View Full Version : Tool Chest thread
I would really like a tool chest. There is a mirror finished stainless steel one in my local Costco....but it £500!!!
Anyway, I was looking in Halfords at theirs, and they seem "cheap" compared to the holy grail one in Costco.
But I have found some cheap alternatives:
RAC ones at Argos:

Some other brands at Machine Mart:

Has anyone any experience of these, or can anyone recommend a brand that is both excellent and cheap?

The Clarke ones from Machine mart are good value for money if you go for the HD plus range. Avoid the ctc600 ctc900 there is insufficient hinge on the lid.
if the costco one scares you at £500, start looking at Snap On and professional Mac ones etc.
I said a BRAND that excellent, not a BAND that is most excellent! :D

Oh yeah, I can imagine. I will look at the clarke ones though. Hopefully the shop will have some in to look at.
The problem with Argos is that you probably have to buy it, before you can look at it.

have you looked at the ones in halfords? no idea if they're any good but they're red and look alright
halfords professional do some good ones. You're still looking at about £400 ish (roll cab and top box), but they're great for that kind of money.
snap on tool chests are about £1500 for a very basic model. was looking for one myself for work, but might possibly go for the halfords one. (black one looks quite nice)

You should look at the Costco models, very very nice! Much better than the Halfords ones, in my opinion.

The Clarke ones are pretty good, but as ever with Machine Mart the cheap ones are mince, so it can be tricky to tell where the good ones start. I've got one of their top chests, from a now discontinued range but there's an equivalent,
I like this one:
http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cfs312-12-drawer-extra-deep-tool-chest/path/tool-chests-cabinets
Deep drawers = good, you can't fit a lot in the small drawers of most chests and if you overload them they can jam
The halfords ones as pretty good, the more expensive ones with the bearings etc. Snap on and mac tools and the like are nice but far too expensive what they are.
