View Full Version : New 3G iPhone - will you get one?
After using one for a weekend (the first version) I have to say that it's superb! I'm not an Apple fan but with this they've really done wonders!!
What I especially loved was the internet surfing. My grief with the existing phones is that due to the size of the screen you cannot view pages properly and have to scroll from left to right to get a full view. Now the iphone will resize that for you and you only need to tap the screen for it to focus on something. Obviously, things like email (read/write) is easier due to the screen as well.
The new 3G version will have faster internet and not a great rip-off to get as well! £35 per month plus £99 for the 8GB version with O2
I'm tempted.....you? :)

I think I'll move back to Pre-pay ;) £35/month was unheard of 5 years ago!

Well depends what you use your phone for really :) But 5 years ago you didn't get the amount of "free" stuff they throw in now......like loads of free mins, sms, free internet via 3G, free Wi-Fi access from hotspots etc
I'm not saying £35 is cheap but I look at it from a perspective of you get what you pay for

I'm seriously tempted by it, to replace my Windows no-so-smart-phone. If the iPhone is as good as everyone is saying it is, then I might well end up getting one. £35 a month is only a tenner more than I'm paying at the moment.
my option for an upgrade this year is the HTC TYTN II but being windows and the screen size is not helping :( saying that though I'm on a £10 per month contract with 600mins with Three.......upgrade will take me probably to £15 per month so it is an increase if I go for the iPhone.....but it does all I want and very well :D
Although i really like the I-phone interface, i find it massive i also dont have much use for the net whilst on the move.
However, before you rush out and buy the non expandable i-phone, have a look at the new Sony X1. Its due out later this year, and looks pretty smart.
Myself, i'm wiaitng on a good old Candybar 6220 Classic. It has everything i need plus i dont have to sign up to an 18 month contract which you will with the i-phone, and i suspect the batteries will be pretty dead by that time if i-pods are anything to go by :(
Its still another design classic from the fruit farmers :)
im seriously tempted too, however i wont commit to an 18month contract.
However, they will be a pay as you go version according to o2! :smt031
Sold! (If its not stupidly expencive to buy on pay as you go)
I can't believe this actually made the news yesterday. Every hour on the radio, the newsreader was wittering on about a new phone being launched. Ok, if The Gadget Show tells me about it, fine, but THE NEWS???

Nope.
Well if it's £100 with a contract I reckon the PAYG version will be expensive. Plus you can't use it with anything else apart from an O2 sim......unless you get it unlocked.

Nope...:
- It's Apple. - well spotted
- Unmodifiable. - What do you want? Neon lights? My N95 isn't exactly modifiable
- Any extras will be expensive Apple branded. - Apple products are supported by so many third-party companies. My Sony on the other hand isn't even supported by Sony! The competition and universal ports keep costs down
- Any games/applications will all be Apple ones and will most likely cost extra. - It's been opened up to developers so quite the opposite. Anyone who knows apples will know the free aftermarket software market is unrivalled
- I'm not a sucker for Marketing. - The LG is one of the most heavily advertised phones out there! ;)
(However I've already got the LG Viewty!!!)
I'm not picking on you, but the one thing that annoys me more than a smug-mac-owner (and that's tough to beat;)), is people who are so against Apple just not to conform. Their products are excellent, hence why they dominate the market.
I would argue that their marketing is excellent. There are products on the market that are just as good and can be had for less money but Apple have the image.

At least there are sensible people out there:) !! At last a radio station that doesn't give me headache.....I choose to ignore the fact that I must have missed the news bit on it LOL

- I'm not a sucker for Marketing. - I think you are! The LG you have couldn't have been advertised more!! Also I've used it and the screen is far inferior to the iPhones technology.
Don't get me wrong! Nice phone but lets compare similar things here

