I'm going to start looking for a job in the chemistry industry, but I don't know where to begin. I was hoping to have a PhD confirmed by now, but that is looking less and less likely - all to do with avaliability of funding, which dosn't seem to be avaliable :( it is taking what feels like a long time to get confirmed :(
So where should I start? What websites? Nature jobs isn't very usefull, there is no good search engine so its difficult to find suitable jobs. I'll look at new scientist jobs when their website is up and running, its down at the moment. Is anyone aware of any businesses / companies in the london area that deal with chemistry?
Cheers,
Matt

Totaljobs.com or Jobsite are quite good for science jobs, both permanent and temp ones. Both myself and my hubby have used them and he recently got a new job after applying through one of the job sites.
Good luck with your search and sorry about the PhD not looking likely :(

Check out the HPA website we may have some jobs in Collindale. You could always try any of the Uni's in London they often have jobs going.
Set your own Meth lab up.. nothing like being your own boss ;)

Have you tried New Scientist? http://www.newscientistjobs.com/jobs/default.aspx Thats where i looked for jobs when i got my degree. There are also Science agencies, will try and remember the other one i used and also a friend of mine got her job through a science agency too.

what sort of science job are you after? research? if not research then theres a lot of jobs in scientific sales and support, or even recruitment.
As for the funding, hand in there, these things take longer than you think for funding to be confirmed. Thats the problem at the moment though, many people are anti students, so funding is reduced, and so less PhDs are available. which in the long term provides a lot of the best research in science.

are you willing to provide some investment for the initial start up ;)
Sam - yea, i'll look there...their website seems to be down when i click on links to it though.
James - I primarily want a job working in a lab as a research / development / synthetic chemist (a bench monkey!). I've found some job vacancies on totaljobs (thanks amanda) so I'm applying for those. I'll most certainly hold out for the PhD though, because its very interesting (organic semiconducting polymers for use in photovoltaic cells) and i would love to do a PhD anyway, as that qualification would help me somewhat to becoming a lecturer in my own right later in life.
Thanks everyone for everything so far
Matt
http://jobs.guardian.co.uk/ is good.
Have you used your uni careers facilities?

uni career's facilities....didnt think of that. Mind you, they don;t seem such great cop when I've looked at stuff in the past. Worth a try though
and I'll give gaurdian jobs a whirl too

I think they're stuggling with their double-helix structure of the exterius-chees-crustiol. Never been a fan of the cheesy twisty crust myself though.

If that's what you have to call it so you can sleep at night...

evidence to suggest its just a single helix, but forms a double helix in pizziro by a complicated un-ravelling and the dimerisation through hydrogen bonding at key pizzarone and pizzaol side groups

And that's why you're the scientist and I'm the pizza eater ;)
(I even had a letter delivered the other day addressed; 'Dear Pizza Eater')

Hmmm. Most luck I had getting my job was brown-nosing through conferences. Its who you know, not what you know. If you are interested in one particular area, find out the labs doing research on that and try emailing them directly.

Thanks warthog, i don't doubt for a moment that what you say is true. Maria is having loads of trouble getting a suitable permanent job, I expect I will suffer the same torment.
I thought that most graduate jobs were advertised looong before finals time. I seem to remember applying for jobs well before the easter hols and poss before christmas.

DON'T do it money in science is shi*e!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even in mol biol allegelgdy a well funded section, i'm empolying 2 Phd's on much less than 20,000 to be lab rats its mad!!
too many Ph'ds not enough technically competant people, just well book qualifed people expecting decent salaries which the science industry can't afford
sorry for the rant

Funnily enough the money is not really in science anymore, its supplying science! look at what scientific sales reps get. Thats why throughout my PhD i have got trained on just about every bit of equipment i can.

I'm not doing science soley for the money...im doing it because I beleive I have something to offer to the scientific community ;) the moneys not great, but its not as if i can't live off it either, nor will i be unable afford the things I want (a place to live, a nice TV, another guitar and amp etc). The challenges are there, problems I know I can solve
Chemistry is all I know how to do, so do it I will :D
