View Full Version : Respray (colour change), what's involved legally?
As the title really. EDIT: 'Smelling' error in the title, I'd be most grateful if a mod could correct it for me. :D
My bike is probably going to be a keeper, it's done way too many miles to make it a viable part-exchange, so I'll probably keep it as a run around & run it into the ground.
That said, it's my wheels, and it's looking more than a little shabby after a cowling brace interface. So I'm considering taking the plastics off, sanding down the affected areas, priming, then re-spraying it myself. I'm considering a different colour (mainly so I don't have to bother with colour matching etc), although I don't know what colour yet.
Surely it can't be as simple as shouting at the DVLA people to tell them you've changed colours. Anyone done it in the past on any vehicle? What paperwork is involved?

Simple as filling out your V5 (Registration Document) and sending it to Swansea.
Don't forget to advise your insurer as well

Ah, so quite tricky then, as I'd have to locate said V5 first.

+ 1, unless you opt for a different shade of what you already have.

interesting, i've never had to tell my insurer, car or bike, what colour the vehicle is, only imply it's the same as on the V5 by not telling them it's different
remember dvla only do primary colours ie balck white, silver blue green etc etc
so if the bikes a dark blue and you go for a lighter blue you wont need to tell dvla or the insuance as its not chnaged as blue is blue on the log book
all depends if you wanna do a fullcolour change.
also i know with cars some insurance companys class this as a modification, but i belive this to be for grapics painted on the cars

I called my insurance company to tell them my bike was black, not green, and they said they didnt even ask for the bikes colour. The guy did say though that should anything happen, they will only paint the bike in standard colours (green). otherwise i would have to list it as a modification. i said i wasnt fussed, so he said no worries, i dont need to list it as a modification.
That was with equity red star, im sure some companies have different policies.

You should do, one thing about updating the records is that if the old bill are behind you and ANPR is used they may wonder why the bike is say Blue but registered as Green and pull you over for no reason and then start to nick pick. As for the legality I am not 100% sure, but I beleive it is something you should do especially with the insurance company as some can get fussy about little things!

You should do...
i never said you shouldn't tell the DVLA, but if you tell them and the cops run your plate the DVLA records will show the new colour, no problem, no need to tell your insurer unless you've already told them the colour before you changed it shirley?

Very true, unless they already know the colour there is no point in telling them it has changed.

When I did mine I got the DVLA and insurers to register it as "multicoloured", which saves a lot of effort :D I could be wrong but I think my premium dropped slightly when I went to multi from black, because black is the nicest standard colour and therefore very nickable.
