Motorcyclist safety campaign offers chance to win a track day

Submitted: 27/05/2008 16:46:15 http://www.surrey.police.uk/Images/Newsandappeals/motorbike%20campaign%20200x120%20web%20version.jpg KEEN motorcyclists in Surrey have the chance to win a free day at a motor-racing track or an advanced riding lesson, in a campaign to improve safety for motorcyclists on Surrey’s roads.

Surrey Police and Surrey County Council have teamed up with MotorSport Vision and Genesis Yamaha as part of ‘Ride safer, live longer’ – a campaign to try to reduce the number of motorcyclists killed or injured on Surrey's roads.

Despite accounting for just one per cent of road users, around a quarter of all fatal accidents in Surrey involve motorcyclists. In 2007, 18 riders were killed and 133 were seriously injured in collisions, making it a priority for all Surrey's organisations working together to make Surrey’s roads safer.

Alex Baker, track day organiser at MotorSport Vision, commented: “We all know that riding fast gets the adrenalin pumping but doing so on the road is not only illegal but also dangerous. Track days are about taking your own bike to a race circuit where you can explore your bike’s performance in a safe and controlled environment, without traffic to slow you down.”

Bill Hailstone of Genesis Yamaha, added: “Many accidents involving motorcyclists are caused by car drivers failing to see them. Motorcyclists need to learn to anticipate what car drivers will do and ride in a defensive way. They can’t assume other road users see them so must be riding to avoid difficult situations rather than having to take evasive action.”

Campaign activity to raise awareness of motorcyclist safety will continue over the summer months and at the same time Surrey Police will be carrying out extra patrols to enforce the rules of the road for all vehicles.

The competition will run until 30 June 2008. Enter online at www.surreycc.gov.uk/roadsafety or request an entry form from Surrey County Council on 08456 009009.

Pah. The question was clear and concise and the answer was available by way of the back button. 10/10 for Surrey council.

I wonder where the nearest Bikesafe thingy is...

Worth a shot, ive entered.

They should of made you trawl through pages and pages of statistics and warnings instead of giving the answer so readily.
