On your desktop go into
on Internet Explorer, Tools, then internet options, click connection, then LAN settings and then make sure that the "automatically detect settings" check box is ticked.
Try that first see what that does or what that is set to.
What type of wireless modem is it? What OSes are you using? Can the two computers see each other on the network (assuming the modem also acts as a router, which some do)? You say that before it worked intermittently - has anything changed recently?

Quiff, on your desktop can you do this for me :
Click on start, then click run, type in CMD and press return
You should get a black box with white text come up, in that black box type in ipconfig and hit return.
It should come back with something like
192.168.0.1 can you tell me what that number is ? and then I'll tell you what to try next.
Diagnostically, then, internet connection is working, modem is working, wireless card in PC is working, therefore must be settings. Get on what fizzwheel said :)

when i do that on my laptop it same numbers for ip but .65 not .64 at th end.
Could always try running the network setup wizard to try to remedy the settings problem - start / programs / accessories / communications / network setup wizard
when i do that on my laptop it same numbers for ip but .65 not .64 at th end.
That's normal - means they've been assigned consecutive IP addresses :)

Righto OK so you are getting an IP addres so that means your desktop is talking to the wireless router OK.
on that same screen should be another one of those daft numbers. next to it it will say "Default Gateway" type in this
ping x.x.x.x ( substitute x.x.x.x for the number next to default gateway ) and then hit return.
let me know what that does this should confirm whether your desktop is talking to the router OK.

Not a problem - if someone's going to call you to talk you through it it'll be a lot faster :) It's difficult to go through diagnostics through forum messages when it can take minutes to go through something that'll take seconds to do over the phone ;)

I once had a problem with my desktop all of a sudden deciding to fall out with the router. I tried everything, adjusting all the settings, removing the drivers etc. It was doing my nut because the wireless was fine so when I fell out with the desktop I turned the power switch off at the back (PSU) for a period of time. Low and behold when I come back it was all working again.
