...got one in the office this week. He has been doing my head in!

He sits there making weird noises, like, grunting all the time. I don't think he has showered all week, he is wearing the same shirt as yesterday and today I have been stuck with him as the other two guys who I work with are in a meeting all day.

Thank goodness I have tomorrow booked off.

Don't think he will see it through to the end of the day though :smt070

You get some good ones (25%) and you get some bad ones (75%):(

Youth of today :( its sad that I'm getting old enough to say that.

He has also got 3 rounds of drinks in the 3.5 days of being here. I drink about 4cups of coffee in a morning! When he is asked he just sits on his **** looking confused.

give him soma to do!...

I would, but he has come on work experience in an IT office and doesn't seem to have installed an application on a computer before? It's not hard finding crappy jobs for him to do tbh. I did make him go shred some paper yesterday but I think it has now all been shredded! :o

Ask "What did you do with those papers I gave you earlier?", then be outraged when he tells you he destroyed them. Then get him some stickytape and ask him to put it together again for Monday as they were "very important".

On Monday ask for them shredded again, but remove the fuse from the shredder and give him some blunt scissors.

PS - remember to set a good example of productivity in the workplace by being on this forum once every 15 minutes.

If making tea confuses him, it begs the question what he's doing in IT? Maybe he could be put to use cleaning the windows (with his tongue?).

Or better yet, send him to the shops for some teabags/coffee, then lock him out.

Send him to get a bag of cold air from staples for the air conditioning.

oh IT work experience kids are my favourite :D

Ok, one job I can guarantee you've been putting off for years - that snakes nest you call a comms room, tell him you'd like every floor port mapped to a switch port. Then when he's done that tell him you'd like every floor port in the comms room marked on a physical map showing the location of the port on the office floor.

Then, if you still have time left, have him monitor flashing lights on the switches over the course of several days and report back at the end of the week with patched but non active ports :D I saved myself a switch purchase last year thanks to freed ports :D

what is it about IT guys smelling of BO. Not saying you all do but an awful lot I have come across really whiff. Its not as if they have a job that involves a lot of sweating of anything.

They are more often than not locked away in the oldest, most run down part of building where there is no air conditioning.....add in the fact that they are then sorrounded by lots of machines and servers giving off stupid amounts of heat......there you have it sweaty smelly IT people. :D

Add in the fact that they probably spent the night gaming until 3am on the xbox, slept in and didnt have time for a shower......well you get the idea.

Disclaimer:- Most stereotypical view of IT staff ever and 'probably' doesnt reflect how all of them are. lol

Dont get me started on that

im trying to get a wake up on LAN that will take the data from each computer say Monday morning and then update our database so we know which pcs are plugged in!

I think its a genius idea getting it pass to boss atm!

Firstly have you actually sat the poor lad down and explained what his duties will be and what you expect of him? helps to have some sort of package printed out that you can hand to him on his first day and get him to sign to say he`s read and understands its content.

Secondly they may come across as lazy etc. but think how intimidating it is for a young guy to walk into an environment full of strangers when each one of those "strangers" knows his/her role in that office and where they fit in.

Thirdly re. his shirt. You have to bear in mind that this young lad is probably still at school/college? fashion today is tee shirts not shirts. He may be from a family background where money is tight and money to buy appropriate clothing for a work environment ie. shirts might be hard to come by and it has only been possible to buy 2 or 3 shirts. He may not have a clean shirt for every day of the week and has to stretch 1 shirt to 2 days.

Dhaaam! You have been to my office?!

No outside light, no heating, no A/C and as I am the only IT person here - no colleagues! Its a sad and lonely existence!!

When on my work experience I told them I'm not here to make tea. So they made me clean the swimming pool. I never complained about making tea again!

I used to have to make about 6 brews at a time when I did mine at a vet's. Doesn't exactly sound difficult but it was a bit hard remembering who had soya milk, full fat or skimmed or none, all the sugars/or none! I once mixed one up and gave someone a sugary one when they didn't want sugar (not on purpose), haha I laughed.

I was always asking for jobs, they'd just have me watching all the time and I wanted to get stuck in, but obviously too many health and safety measures! Loved every minute though

Aww that's not fair, they wouldn't allow me to go near any animals really, apart from watching ops. Blumin' health and safety, spoilt all the fun! Most on hands thing I got to do was load up the autoclave and sort instruments out ooo goody. Oh and clean down the tables in the consultation rooms haha. Learnt a lot though.

It could be worse I know - but then it could be a lot nicer!
