass country.
What I experienced was humbling.
(But fooking AWESOME!!!)

Ping, after you had been so condescending toward me, "Ah, the expert has spoken." etc etc I think you deserved the pedant!! ;) My Bad! :D
Simple fact is, that if I just saw it on youtube (i.e. with no introduction by you), I'd have to conclude it was a fake!! ;) (and that is what I implied from the very first post and throughout!! :smt019 :D) And was hoping you could explain away my observations, at the bare minimum pointing out it'll be open to scrutiny by 3rd parties!! ;)
I look forward to the photos etc of your trip when you get round to uploading them 8)
