View Full Version : So I had an idea about energy...

How about, everyone has an exercise bike in their house, and the unemployed have to submit a certain number of hours on the bike before they can get their giro. The twist is, the bike is linked to the national grid. If people who are employed want to use the bike, they can either contribute to their own household electricity or get fuel tax cuts in line with their helping to produce alternative forms of energy. The bikes would have weight and biometric sensors installed so as to prevent energy fraud. The cost of installing a bike in every home would be fractional compared to what it would take to drill new supplies of oil, i.e., millions compared to billions. If say 10 million people generated enough electricity to run 5 lightbulbs for 10 hours a day, what a saving that would be, right? Plus it has the benefits of making people fitter.

i always wondered about the possibility of linking exercise bikes, cross trainers and other resistance based cardio equipment in gyms - into dyno/generator equipment to create power. "Eco-gyms" = no need to use external power for those big plasma screens with the nearly naked pretty people dancing round.
As for energy credits - what an idea :D I was reading about an article in new scientist (bought it by random in manchester when I had an hour to kill)...
"Miniaturisation of hydrogen storage
By Tom Wells
One of the biggest challenges facing the global response to climate change is getting people to equate their actions with an energy, and thereby carbon, cost. The miniaturisation of hydrogen storage and related fuel cell technology will usher in a full hydrogen economy and solve this. Once every home has a hydrogen tank, and everyone carries around a smaller version in their pockets, the joule can start to replace standard units of currency. Eventually employees will be paid and transactions made by transferring quantities of hydrogen either between hand held devices or, for larger amounts, between energy vaults. The idea of profit will be replaced by meeting the energy demand of your operations and employees. Suddenly solar panels are a licence to print money, conference calling makes more sense than that flight to America and we will be able to see all that money disappearing up the chimney!"
edit: just found the original article and it's part of a wider feature called "Visions of the future (http://www.newscientist.com/visionsofthefuture.ns)"...

I'm currently unemployed (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=112276).
I can say this in full knowledge that what you're going to see is nothing much more than a string of bleeps but writing it will help me no end.
**** off you ****ing elitist ****ing *******. I'm ****ed off with people thinking the unemployed are scum of the earth and I'm ****ed off with you and every other ****er thinking you're better than me. **** off.
You lot seriously think something's wrong if the unemployed aren't crawling around in rags and grovelling at your supreme being. Well I'm not bowing down, you're not better than me so please, kindly, **** the **** off.

Whilst I'm sure you're a lovely chap, I don't really feel that your frustration at being unemployed warrants an unprovoked, undirected rant on this level. I certainly don't look down on anyone who is unemployed, especially having followed your link and reading your personal circumstances, which obviously warrant you not having a job. It's unfair that you don't get any incapacity benefit especially having been very ill for a very long time - and having to exhaust your savings in the process.
Please point out where I was being elitist, and I will happily back down. I am currently a student working my way through university (21 hours a week, pays the rent and for the bike) and if a scheme like this was introduced I would be more than happy to have to contribute in order to continue my student loan payments.
Perhaps the scheme would work better if there was a cooling period, such as if you were unemployed for a fortnight you would have to do 5 hours a week to claim, 10 hours for a month, and so on up to maybe a full 35 hour week for those who remained unemployed for a year.
If you're unemployed due to personal circumstances making it difficult for you to have a job at the current time, ill health or other valid reason, then the scheme would obviously compensate for this.

Think of the energy and resource it'd take to build, transport, safely wire up, monitor and maintain these bikes ... I wonder how long/how much peddling it'd take to 'zero' that cost (if ever), let alone start value add!! ;)
I think the unemployed should be sent out to do something for 8hrs a day for their pay cheque!! ... you know like pick up litter, clean the streets, caring for old people ... that sort of thing ... basically any job that means it'd be preferable to get off your behind and get a 'proper' job over having to do for your dole money as you are having to work for that anyway ...
If the person can't 'get about' then there must be some telephone/desk jobs they can do!
Basically at that point you have 2 choices ... work (job or dole job) or perish!! 8)

and people in jail could be made to do it 3-5 hours a twice a day......... this may also help with re-offeneders
Or you could take all of the unemployed people, and recycle them to feed starving children in Africa.
Could make breakfast bars called 'dole munchies' or something.

