Is it worth running one of those registry cleaners and if yes - which one
Cheers

Download HijackThis, run a scan and save a log-file, and copy/paste the content of the log here, and we'll see what you need to get rid of :D

Also CC cleaner is a good free software but if you sue the registry cleaner make sure you agree to the prompt that says "back up registry?" cos it only takes a second and can save you a lot of grief if you make a boo-bo.

Possibly. But personally think that you'll have more luck with downloading and installing something like Adaware
Sounds like you have an infestation of spyware to me.

It's only gone slow really since I joined BT Broardband and got a load of "essential" stuff on the set up disc. So either they have sent me a load of spywear or I just haven't worked our yet what to turn off
Whats Adaware do?

Uninstall all the crap BT sent you, run adaware and do a defrag, maybe?

Correct!
Also, try Super Anti Spyware!
Sounds cheesy, but i found it recently and it REALLY works!!
(always helps to run 2 or more progs to be sure. Adawre, SAS, and Spybot are good).
DONT use a security suite, they are pants. A decent anti-virys and regular router with a firewall built in will protect you enough (IMHO).

Back when I last had a PC (converted to mac about 5 years ago) I used AVG free, no wireless encryption (if someone joins the network you can play with their computer and teach them a lesson), the router had a firewall built in and run adaware maybe every other week or so. Also used firefox or similar and only downloaded through bittorrent, not through any kazaa etc type software.

Or.. you could get a version of OSX (10.5) and install that on your PC, make a windows partition and mainly use the mac one.
Oh you mac users think you're so good! ;)

I just installed 10.5 on my system and it's beautiful. If I want, I can run windows too, but i tend to do it through parallel desktops to run planescape torment.

I run this from time to time to check what is loading when the PC boots and then stop all programs that it is not really necessary for the PC to load when it starts
