View Full Version : How do i tell the lodger nicely?????
that he is hogging my pc. I cant ever get on it as he is addicted to facebook. I cant remeber telling him that it was ok to use. He just took advantage.
I dont mind but feel bad if i have to ask to use my own PC.
I want to hint for him to get a laptop with wireless and he can use that.
But i dont want to upset him as im not the upsetting type of person.
So suggestions o mighty ones of org land.

Who's house it it :?:
Taking liberties if you ask me. Just tell him you don't mind him using it once in a while, but please ask first and try to limit your time on it.

put a password on it so he has to come find you and ask permission. If he starts being a bit of a tit about it then tell him politely that you may have to up the rent for the privilege. If he can take advantage of one thing what's to stop him suddenly 'popping in your room' to find a spot of loo roll or summat and maybe having a snoop? Boundaries!
Saying that I have no idea what he is like and he might be the nicest of guys who pays dead on time and behaves but still, you are doing him a favour letting him into your house ;)

haha great minds think alike :D
Passwords are good.....IM in the middle of applying it!
tell him to stop using it without your permission. if he is taking advantage with that and you say nothing he will start taking advantage with all sorts of stuff. you will end up havingto put a lock on the fridge and maybe even your bedroom door.

Er,.......:cyclopsani:

Does he keep any of his things in places other than his room? If he does AND helps himself to YOUR computer, then he is probably in the mindset that he shares the house with you. The best thing to do I reckon is password your computer like the others have said so you have to turn it on for him but also maybe just be direct so he remembers he is just a lodger.
I completely messed up and now I have to live with it for the rest of my life. I let Stretchie move in as a lodger, now I have his stuff all over the place and he even shares my bed and takes me on holiday with him....CRAZY!!! Oh well, at least he's given me his Thundercat and makes me happy. Something tells me this is not an option for you...lol
Hmmm - a problem with computers... this calls for my brand of advice...
... hit him with a hammer. ;)

modify the hosts file so that www.facebook.co.uk or whatever points to 127.0.0.1 :)

log into the router and block facebook,
or even set the comptr up to work of wirless and dont allow the computer to remember the password, so he has to ask for that password just for the net,
or unplug it and say its been cut off due to too much porn download

If using the computer is the only problem, and he's OK as a lodger other than that, then I wouldn't password the computer. All that will happen is that he'll want it when you're out, call you for the password and you're back to square one, but with a bit of bad feeling as you don't trust him.
I would just make a point of politely but firmly saying you need to use the the computer and could he finish off what he's doing? D that two or three times and, if he's not a complete a**e, he know to get off it when you're hanging around. If he is a complete a**e then it's time to look for a new lodger.

soulkiss....how do i do this mate?
this would be perfect
Go here:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Right click the file "hosts" and select open. Open it using notepad.
The last line in the file is:
127.0.0.1 localhost
Under it, type:
127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com (http://www.facebook.com) (it wont underline in the notepad)
Click save and close to the notepad window.
Try got to facebook. It will just say page cannot be displayed.
By the way, if he's an ok geezer, I'd just chat to him.
By the way (part 2) I did this to a guy at work who f00ked me off big time - fellow biker too. He sent a snidey e-mail to management saying he should get the corporate footie tickets before me, as he was more senior. So I cut off his favourite forums for several months!! :)
thanks guys camel, soulkis....has worked a treat!he is a call guy but my computer isnt the best and he is sticking more things on it also. i just want to be able to get back on it without having to ask!
once again thanks

'Nother plan :)
Go into the Control Panel and add a password to your Account - will now mean you need that to log in, so slightly inconvenient.
Then set him up an account with NO privileges and set a password on that.
That way he will not be able to make any changes to the machine.
Tell him you needed a mate to look at a problem with Remote Desktop (which requires the user accounts to have passwords and that you are sorry)
Or for real nastiness (well not really) get all your stuff off it, then reformat it and re-install windows - will get all his junk off it - and as he just browses the web, you never thought that he might have stuff he could lose.................

It points to the machine it is on - its whats known as a loopback address.
127.0.0.1 = localhost
Its a kind of secondary IP address for your machine - if I put in 127.0.0.1 its my machine as its non-routable on the internet and your machine/router knows this and stops it from working
If you wanted you could change it to 69.65.101.155 - that would be the IP address for forums.sv650.org :)

Just a thought but can you not put the computer in your bedroom?
Everytime he wants to use it say yeah but lie naked on your bed reading a porn mag, big box/small box (delete accordingly) of tissues on bedside cabinet :D

That could backfire...
Just chat to him dude. Wait till he's on the pc, then walk in the room and say in a light hearted way, "I think we're gonna need a second pc for you buddy", as you are going about your business. See what he says.
If he ignore's (or doesn't get) the hint, just say, "Buddy, I'm not being funny, but more and more just recently, you seem to be on the PC when I'm planning on using it".
As long as you bring it up in a friendly way, you'll be good!

I agree but instead of saying "the" pc I would say "MY PC". Remind him that he`s renting a room, board and lodgings does not include your personal possessions!