lol at all the responses. I know this would never happen but I thought it was quite funny in my head. Apologies to anyone who took this perhaps a little too seriously, just trying to open up some friendly discussion.
And now for my next trick, what do people think of parenting tests? Like passing a test when you come into the country, you should have to take a parenting test before you have kids.

what does everyone think about making disabled people wear a red hat so that we don't accidentally make any jokes about them only to realise they do in fact have some kind of physical impairment? My mate made a joke about a guy being drunk, but it turned out he was a stroke patient. I can honestly say a red hat would have helped to avoid this situation :)

I think it would be better if they had to not leave their homes altogether just in case. I mean, many other people wear red hats. I think maybe a tattoo saying disabled across the forehead might suffice, but they should probably stay at home anyway.
I can't see any reasons why this is not a fantastic idea.

I think there should be some kind of licence required to have children, you have to be checked out if you get a dog from a rescue centre but no checks to have children. Very hard to enforce though..

i was being ironic/sarcastic... bit like on peepshow when mark shouts at the guy for riding in the lift to the first floor, then the guy limps out. Mark does the monologue "Sh!t, didn't realise he had a limp... they should make people like that wear an armband or something... oh. yeah. good idea adolf"
I haven't said anything about unemployment because I know it's not an easy life, for most people it's the sh!tty end of the stick (like my missus who worked for the nhs for 3 years, then when she changed job and it went wrong, she was entitled to nothing during in her unemployment.
Dicky ticker, do you have any computer design skills like corel draw or illustrator and/or photoshop?

So this is supposed to be funny---mocking or suggesting that certain people who genuinely through no fault of their own are scroungers,I'm sorry but I am one of these people and I take offence at the innuendos
I worked for 40+years paid into the system, employed up to ten people and paid their employers contributions plus company and personal tax to benefit students with grants
etc. and now due to sickness I am claiming back from the system
Through misplaced conceptions I saved for my later years and the benefits I receive plus personal pension mean I am still paying taxes
Look at it another way,you pay insurance but when you have an accident you expect to be able to claim but don't expect to be mocked or branded a good for nothing lazy scrounger, you will fight for every penny due to you from the system
Perhaps the avtar will give you a clue

I'm guessing by the username dicky ticker means that you have a bad heart. And that really sucks, because paying taxes all your life is something that you should be rewarded for. Your NI contributions and taxes when you were working and an employer yourself help pay for my maintenance grant to fund me through university as I am from a low income family (my mum works as a learning mentor, basically sorting out the exact same people i'm targeting with this idea- she gets about 11K a year for what equates to saving lives and giving people a chance).
I am grateful for this, and I'm sure you probably won't be pleased with that fact. However, the wrong people are undervalued in this country, and I would include people like you and MiniMatt in this; having worked and provided for other people (like you said, you were an employer, creating jobs), you deserve to live more that comfortably now that your circumstances have changed.
As it stands, my university charges £3175 a year for tuition, which equates to approximately £50+ an hour for tuition. The university doesn't need this ridiculous amount, I don't get subsidised prices from them or masses of source materials- our library charges 50p an hour for late books FFS! This is an example of priorities being wrong. My uni is top ten in the country for my subject (Kent) but I don't feel that I get what should be stellar education from them. I'm writing this as an example of wasting money that could be spent keeping you in better health and living more comfortably.
I currently work my way through uni and do end up paying taxes, despite being a full time student. I find this unfair; why charge me taxes then give it straight back to me in the form of student loan? Seems like a bureaucratic waste of time, money and resources.
Moving back to the scheme that I proposed, it was in no way to poke fun at those who have a genuine reason to be unemployed- it's for people on jobseekers allowance. From what you've said, you don't appear to fit into this category, therefore, were you to do hours on the bike (and you wouldn't be expected to due to your medical condition), you would receive tax/fuel cuts.
Hope this clears things up a little.
