Harriet Harman has defended plans to make it legal for firms to discriminate in favour of female and ethnic minorities job candidates. The equalities minister said firms should be able to choose a woman over a man of equal ability if they wanted to.

Female part-time workers still earned 40% less per hour than their full-time male counterparts, Ms Harman told Today. "Do we think she is 40% less intelligent, less committed, less hard-working, less qualified? It's not the case. It's entrenched discrimination. It's allowed to persist because it's all swept under the carpet."

She's a witch that woman. Those figures aren't even manipulated, they're not even a like-for-like comparison!

Aren't men already discriminated against as we have to work an extra 5 years before we retire? That we're expected to put more hours in? That we get assigned the brunt of the physical jobs in part-time work with no extra pay (try working in a bar!)? That women aren't expected to be on the front line in conflict? Or simply that we're expected to pay for everything in a 'traditional' male role whilst adopting a 'modern man' approach who cooks, cleans and generally waits hand and foot for women. I'm afraid she's only going to kick start more of a rebellion.

We've got a new post coming up, we've got equally qualified men and women going for it, we are going to pick the woman because we want to have a more balanced top team.
That's not an example of discrimination whatsoever. That's all about choosing the right person for the job. If a female is considered more approriate for the job, then obviously the female should be hired.

The job in the example is obviously something involving the kitchen. *runs, very quickly*

Edit: There's actually a girl sat at the other side of the desk to me, on 80% of the pay that I'm on. She's broadly around the same skill set as me, and definately able to handle to the work just as much as I am.

The reason that she's on less pay is frankly, that the company are f**king about with her. She was with us from an agency for 4 months, then the company took her from the agency. That was 3 months ago. So now she's on her probationary period, which lasts 6 months from commencement of employment.

Do you really think that this silly plan will make any difference? Trust me kiddo, as a minority myself I can assure you that prejudice is alive and well in this country, I have just lost my job due to it.

Bullied out of a job I was very good at because I am gay, over looked for promotion because my face does not fit and now waiting to take it all to court. :smt013

While there are sexist, racist S**tbags in control, discrimination will continue anyway, positive or not.:smt099

I abhor any form of discrimination. There is no need for it.

However, I do get the feeling some of these comparisons exist simply for the sake of it.

Most businesses have a salary structure. A grade/step type system. You apply for a job. That is the salary that goes with the job. Are they trying to say a female engineer earns less than her male counterpart. I don't think so. Or are they saying that because woman tend to make up the majority of low paid/part time roles etc. Then the average Salary for a woman is less than that for a man.

Statistics for the sake of it and a totally unfair way of comparing salaries.

As for workplace bullying. I have had female staff who enjoy working in a traditional male environment. One said it was less bitching and more letching. Another who would complain she was not getting her fair share of sexual harassment. Of course they were being good natured about things and obviously happy in their environment.

I would have thought woman would be bigger bullies of other woman/lesbians etc than men ever would.

Quite frankly Harmon is an idiot. And a patronising cow.

I am sorry to hear that JayneFlakes is being mistreated just because of some moronic neanderthal prejudices but that does not make positive discrimination right.

I have got to where I am by sheer effing hard work and I earn a decent salary. Why? Because I got what I asked for and believed I was worth it. Took me a long time to get to that point though and I think that part of the problem is women don't generally have the balls (excuse the pun) to ask for the cash they really want, hence the difference in salary. If a company (which lets face it is there to make money for the owners/shareholders) can get away with paying less than they should they will do, with male or female workers.

No amount of patronising 'lets help the poor little woman who can't think for herself' by our failure of a government will change that.

Now with her spouting this crap it will be harder for women to get anywhere because of the thoughts that will enter (a usually male) employers head as they will run along the lines of 'well if I employ her she may take me to court for any reason whatsoever, better employ the bloke, less hassle in the end and I can just get rid if he is no good'.

Stupid, stupid, pig faced bint.:smt013:smt076

I'm amazed at the weird ways of this country, they bleat on endlessly about discrimination and then send a form out with every job (no picture requested) asking what ethnicity you are, what religion, what sexuality, any disabilities, etc.

Is it just me, or does anybody else see the irony in this?

Maybe I am missing the point, but if I don't tell you what I am, you don't know and can only judge me on what I have written in the damn form???
If I get through that stage, it is fair that I have an interview. Once I have and interview, ask about my need for assistance with special needs if indeed I have any.

That is fair in my eyes. I am not bothered by people looking different, speaking differently (as long as I can understand them - heavily accented foreigners in call centres are just put there to make you hang up!) or being unable to walk, as long as they are able to help me by doing whatever they are employed to help me with - it defeats the object to guarantee someone one of limited interviews at the detriment to the company, where there are other better qualified applicants.