It's the attention to detail on Apple products that makes them special. I've currently got an O2 XDA Orbit, with Windows Mobile and the usability is frankly rubbish. Just to give an example of just one of the issues I have with it - you can enter birthdays for people you know, but there's no integration between Contacts and Calendar. So birthdays don't show up in the Calendar and you won't be given reminders about them. This lack of attention to detail and proper integration is just one of the reasons that I hate Windows Mobile.
I'd be very surprised if the iPhone is as badly thought out as this, given Apple's obsessiveness with usability. O2 are doing it on a £30/month contract and I've just registered my interest. I'm due for an upgrade from O2 this month anyway.
The things i dont like about the i-phone
The battery is integral, so you have to get it replaced when it fails.
The memory is not expandable ( i know you can get a 16mb version, but i would use it as a music player more, and i neeeeeeeeed MB's ;))
The camera is a lowly 2mp not good for a state of the art phone
The battery life is ok, but not great
Its quite big in comparisson
It hasnt got push email
Its on an 18 month contract!
I like

I'm more partial to HTC products because they can allow me to do more, with all the free software thats out there.
Watching films on my orbit is easy and available anywhere ( and free ;-) ), not too sure about Apples i-phone.
Even so my orbit is old now it's still a bloody good phone, where as with the i-phone I can see myself getting fed up with it.
I do like the interface alot and the way it browses the web, but other than that I think it's far too useless and expensive.
When I can afford to upgrade, the i-phone will not be making my short list that's for sure.

Disagree. I'm an Apple user because I've got 20 years Unix experience and OS X is simply the best desktop Unix (& IMO best desktop OS) out there. I used Linux for years before switching to Mac and, for desktop use, the Mac beats Linux hands down. I'm not biased here. I love Linux and I'm an embedded Linux developer. It's just that Apple stuff works a whole lot better and is far less frustrating to use than anything else.
I'll repeat that last point as it's so important to me - 'far less frustrating to use'. My O2 XDA Orbit (HTC Artemis) with Windows Mobile can be extremely frustration. It's nearly very very good indeed, but there are so many niggling things wrong that it's often a total pain in the backside.
I wouldn't buy an Air, but I can understand why people would. Just because a product doesn't appeal to you, doesn't make it rubbish.
I never intended to become an Apple convert. I bought an iMac for Mrs Wyrdness to use, as she complained about my homebrew PCs. I had my own linux box (a huge tower system), stuffed full of disks. However, I found myself using the Mac all of the time, rather than the Linux box and eventually switched completely. I still ssh to one of my Macs and use Pine on it to read my email!

Hehe :lol:
You've obviously not played with the free developer tools ;)
The huge majority of people need a computer they can't break. I've no idea how my mother can consistently mess up her registry, lose programs/files....I reckon if she was left alone on the net she could wipe the bugger!
Apple hide the unecessary tools so you're left with what you need. IF you require to see something in more depth; it is there, just not on the main menu.
Microsoft by comparison need to do everything by bloody wizards:
'Welcome to type a word wizard'
<NEXT>
'type the first letter of your word'
<C>
<NEXT>
'type the second letter in your word'
<A>
<NEXT>
'type the third letter of your word'
<C>
<NEXT>
'type the fourth letter in your word'
<K>
<NEXT>
'It appears you're writing a letter, can I **** it up for you?'
..bleh
I was under the impression that Macs where Linux based not unix based.
Oh and 600+, I need 32gb minimum for movies and music. As for the camera, i understand waht you are saying, but this is meant to be the phone to beat all phones, yet it comes out with a 2mp camera, not even a 3.2 which is possible. 5mp would be better. As for the MB, i meant Gb.

If I can buy one without the contract for £100, use some unlock wizard then stick my vodafone sim in it that is paid for by work then I would have one now.

I think I'll go with Wyrdness on this one.... they are simple to use and that's it. As well as the fact that it plugs nicely into the Bose systems I own, and charges while I'm effortlessly listening to music. I looks nice next to my shiny TV, laptop and sound system, so I don't care that I can't mod it. It is also a huge bonus that my gf can use it unsupervised without me fretting that she's going to press the wrong button in error and mess it up.
I have an entire 40 server network to feck around with and test stuff on at work. I spend my whole day doing that stuff, and really don't want the hassle when I get home.
Simply simple.
I like it, now that its cheaper I may get one, since I'm on o2 anyway and paying about 30 quid a month.
We'll see, I've got to get a bike on the road before I think about something like that :p

