Did anyone watch this last night.

Was an interesting reality type show I thought.

Couldnt beleive the penalties were so low for defauding the government though: 50k+ in fraud equals around 200hrs of community service... :smt017

£250 p/h isnt a bad rate of pay. Given you have to pay it back if you get caught - but whats stopping them from just bankrupting and clearing the debt. If you are a crook it's a no brainer... :smt085

Just caught the end of it.
Don't understand - what penalty do they get if they can't pay it back (Bankruptcy aside) as I saw the "give them 6 months to repay the £80K". What's the point of that? they either saved the money (unlikely) and can repay immediately or they spent it. How are they going to earn £160K p.a. after tax of spare money that they don't need to live off :smt102

With them its likely they will sell the assets - but whats stopping them selling it at a loss or for cash and then saying they cant pay it back....

What should happen is they should have all their assets seized. The government liquidates it all and they give back whatever balance is owed.

IIRC of course it would, Bankruptcy is whereby all your assets that can be sold are sold for you & distributed to your debtors in order. I'm sure govt debts like that would be pretty high up the order for being paid.
You can't be put in prison for non payment of debt unless it is willfull i.e. you can pay but choose not to (e.g. council tax protest).
In Bankruptcy you still have to repay your debtors as best you can from income for a year.

Didn't watch it, but got told about it. Thinking of doing it myself if that's all the penalties are........................ I'd be a lot better off moneywise & I wouldn't be grinding my ass to the ground & having any worries

My housemate was telling me about their cousin. She and her partner both cheat the system for everything they've got, and stack credit card bills as high as they can. When it comes to pay up time, they get the slate wiped clean and start over again. Apparentley their house is like a Currys superstore. Demoralising for us workers or what

I couldnt believe the family with the apparently 'disabled' child, he just looked naughty to me, I didnt catch what was actually wrong with him.

They had a MASSIVE house and a MASSIVE garden with every imaginable toy and adventure set possible......they clearly were not struggling one tiny bit and had a comfortable life.

She rung up the benefit office (who are now paying for a disabled (naughty) son to be kept in a boarding school) who kindly informed her for the last 7 years she had been missing out on £48 a week for her disabled (naughty) little boy. Although she had managed without it quite comfortably they still backdated it in full........to the tune of £18k  WTF

The whole system is very very wrong.

Edit: those people had very cool jobs.....I would love to find out how to apply.

G the kid you refer to was autistic so indeed disabled! The house was a council house (and I have a friend leaving in a similar size house from the council) and some come with such big gardens :)

Didn't see it.

My mates bro has to pay back 2.2 million or do an extra 9 years. As he currently has 2 life sentences plus a further 20 years for other offences (He was a very naughty boy). What is the point of paying back as there is no guarantee he will ever come out anyway.

As for comments about disable/autistic kids etc and boarding schools. My friends son has Asperger syndrome, many would think him a very naughty boy. He spent from age 11 - 18 in boarding school, - 21 on residential training programs and now lives in a flat all payed by his local authority.

Knowing the lad well. It was the best thing for him. It has taken 5 years to get him to communicate in a very basic way. Please do not knock anyone who looks normal but behaves differently unless of course you know how their brain is wired and how to rewire it.

Hmm - I dont know mate - Its a pretty hard life bringing up a disabled kid as a single mum. She wasnt playing the system - just getting what was owed.

Edit: those people had very cool jobs.....I would love to find out how to apply. It did. They should make it private for bounty hunters... paid by taking back a percentage of the defrauded money.

Makes some sense now  as I hadnt seen all of the programme I wasnt sure if was just something rediculous like attention deficiet disorder.

Still think a back payment of ?18k was unecessary as she clearly hadnt been struggling and the kid was going to be in paid for boarding school in the next 2 months.

I agree that we should support those in bad situations, but I work for a living and where's MY rent/mortgage free house with a garden?

She's a mum of 3 with a disabled kid that requires full time care. Couldnt work because of this so claims benefit to survive. My impression was she had no other option but what she was trying to do to raise her family.

I am sure you can choose to have that life if you tried hard enough.

Didnt watch the program so cannot comment further, but it sickens me the number of times I walk past the local council estate and see expensice cars in the carparks/drives and empty plasma TV boxes, not to mention the number of Sky dishes......

I agree - There was a couple that got busted. Owned 2 houses, 07 Audi, BMW X5 and were looking at purchasing a brand new detached house.... :smt071

Council was paying her mortgage on her flat, she was subletting it and taking another 500 pm cash. She was supposed to be single but was living with her partner in a new 3 bed detached house, both on single parent benefits. I am sure there was a host of other things they were into as well as they had some flash stuff as well.

Hmm. Makes me laugh. My mum brought 5 of us up and 3 of us have Torretts and my younger sister is Autistic as well. Mum got about ?11 per week for Lisa back then. World has gone mad.
