....just make sure you cut a big enough hole in the battery box...
...and watch the battery clearance if its a K6.
Other than that its a doddle...after all I managed it.

Ok so here goes .........

SV put up on paddock stand to gain a bit of height .

Rear end stripped down and axle stands ready to go under the frame .

There she is .... the naffest shock I`ve ever experienced :smt086

GSXR1000 K4 shock in all it`s lonely Glory :smt022

Removed old shock and took undertray out .
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v605/xXBADGERXx/EbayStuff007.jpg
Modified battery box , cut lugs off the right hand side and used a drill to cut away a portion so that it doesn`t foul the reservoir on top of the GSXR shock , Bit rough but who cares
All went particularly smoothly , plenty of copaslip was used and a rubber mallet to "persuade" the top of the GSXR shock into place . Bottom of shock was a different matter with plenty of faffing about to get things into place , bolt was inserted in from the right with the nut on the left and everything was tightened up . Bike was re-assembled and electrics etc tested to make sure all was well . Quick spot around the bike to make sure nothing was missed ....... and she was started up .
OH MY GOD .... what a difference . I went to Llandudno to pick up some exhaust paste for a friend and decided to come back via a local twisty lane . It was raining all afternoon so things were a bit slippery . This local lane I usually corner at 70 tops ...... I was being chased by some souped up VW Golf so decided to get a wriggle on and dust him off . I was cornering around the 90mph mark and letting the throttle off and coasting her down to 70 for some of the nastier bends ....... even in the wet the back end felt way better and I`m sure I could have given it a bit more ....... the VW was dealt a slap in the face as I was already entering the last bend after a straight and his lights appeared as I lined the bend up and decimated it :p .
It all took around 3 hours to do with Tea/Ciggy breaks and numerous texts to the Badgeress as she informed me of the progress of her hair styling appointment ... I informed her of my new shock progress but got texts back along the lines of "that`s great Hun" ---- what the hell is he on about ? . I just said it would be better for her on the back and she was happy with that :smt054 . This has to be the best thing you can do for your bike and yourself , now for the front end !!!!!! I can see some new springs and heavier oil on the cards in a couple of months time , easy to do ?

Another one in the eye for the people who say its a stupid idea fitting a shock not intended for the SV!! 8)

If you look closely that plastic tail is holding my Scottoiler Magnum Touring reservoir behind the number plate , would rather have that on than a tail tidy as I am inherently lazy when it comes to chain oiling , plus it keeps a lot of rear wheel spray down ....... I like the Snowplough anyway .
Yes Flymo I am forever in gratitude to you for supplying me the shock and the advice , went out today and that bike felt so smoooooooth .

When you have ridden an OEM, Foriegn, or Ohlins (and the others brands) shock back to back then I may take notice of this comment.
A SV specific shock is far better!

 But I NOW have an Ohlins shock too ... so I've ridden stock, ZX6 AND Ohlins ...
Just got hold of my GSXR thou K4 shock the other day and i was thinking about fitting it tomorrow so was looking for this type of thread so i would know where to cut, when you say right hand side is that right hand side of the bike as your sat on it?
Also has any one got any closer up pics i could see?
Thanks

Yeah the bolt was threaded in from the right as if you are sat on it . Those were the only pictures I managed to take and it was quite a while ago as well .
Ok cool and the battery has to be moved as well? im kinda thinking of not bothering now...

What year SV have you got ?

All you have to do is cut the battery box to allow room for the reservoir , and I removed some sort of waffle thing from under the battery , honestly it`s hardly anything with regards to the battery box .
Ah cool, ill have a look at it tomorrow, had a quick look around at it earlier but cant see much without it apart, thanks for the info

Well
Fitted mine today, bought the nut for the bottom bolt by getting the part number from ron ayers, go to fit it, too big... ARGHHHHHH its 5.30 how am i going to get one now  looked around workshop and luckily found one but the bike back together, set the rear preload up, softed both damping settings by one click and a bit more front preload went and tested and omg i love it :D went through a lane i frequent weekly and i must of gained 10mph (considering this is 8.30 at night) even got my toe down through the lanes (which i have only done on roundabouts) big improvement, need to play a bit more though
This seems to be a well liked mod for the sv's. I just purchased a k4 myself for my first bike - what kind of bobs would this modification set me back (Front & Rear)?
May be something I would look into in a few months...

Front anywhere from nowt to £100-200 after you've sold all your bits (tip is to buy as much Gixer front end stuff as you can in one hit i.e. as complete as possible and preferably in the winter when prices are cheaper).
Rear shock you should get for £40-50 all year round.

Rear shock is around the £50 mark , front springs tend to be around £75 , have a look at Hyperpro/Maxton/Hagon kits , there are other makes too . The "For Sale" section on this site sometimes throws up this kit . I think there is a shock for sale in one of the threads there at the moment , give me a moment and I will link it .

Nobody has mentioned GSXR front ends in this thread , we have only talked about GSXR Rear Shocks and better Springs for the front . Complete front end swaps have been done to death in other threads and I would rather keep that out of this thread to not confuse the issue anymore .
Cheers lads - won't have the funds for it just yet and heading on hols for two weeks next sat so will be Aug / Sept before I look into this.
So I should get a GSXR 1000 shock for around the 50 mark - then either replace the front end with a gsxr front end 100/200 or just a spring kit and oil upgrade for the current front end.
Think this may happen over the winter though as it seems to greatly improve the handling...

New (Hagon/Maxton) springs and oil will make a BIG difference to the front end and, as Badger says, Gixer front end is a whole new kettle of fish (with lots of threads on it already).
Gixer rear shock is good improvement over stock.

That thread has Springs and Rear Shock for a total of £100 , which is about the right price , if you are gonna talk GSXR front ends then do a search on the forum for that as there a loads of threads about them . Personally I have done the front Springs with 15wt oil and the GSXR rear and I ride the heck out of my bike without any worries whatsoever .... a GSXR front end is an uneccessary extravagance in my humble opinion and a whole heap more expensive .
Cool - thanks lads - will price up some of the spring kits mentioned above and a k5 gsxr 1000 shock for a winter upgrade :-)
May use the other threads to look into the front end swap at a later stage with a separate thread

The real pain in the butt with it all is actually finding nice ones for sale in the first place , the rears are always around , the front stuff tends to appear when you have no money then vanish the moment you have the readies for it . I sat on the money for ages for a set of springs , had enough to buy new ones and was almost ordering some when somebody gave me the heads up on the forum over some used ones and from a rider of similar weight as well ..... result :) , they were fitted a week later and the transformation was immediate , so much so that I chased down a Thundercat and overtook him without breaking a sweat , whereas beforehand I would have been in the bend going "please don`t kill me , please don`t kill me"
No waffle needed removing just that right anlge bit of plastic that is like a blanking plate oppisite to the tip over sensor when that shock was on my k3
Weirdfish

Will the GSXR1000K4 fit an SVK8, bearing in mind there was a slight model change post 04? If not which rear shock would be best for a K8?
Cheers

Not sure if they're the same but I've got a K3 1000 Gixer shock on my SK8.
Do a search for shock table, you should get a list of shocks/sizes and spring rates.
