Guys and Gals, I have a 2000 SV650S which is having running issues and would appreciate any help.

The rev counter drops to zero and the bike feels like it is on one pot, 65 mph max, if I stop the engine dies unless I rev the guts out of it. If I peg back the throttle it can come back on at any time and the bike goes like hell. But it doesn't seem to last long before it drops to zero again.

The bike had a service, a new regulator and rectifier and a new battery.

Loose connection to front coil or to the battery.

thanx very much I will have a good look this weekend. It great when someone can point you in the right direction. Most garages have said that they need to put it on a dyno (£45) and then see what the problem is.

Been out in the rain?Check for water/rust around front plug.

That wouldn't affect the tacho.

Any garage who can't check for loose wires without charging you 45 quid are a bunch of robbing ar$eholes. And if they need a dyno to do it they're incompetent ar$eholes too.

is the tacho cable connected to the front coil? I am wondering why the tacho drops to zero.

Yes that's why I suggested it ;-)

It's easy to knock the connector if you have the tank up. I've done it myself.
