Had my first **** out moment today...Very scary http://www.ukbeg.com/modules/Forums/images/smiles/icon_eek.gif

Riding around some narrow gravely country lanes near Eynford Kent when I gave a few to many beans coming out of a corner...

The rear wheel kicked out and I thought Shiiiiiitttttttt..

All worked out ok but more by luck than judgement I feel.

Kept the power on stood up more on my left peg and gave a little more counter steer...Dont know if that was the right thing to do but seemed to work.

I can only say I did this on Hindsight as if I had to think about it I probably would be off but instinct/survival sort of took over.

Right thing to do or not?

Anyway, what a bike my Buell XB12Ss Lightning Long is....Everytime I ride her I love her even more. V-Twins Rule!

Bring on more sunshine

Yeah it's scary. I think; from experience, but not possibly the correct thing to do is to just ride through it. On the road you won't be pushing it that much so just don't stand to bugger upwards.

Good work

If you ever need someone to give the bike a ride to check it's ok just look here ;)

clearly was the right thing to do if you stayed the right way up ;) ..

hehehe wondered if you were to 'get' the inhouse Buell joke.......lol

If you stayed on your bike in this incident I'd say to put it down to experience, no real formula for staying on top when the rear goes a bit woopsi, its just being lucky.

Just been out with a mate of ours today on a X1 lightening, now that were a bit of an animal:-) certainly know when that thing comes behind you....raaaaaaaar!!

You had the presence of mind to think/do all that?? ... how long was this slide

Anyway if the back slides, I think the official line is roll off the throttle slightly - don't slam it shut, but don't keep it in the same position - this reduces the power output that started the slide and allows the tyre to regain traction in a controlled manner ... you can then pull over, and empty your underpants, but have a bike that is still in one bit!

Dunno if it was a left or right turn, so hard to say if you stood on the correct peg ;) ... but if the bike is sliding away from you, I can't see you can transfer much weight anyway? .. the most important bit is to bring the rear grip back in a controlled manner.

Keeping the power ON can result in a 'lowside', slamming the throttle shut can result in a 'highside' (ouch).

No presence of mind as per the post

Whats the difference between a fueller and a tuber? Buell virgin here!

I guess I mean to actually think about what you did in the de-brief ... if it was pure instinct, it would have happened so quickly, you would have had no idea what you did ;)

To know you counter steered and put weight on peg and kept it pinned ... your concious mind must have been working to log all that!! ;)

Tuber style Buells are have a tubed frame and a normal fuel tank where as the Fueller style Buells have the Fuel in the frame.

Yeah i suppose..Dont know really....Just thinking about it afterwards and that's what seemed to happen.

Its all good, but you asked for the official line and that is to knock the throttle off a bit (but not to close it fully) and ride it out 8)

But as you say, having the presence of mind to do that is a little more tricky than talking about it. I seemed to do the rightish thing though which i am pleased about....Need new pants though :)

Seeing as you stayed on the bike I'd say you did the right thing instictively.

But what's the difference between a highside and a lowside? I was under the impression that a lowside was slower whilst the highside was a lot faster and usually resulted in the rider being thrown from the bike, anything like that?

I think instinct in this situation is to slam the throttle shut ... now most of us might do that instinctively, but then when the brain kicks in that fraction of a second later, we realise we should have kept a bit on ... we can then apply a bit of throttle ... having this knowledge might not stop the instinct/initial input, but if the brain kicks in quick enough after, it could still be in time to save the day!! ;) For this reason, i think there is still value in knowing what you 'should' do ...

Its the same for skidding in a car ... (before the advent of ABS) ... if you start to skid, yo tend to naturally just push the peddle harder as you are not slowing enough and it just keeps skidding .. we all know you need to do kaden-braking .. so I have done this before ... started to skid ... the realised what I am doing and pump the brakes ... its saved the day on a few occasions now I am sure 8)

Lowside is when the rear just keeps sliding out and the bike falls that way - you are already near the ground, hence lowside. A highside starts as a lowslide, but the rear tyre gains grip too quickly, compresses the shock rapidly ... the shock then unloads and shoots you out of the saddle ...

Highsides tend to end in injury, as long as you don't hit anything before coming to a hault, lowsides you can normally get away without any proper injury 8)

see what I mean about hitting things

Here is a 'proper' (high speed) highside ... you can see when he comes to earth that is gonna hurt!!

Highsides would be great fun if it didn't cost hundreds each time.
