Hi all,
Going down London way from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne next week to see the parents. Haven't done the journey on the bike yet so whats the best way to go? Down the A1(M) or down the M1? I need the best route down to joining the M25. (Whichever is not gonna make me do this :smt013 too much!)
Any advice much appreciated!;)

where is your final destination? if possible i'd say take the A1 M as the M1 has loads of sh1tty road works down near luton atm. with average speed cameras and that (not that bikes get caught by em).

I'd use the A1(M) if I were you. What day/time are you going? It makes a huge difference. BTW I do long distance pretty often and I've found if you sit at 70 you'll get over 200 miles to a tank. Take in to account you don't stop so often it works out taking the same amount of time, whilst being easier on the pocket and brain :)

+1 for the A1(M). Too many roadworks at the M1 M25 junction. Was down there yesterday and it was a nightmare! :smt013

I'd probably pick the A1, for reasons stated above. Plus the A1 has roundabouts that help to break up the monotony of the journey.

Small world I lived there from a long time, some might say too long! If you want come off the A41 at Hemel and ride the old road, its slower but has some twisty bits here and there.
I guess you will come off the A1 and pick up the M25 at J22 and ride round to J20 right and then A41?

A1(M) but a number of the roundabouts have been bypassed:(
A1 if you're going this weekend for sure, the Traffic for download festival on the M1 around J24/a will be a bitch!
A1 is just as bad for roadworks betweem doncaster and newark.
Leaving newcastle at 9am you will be hitting the bad areas on the M1 at very quite times.....and for that reason I vote M1 as it will be quicker than the A1 which is a horrible, boring camera littered road until huttingdon.
I vary between M1/A1/M11 depending which side of london I'm going and what the traffic reports say.
At the time your going, defo M1, half these londeners probably dont realise the country carrys on past bedford lol ;)
cheers

I wouldnt touch M1 at all, use A1 to Alconbury and then A14 - M11 if you are going anywhere East of Watford. But dont forget there are some other roads like the A15 and A46 if you have some time

Thanks everyone. I'll be taking A1(M) as I'm in no rush to get there. Once I hit M25 I know where I'll be going (only moved up north in Jan 08) I just wanted the easiest route without too much hassle. Thanks everyone!
For those of you around the Watford/Hemel area if you are going up to Donington there's a group of us going up on the Sunday very early in the morning if you fancy going in convoy??