I currently have the XDA Orbit and will certainly consider the iPhone. I have alsos seen the new HTC Diamond which a good competitor so will have to have a look at both when they come out. I am due an upgrade on O2 and told them I wanted to wait now that I am out of contract....they offered me to go on a ?15/month rolling 30 day contract until I have made up my mind, saving me ?20/month to boot!
I currently have the XDA Orbit
I've just recently upgraded to the Orbit II. It's a much nicer unit than the original.
Oh god, apple's patented reality distortion field is slowly spreading to the org. The world as I know it, is about to end...
I wanted an iPhone when they first came out, but I'm currently on PAYG spending £5-£10 a month, so the £170 + £35pm was a bitter pill to swallow!
I got an iPod touch instead and its great. Can't put it down.
Registered for the cloud wifi but never used it. No access at one heathrow terminal when I was there in jan, no access in service stations, only in a few pubs (where I don't want Internet usually) so that's been cancelled. Free wifi and occasional payg wifi at airports is more cost effective for me.
The only annoying thing is that you can't copy and paste links which is useful on forums.
I'm tempted back for the 3g iPhone; if the gps has decent sat-nav applications, but I don't think I can justify it against my iPod touch and payg setup.
Eta: its nice watching DVD's, video podcasts etc if I'm travelling. And the iPod touch does what it does seamlessly. Works for me!
Ooh, I'll take the W850i off your hands!!!
Ill let you know Phil, watch this space ;-)

I decided to upgrade my XDA Orbit from Windows Mobile 5 to Windows Mobile 6 today.
So I followed the instructions about backing up my data by syncing it to my work PC using Windows ActiveSync.
The upgrade itself went (fairly) smoothly, apart from one worrying moment but, as expected, wiped the phone completely clean.
No matter, I have a backup.
So I resynced it with Windows and, yes, all of my contacts and calendar went back onto the phone.
Now I keep my personal contacts and calendar on my phone and my work ones on my PC. So now both PC and phone are synced with work and personal stuff. So what I need to do is to de-sync them and remove the personal stuff from the work PC and the work stuff from the phone.
Guess what? Can't do it. Microsoft won't let you.
If I de-sync the two, Microsoft deletes everything from the phone. There's no way around this. I've tried everything. It assumes that the data 'belongs' to the PC and when you remove the synchronisation, it removes all of the data from the phone. I spent hours trying to work around this. I copied all of my contacts on the phone, one by one. Then de-synched. It deleted all of the copies too. I tried copying the data file itself, then de-syncing, then replacing the data file. That didn't work either.
Eventually, I exported all of the contacts from Outlook as v-cards and then had to re-import them into the phone one by one.
So what right does f***ing Microsoft have to delete my data from my phone without permission? I'm getting rid of this piece of sh!t, buying an iPhone and never, ever buying a Windows Mobile device again.
Right now, I want the cnut at Microsoft whose idea this was, and a baseball bat.

i'm buying an iphone because i think it looks cool, i like shiney gadgets and i'm a sucker for fashionable things!!! i dont care, i'm happy to admit that.

Err... you don't need to desync. Just plug the phone in again and it'll sync with whatever data you have in Outlook on the same PC.
Been there, done that more times than I care to count while "upgrading" my HTC P3300, then when that one got stolen I sync'd my new Touch Cruise the same way (twice, first time when I got it out of the box and the second one when I "upgraded" it).
Just plug it in and tell it to sync (don't forget to tell ActiveSync to discard data on phone and replace it with the PC copy).

My point is, that I don't want it to sync with the PC. I want to keep my personal stuff on my phone and my work stuff on my PC.
There's no way to de-sync. If you do so, then Windows Mobile will delete your contact names and phone numbers.
I don't want to see all of my work appointments - especially daily reminders - on my phone. But I can't do this without Windows deleting all of my personal appointments. If I delete the work appointments from the phone, it f***ing deletes them from Outlook on my work PC too. There appears to be no way to stop this. It's absolute rubbish.
Can't you just set Activesync NOT to sync the contacts? I sync my calendar but not my contacts and have never had a problem?

