He actually works for North Star Shipping on the Emergency Standby and Rapid Response vessels. He loves it and even starting at the bottom as an apprentice I think the wages were good for someone so young.

I think it was taken from the rig when they went to collect the papers. Once a week they get papers and dvd`s from the rig... i think on that particular day the sea was too rough to get close enough.

Dunno about that, but this one looks like he is initiating a wave-wheel!

All that for a mail run.... Deadliest catch has got nothing on that sea.

I luv water but draw the line at that lol. The North Sea is apparantly one of the roughest seas in the world and apart from one afternoon on his first voyage he`s never had any sea sickness and the rougher the sea the better he likes it!! You should see some of the video`s, gives you sea sickness just watching them!

In conditions like that, it's safe to say it must be a bit hard not to 'sprinkle whilst you tinkle' ...

Chris enrolled on a City and Guilds course in Nautical something or other. It was a one years course and at the end of it they arranged an apprenticeship with http://www.craig-group.com/North_Star_Shipping/ He has just finished his 2 year apprenticeship as a deckhand (month on/month off basis) and when he goes back at the end of this month he`ll be starting coxswain training.
There are basic seagoing qualifications you`d need and if you don`t fancy going to college you can pay and do the courses yourself. Will find out what they are.
Best of luck

But who would want that lifestyle??? ... not the rough sees, but I'm sorry, but being cooped up on a boat with lots of salty seamen for weeks/months on end isn't rally my bag!! :D

Brilliant, thanks Claire, :)
Suppose that industry isn't going down the drain, there will always be rigs / ships I guess!

Alot of people dont mind it.......the money is rather impressive and the people your on shift with become like an extended family.
My uncle was a Director at BP Grangemouth and now works in the Northsea in complete charge of one of Talismans biggest rigs 3 weeks on 3 weeks off, loves every minute of it, stupidly well off as well.
Still cant get on the rigs myself though :(

Indeed, each to their own, but to me, physically not being able to get away from people/the boat/surroundings if I so chose would be hell on earth!! :eye:
you couldn't give me enough money to cage me in a can for weeks on end like that!! ;)

Even if the sea were calm, it'd be a bit chilly!! ;)
Besides, 30seconds in the sea and you are back on the poxy boat with all them salty semen again!! ;) ... there is no true escape, its a 24/7 occupation!! all I can say is :smt098 to that!! :smt081

Have just spoken to my son and he reckons the company are desperate for staff of all ranks. He says it would be worth emailing or ringing them as they might be so desperate that they`d put you thru the relevant training courses.
PS: obv don`t tell them that you know they`re quite desperate! :D
