And thats why you shouldn't use proprietary formats, it ties you to specific vendors.

As for the answer you were actually looking for - haven't a clue - I avoid the evil that is Apple and their iGoods

put the songs you want on the disc in a playlist, then under one of the options like file / edit etc there is "burn playlist to disc"

does that work with locked tunes?

PirateBay FTW:D

And yes, it should work with purchased tunes.

How is it stealing?

How does it deprive the "owner" of the ability to use the tune?

Its Copying and copyright infringment, which is a completely different thing

you didn't buy the right to copy the tune

there are certain exceptions where copying is allowed eg public interest, fair dealing etc

Lets look at the Oxford Dictionary definition of the word Steal shall we?

isteal

• verb (past stole; past part. stolen) 1 take (something) without permission or legal right and without intending to return it. 2 give or take surreptitiously or without permission: I stole a look at my watch. 3 move somewhere quietly or surreptitiously. 4 (in various sports) gain (a point, advantage, etc.) unexpectedly or by exploiting the temporary distraction of an opponent.
• noun 1 informal a bargain. 2 chiefly N. Amer. an act of stealing.
— PHRASES steal a march on gain an advantage over by taking early action. steal the show attract the most attention and praise. steal someone’s thunder win praise or attention for oneself by pre-empting someone else’s attempt to impress.
— DERIVATIVES stealer noun.
— ORIGIN Old English.

So, to Steal something you have to take it without intent to return it? What have I physically taken, all I have done by copying a file is set a bunch of magnetic particles to have specific properties, that when read, are the same as the original file, however the original file is still in the possession of the owner.

Therefore nothing has been stolen.

So its not theft.

well done. i was using laymans terms so as not to be confusing. i am quite cabable of using the proper legal terminology but it would be pretty meaningless to most people reading it. the cdpa is not exactly a light right.

i'm not agreeing or disagreeing whether or not it is fair but it is the law.

Mate, get yourself an i-trip off ebay. About a tenner, and then you can listen to all your tunes in the car!

On the subject of d'loading, how about this one. I have about 200 lp's up in the loft. Can I download them as mp3's legally? Have I bought my little slice to the rights when buying the original lp or not?

Nope.

Fair use applies to copies you have made YOURSELF from your own original.

The UK doesnt actually have a fair use law, unlike the US, but I do believe we have the right to make a backup.

Anyway..... I-tunes (turn and spit) does have a CD burning function.

(It also knows how to decode pre-emphasis so I suppose it's not all bad. And apple lossless is - so I'll refrain from biaching)

EDIT: Just get one of those things that lets you play you pod through the car stereo - works for me.

OK under my definitions listening to something isn't going to do any harm. If I didn't downlaod songs I probably wouldn't buy them either, I'm not that musically inclined. Not stealing, I've cost noone any money. I'm not making any myself.

If I was to go out and hoof someone in the nuts, then take their wallet, that however, would be stealing. My gain to someone elses loss.

If you're into listening to pop "music" then who really cares? Are these "artists" going to notice 50p they haven't got to spend on cocaine?

Film downloading, it's not stealing, it's laziness, I download films when I can't be ar$ed to wait for them to be put on telly...

Anyway rant over... I don't like iBloat.exe either...

Cloning a card is absolutely fine... it's using that magnetic data to steal real money that's the issue..

That's just stupid - TV networks still pay to air the film. And yes - it is stealing. You just don't see the victim, as you do with the wallet stealing example.

Burning tunes in itunes is easy

Create playlist containing the songs you want.
Then go into the playlist and in the bottom right hand corner it should say burn playlist to disc.

You can change your preference in prefrences>sharing (I think it is) and changing the options to either MP£ or data disc.

As for copying etc. If they didint want you to do it, then why write that functionality into the software? I understand all the copyright, stealing aspect, but come on, wake up. its nothing new, it been going on since the 'Home taping is killing music' slogan of yesteryear. If they dont want you to copy stuff, then stop selling stuff to do it!

I copy the MP4A files onto cd, then re-import them into itunes as MP3, so that they can be used on the girlfriends MP3 player.

i'm not agreeing or disagreeing whether or not it is fair but it is the law.Fair enough, but you DO buy the right to copy the tune with in the boundries set by Apple. In the small print it states (And i paraphrase) that you can make 1 cd copy of the purchased tune, and it can be loaded on up to 5 ipods that are registered to that version of itunes. So ner ;)

I'll happily download movies and music as long as they demand daft amounts of money for them. I buy **** loads of films in Tesco that are £1- £4, as that seems like a fair price. Last time I was looking, new releases were £16! If anyone is stealing...
