For the record they were trying to make any movie with a smoking scene in it an 18....
So I'd be skeptical of trusting any rating.

"The international evidence...is that one in two children between 11 and 18 who witness smoking in movies actually experiment with - and therefore start - smoking themselves," Mr Hull said of recent research.

Saving Ryan's Privates historic? I know what you mean, it brings some of the grim reality to life but I'm sure there was at least one Brit on that beach!

Ah, you lose smartarse, Omaha was an almost entirely US landing- the normandy landings were split nationally. No U-571 here  The british were off at Sword and Gold, and out at sea, and airbourne.

Fwiw I had a chat with my daughter about it on saturday and asked her if she understood the underlying current of the film, that 7 men are too risk there lives for the sake of one , but it seems nothing was disussed and in fact the teacher stopped the film 10 mins before the end cos it was home time so they havent in fact even seen the ending yet, which kinda diminishes the power of the film I think, anyway, apparently the whole class thought it funny when the soldier on the beach was looking for his arm after it being blown of, I suppose a generation brought up on GTA 4 and other violent games and films has a different view on things, desesnitised even, which cant be good.

My girlfriend is a teacher and she has shown Saving Private Ryan to the class. Not sure what age, final year GCSE I think.

She did think twice but gave them the option to see it and then did whatever coursework that was needed. (i may not have been listening when she was talking to me about it)

Teenagers seem fairly grown-up, plenty of drinking, smoking and pregnancy in the south yorkshire teens so whats a bit and blood.