Who got one then? I walked past carphone warehouse and saw 5 or so people in the queue, thought I'd go to the o2 store, then came back to carphone warehouse after seeing about 60 people waiting at o2! It took about ten minutes to actually buy it, I was far luckier than others in the queue.
It's a great little thing :) the sim should be activated tomorrow am at long last.

iPhone are great, when they work. Not 100% sure about the build quality to be honest. Mine has given me all sorts of jip with the WiFi and it crashes all the time! The latest problem is that the phone only works on speaker phone, hate using it now as I feel like an Apprentice wannabe. No multiple text facility also not good and the notes function is rubbish, no copy and paste etc. Downloading from PC to iPhone also been a right pain requiring multiple synchs to get a connection, and now that's given up all together. It let me down in the middle of nowhere when it refused to work at all, not even turning on, then sprang back as if nothing happened the next day! Roaming in Europe cost me a fortune to RECEIVE calls..... I could go on, but it's only 6 months old and it got seriously worse just before the new one 3G effort was announced. The number of iPod's that seem to implode the ay after the warrenty has run out is making me slightly suspicious!
I'm locked into a contract now, so I'll be updating.

I got the 8gig one, I wanted the 16gig but they sold out pretty much easily, and I didn't want to wait weeks for one. I went through iTunes and narrowed down 35gigs of music and only put on what i actually listened to, about 2gigs, so there's still plenty of space. Got mine Friday morning, been conditioning the battery over the weekend while I wait for my number to port across. Great phone - iPlayer on the move is brilliant - although really only works on wifi.
Really looking forward to using it for real - I have ordered a number of covers/cases off of ebay from China, so hope they arrive in time so I don't trash it. Need to get a screen protector aswell.
Looks great, haven't needed to look at the instructions. Use a Mac at home so syncing it with all details across was soooo easy - inc. internet favourites.
Looking forward to trying out the new GPS functions, although I need to find a replacement for Sports Tracker that I use regularly on my N95 to track and time my exercise on the bike (push bike)

I tried to get one on the day they came out, and my local o2 shop is ****ty and I have had a few conflicting reports on getting one, they're now out of stock and as I shelled out £270 for the original and was told I'd be able to get the first update, I'm a little annoyed. Aside from that, the app store is great!
Can't be ars ed reading all the posts, but am quite chuffed to be the owner of a brand spanking new Samgsung Tocco (F480) Mate at work has the I-Phone and to quote a loser, "Oh I wish I had waited for that"
Small, stylish, light, fashionable, good to touch, basically, all the things I am not. I live vicariosuly through technology....
It's touch screen all over, only virtual keys, speakers by (according to the spotty teen at phones 4 you) Bang and Olufsen (yeah, right!) and 'cos I am an argumentative sod (and happened to be adorned in hi-viz and body armour) I have it at £25 a month, 400 mins calls, unlimited texts, unlimited surfing AND £90 cash back!
Aren't I lucky!
No because you should have got the HTC touch daimond ;)
Why didnt you just order online/over the phone? Why go to the shop to get it?

I don't understand it. A phone is a phone. You talk in them and your voice comes out on another one somewhere else in the world. Why the fuss.
Beyond that it does nothing else worth talking about.
Now if somebody would do a portable device I could point at a wall/piece of paper to give me a high resolution screen, a full size virtual keyboard, a couple of hundred gigabyte of storage, Gb wireless network, multiple processors, optimized for video processing, hardware encryption processing etc. I.E a portable device for the real world then maybe I could persuade my bosses to buy me one. Until then I guess I will carry on using a phone and laptop

The touch diamond looks like a lovely phone.
BUT.....
It still uses Windows Mobile, so I wouldn't touch it with somebody else's barge pole. I am never again buying a phone with Windows Mobile - it sucks giant donkey balls. Why make a lovely phone and then put that steaming pile of poo software on it?
No thanks.

It's really not that bad. I'll crash Symbian based phones (Nokia N-series, for instance) or SonyEricsson ones faster than I can crash the HTC in normal use. Of course if I'm actually trying then things could be a bit different :lol:

apple...no. sorry but the i phone does not compare to other phones on the market.
if your interested in the i phone, then samsung do a much better phone. all touch, 5mp camera. with a flash! video, etc. everything the i phbone comes with. one of my freinds has one and its really really good. would recomend that over the i phone definatly.
apple are huge in design. they design really nice products, but in terms of technology they loose points. (except for their top of the range systems.) take the air for example. really neat design, really thin etc, but to install anything or play a cd, you need to buy a seperate cd drive air thingy. not worth it in my eyes. but for fahion conscious people they love it. i done a whole research paper for my degree on apple and their products, and how they compare to other products on the market. really well made and deisgned with fashion in mind, and a huge brand awwarenes, which unfortunatly puts them up high in the products people would by. shame really
I bought a new iphone 2 on friday and decided to give it to the wife for her birthday insted but she wants a samsung tocco instead, cuh women eh ? :rolleyes:

