From the Daily Torygraph:

Claire Birchell, 25, was told she could not buy the Jack Daniel's barbecue sauce which has an alcohol content of 2 per cent. Staff at the store in in Flitwick, near Bedford also refused to sell the bottle to her brother-in-law, Philip Dover, 27, who did have ID, because they believed he would just give the bottle to Miss Birchell.

Mr Dover said: 'We just could not believe it. It's not as if we were going to go and sit down the park drinking it.

Haha, what a bunch of :toss:

The law says that if you leave a shop without making any attempt to pay for your goods then its theft.
However when i get stroppy shop staff i clearly tell them that i'm attempting to pay for my goods and if they dont want my money then i'll happily take the goods for free and start walking to the door. They quickly want the money then...or they call security who just give then filthy looks for wasting their time (like i used to)Worst comes to the worst i've been known to litteraly throw the money on the floor for them to pick up and walk away...hey if they wanna be rude and obnoxious then 2 can play that game and the customer is always right, right

I remember a while back, a couple of nippers bought their mum some chocolate liqueurs for mothersday. The silly bint proceeded to complain to the store that sold them to the kids because "they could have been buying them for themselves to drink the alcohol in them". Never mind that you'd throw up from eating too much chocolate (or in this case BBQ sauce) before you got drunk....

It's precisely this sort treating alcohol like it's heroin and trying to make it so difficult to buy that makes it so appealing to the kids. I strongly suspect that the reason there isn't such a problem with binge drinking amongst the youth on the continent is down to the fact they have a glass with a meal at home reasonably regularly and hence it's not seen as taboo and exciting.

What really winds them up is if you just refuse all the goods at the checkout and leave them there, especially if it is fresh food from the deli, you havent stolen anything and not damaged anything;)

I did the same trick at a motorway services. I was stood waiting at the counter 20 minutes with a breakfast going cold while they cooked some fresh eggs. I only had another 10 minutes for my break left.

When I left it on the till they were threatening to call the police:)
