I have been a twit and broke off one of the exhaust studs.
I will drill it out but can anyone tell me how far into the head they are threaded to save me drilling too far.
Thanks

I take as it is a stud that broke you have a curvy. I have a pointy and broke a front header bolt in the head last year. I drilled through the broken part with an HSS drill. I reckon there was about 18mm in the head with about a 5mm air gap behind that before you star drilling into the head.

I tried to use an easy out to get the remainder out but 2 easy out's broke trying. I broke a Cobalt drill bit trying to drill through the easy out. I used to much pressure.

I had to resort to taking the head off and get it to an engineering firm. They used a clever way to get the waste out. They drilled a 1mm diameter hole half through the broken bolt and half through the head. They then centre drilled the waste/bolt with a 5mm drill bit (very hard metal to get through the Cobalt) so not to damage the thread. You have to be bang on centre for this though. Once you have drilled right through the bolt you should be able to use a strong pair of long nose pliers to peel away the waste.

Cobalt drills will be much easier to use but use a slower speed, keep them cool and don't use too much pressure, they snap easily!
