Im going to have to cater for a veggi for a couple of days, what is the difference in cooking fake chicken over real chicken and other replacement meats?

I can cook fine, but Im not going to cook food that doesnt have large amounts of meat in it! lol If she dosent like that, I have a lettus and some spring ongions she can eat. :-s

Thanks

When you say fake chicken what exactly do you mean? I know tofu is a popular substitute, I live with a couple of veggies and a vegan, they eat a lot of the stuff lol. Cooks just like meat from what I've seen but is nothing like it really. Theres this thing called Sosmix too which makes convincing sausage substitutes! Or lots of pasta/noodles/curry?

Being a guy you'll probably want a fairly meaty dinner, you might have to cook your friend's meals separate to yours :smt102

remember it doesn't need 'cooking'. Subsitutes just need a bit of crispening around the outside and warmed up in the middle. Sosmix is tasty :) Tofu can be great if you marinate it the day before, but it seems increasingly difficult to get the firm stuff.
Maybe get a falafel mix from the foreign foods section of the supermarket. It'll look like a mini box of cereal. Its easy, cheap and tasty :)

I think Quorn is great too.

Well, I was planning just to cook my normal meals, but cook the meat replacement in a separate pan.

I think I will go shopping with her, and she can get the bits she likes to eat as I wouldnt know where to start.

OR...

I could just cook her chicken and tell her its tofu or somthing like that.... lol

oh, I just assumed (yes I know what they say about that!) that you could walk into a shop, and the product was called fake chicken, or chicken replacment. lol. shows how much I know!!

In that case, Quorn is a good bet, like Sarah mentioned. I had a Quorn lasagne once (I'm not a veggie though) - good stuff, almost hard to tell the difference!

Baked beans on toast too, can't go wrong with that one! (unless of course she hates baked beans...you probably want to be a leeeetle bit more sophisticated than that...:D)

Whatever the recipe, I GUARANTEE that it will start 'chop and fry an onion'

I got so bored with that. And one day I smelled a bacon sandwich:rolleyes:

A lass I know has been a veggie for 14 and then in the last few weeks has gone back to eating meat as she decided she wasn't getting enough of what she needed dietwise. NOT that I'm saying you can't live without meat but it physically it just wasn't doing my mate any good. She says it's all psychological, I smiles and nods as I can't imagine it would be easy to just change like that. My vegan friend has been so all is life (family all veggies and vegans) and if he accidentally eats or even almost eats meat he'll physically throw up as his body can't cope. But I would think that's got a lot to do with psychology too.

Sorry for that bit of derail lol!

The Quorn range do some good stuff if you want grill type lumps.

You could try some imagiative omelettes with all sorts of stuff thrown in, onions, cougettes, peas, sweetcorn or go really wild with some pre cooked sliced potatoes (like a Spanish omelette). Try grilling some haloumi to put on top

If you're going for a roast type of meal there are several pre made dry nut roast mixes that you just add water to and serve with the same rest of the meal but in place of the meat

But if you really ant to impress go for an aduki bean lasagne or butter bean and cider bake or anything else with beans or pulses.

or anything pasta with tomatoes and any other veg and/or cream you've got.

Good luck!

Quorn not too bad but the texture can be a bit odd sometimes. Bolognaise made with soya mince? some are difficult to tell the difference and if you add loads of garlic and some red wine i`m sure it`ll taste great. Shepherds Pie made with soya mince, Or what about a veggie curry? can be just as tasty without the meat, i used to put potatoe, courgettes, tomatoes, cauliflower in or there`s lots of pasta dishes you could do, make one with roasted veg and some feta cheese, loads of garlic bread and it`d be a great meal. Veggie food isn`t such a difficult option these days, have a look at http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/selections-gallery/cold-weather-vegetarian-food,1511,RS.html some great meals there.

thanks, those are some good ideas. I make a good spag bog so thats a good plan. And curry without the meat, interesting, but Im in a tricky possition, I dont want to stop eating meat just to give into her, which could potentially be a slippery slope for later in life. stick to my guns! :smt068

i never understood quorn tbh, alone it looks and tastes like recycled paper, and when you cook it it just absorbs what you cook it with, so when you do bolognese sauce you get recycled paper that tastes like tomatoes:confused:

to be honest, it's easy cooking for a veggie. The majority won't 'substitute' for meat, they'll just have normal meals bar the meat. Like a veggie stirfry. It's easy!

Those veggie eaters still need protein to stay healthy....
Use a juicer and process 2 lbs of sirloin, you'll get about 8 oz of meat-juice!
Hmmmm meat-juice:smt040

some good suggestions there I think. I've been veggie fo 18 years now and find quorn mince works well in bolagnaise, chilli and my personal favourite shepherds pie (made with root mash containing my body weight in cheese).
If you cook the sausages, burgers etc I find drowning them in olive oil does a lot for the flavour.
Make sure you use seperate utensils, pan everything for the veggie food coz we can be a funny bunch if you stir our food with a spoon covered in cow juice, which may upset your romantic aspirations...:smt070:pig::smt119

Want to have a steak but don't like the texture of meat?
Trying to sneak the great taste of steak without fellow Vegans catching on?
Road trip doesn't allow for a steak dinner but you still have a crave'n
Here is the product for you:

Um, can I point out that as you're going to great lengths to cater for her dietary requirements that when you go to her house for a meal, make sure that you let her know your dietary requirementments. You are not a vegetarian,. you eat meat, hmmm, meat. And expect the same courtesy to be shown to you by her providing a meat course or two!

It's only fair.

I DID have a friend that for a laugh would go into Veggie restaurants and ask what the "carnivore special" of the day was........

I'm a veggie and have been for nearly two years! (Gotta kick this smoking habbit though ;)).

Try quorn chicken pieces with a curry sauce, throw in some onions and other veg. My ex ate meat but she proffered currys with quorn chicken as opposed to real chicken.

Some other good options have been mentioned (though I only read through two pages :p)
