I always do the same, leave finding bottles til the last minute!

I'm doing this as well, most of what I drink at home is homebrew! I use the 2 litre fizzy drinks bottles which I'm collecting at the moment for my current batch. It usually says leave it for 2 weeks but I'd say 3 or 4 is better, the longer I leave mine the better it seems to taste.

just make sure everything you use is sterile, i make sure everything the beer/wine is gonna have contact with has been sterilised with milton or something. that way you know its only whats meant to be growing in there is growing. This includes the bottles. ive started doing more wine now as its working out ~35p per bottle to make, including corks, and everything, and its tastes good.