i'm happy with this n95 8gig now i'm used to it, it all does what it says it does and the 5mill pixel camea is great! just gotta find out how to get em on to pc now :)
Well I have a 16gb first gen iPhone, that I got 3 months ago for ?329. To say I was a bit sick when they announced the new one for ?159 would be an understatement, and I was poised to upgrade, but I decided to wait for the rush to go down. I have loaded 2.0 on the phone over the weekend and it is great. Im sure its a little slower what with all the added features but its running fine now. The App store is marvelous, many a handy application that can be downloaded on the fly. I'm off on honeymoon to Milan in three weeks and downloaded a italian language app that pronounces useful phrases for you. Very handy and free! Also there is the Remote application that lets you control your entire iTunes library with your phone, over a WiFi network. This works very well and is very useful.
The iPhone is not without its limitations, but the main thing about it is that it works. It just does. I am an unfortunate Windows user and as soon as funds allow I shall be upgrading to a Mac. I think they are worth it purely for the amount of time you save from messing around with errors and other problems with Windows based hardware.
Vistas bloody security is a joke, I log in as an administrator, go to delete a file, get warned and asked if I'm sure that I want to delete it, get told to confirm I'm an administrator, and then get told, sorry cannot delete as you need to be an administrator! Grrrr! 99% of these problems disappear with Apple. I can understand people saying that they don't see the big deal with "just a phone" but I after just a day or two of using it, could not even imagine going back to any other device.
With regards to the 3G, I think it is a superb offer for new customers, but I think I'm going to wait until the next version which will probably have a bigger difference than what the new one offers over the original, and besides, I love and prefer the look of the original. :)

Online orders were sold out on July 11th first thing in the morning after taking 13000 orders a minute apparantly, so I failed there.

I use both an N95 (work phone) and an iPhone 3G.
I love both. The N95 has a great camera phone, sports tracker is excellent and web is passable. iPhone is excellent for web, email and apps.
I would never use a Windows Mobile again - I have had 2 in the past and they were both useless - loved them to start off with, but droppinh 8-10 calls a day due to crashes and general windows nonsense really wound me up - thank good I am not self employed/freelance as I would have lost soooo much business thanks to M$. Truly awful. I love the look of the Diamond, but simply couldn't trust it in a business environment
I hear its great.
But - my dad has one so it must be un-cool.
Sadly I cant get one because he has one. It would have been ok if I had mine first, aint I sad.
It'll be great when o2 set up my flipping number.. Grr! good job i have another phone and number, and haven't cancelled the contract yet..
Well I'm getting one for a few reasons. I know I don't have to justify it but my O2 phone is up for renewal, I want an ipod and I want sat nav or near as damnit. This seems perfect for me. Oh yeah and the Missus will be jealous and give me lots of kissy time if I let her look and touch it sometimes. Another oh yeah; I can spy on the org when I'm supposed to be working! Does anyone know if a laptop can be plugged in to use the net like that? I must admit I'm a bit disapointed in the camera but for the amount of pics I take with mine I'll let that go. I will be able to completely reset my N93 and gaffa tape it to my bike now to film stuff too!
BTW apparently apple will upgrade the old version for free. I heard that on the news or the gadget show I think.
:)
Well it's here! I've been playing with it for a few hours now and I'm really impressed. I'm writing this on it. Bit diddly but the text dictionary is brilliant. Going to test the maps now.
:)
i got mine last week! i absolutely love it. its just such a top gadget! only problem i've had so far is when you sit and surf online all day, play with gps, listening to itunes, browse your pics etc...... the battery will only last the day.
i'm still amazed at how it knows what i'm wanting to write!

I've just done 3 days, including using maps and it hasn't needed a charge - although I have been careful to try and condition the battery - no idea if it makes a difference, but my battery life is good.
Have just applied a screen protector, which was a real pain to do, but might stop the scratches. I also bought a leather slip case from china (off the 'bay)which protects it from the keys in my pocket. Think it cost about 5 quid delivered - better than the £20 CPW wanted for theirs
