Had one (well access to one (two actually, a racebike and a raodbike)) ... cool in their day, but they are a bit long in the tooth now ...
have you ridden a supermoto?;)
Yes ...
What you fancying doing then mate? Cars? Karts?
had/got cars ... got karts ... more interested in them than bikes at the mo ... and that's a sad state of affairs being more interested in 4 wheels isn't it :(
I've even tried adorning myself with a new lid an leathers ... didn't work ...
Started looking at buying a new filly (Duke 1098 ) ... but thought how it was a bit of a waste as I don't really ride the bike/s I have got at the mo ...

Maybe it's just job stress and the fact that you're basically quicker than anyone else. You could use your downtime from work to enter a few races?

Blue, buy a classic bike, something that isnt racey or whatever, discover riding for the pleasure of riding, not being fast or whatever

I've done racing ... no real interest in racing any more (been there done that, got the t-shirt and scars) ... but you are right, I don't even find trackdays that much fun any more ... I am more interested in getting some footage than I am the riding itself ..
Why is your interest dwindling? Any reason?
Maria
Dunno really, just since leaving my old job, I have no cause to ride my roadbike any more (I used to commute on it every day - and that was the only thing I used it for) so get no daily exposure ... its easy to forget about when it isn't in your face every day ...
Blue, buy a classic bike, something that isnt racey or whatever, discover riding for the pleasure of riding, not being fast or whatever
I've had loads of classic bikes in the past (all jap - and I used to ride the t1ts off them, so its not like I wouldn't another!! - in fact the carper the bike the harder I ride it!! :D) ... bit of an interest in getting a brit-bike, but I can't see myself ever riding it much after the initial play ... so again it just seems a bit of a waste/liability ... same as a 1098 ...

na. Oh and it can't be any more expensive than supersport was!! :D
I've felt the same since mine has been in bits, but I'm keener now. My gf as just got a set of leathers, im making some progress with the bike so im getting there again.
Dont know what you should do mate, hope your fire gets lit again, so to speak!

This happened to me a while ago. I lost interest in it, busy at work, stress of organising the AR I just lost the will to ride it.
The AR rekindled my love for riding again. I spent most of the day TEC and I really enjoyed just stopping for a few minutes and then riding along all by myself at the back and nailing it through some of my favourite sequence of roads and riding along by myself really. Its weird I cant explain it.
Maybe take a break from it blue and then come back to it when you feel ready to. No poin tputting pressure on yourself to do something if you're not enjoying it anymore.

Where I am not really using it, I have been thinking about selling my roadbike ... but I can't bring myself to do it (yet) ...
Now I don't do any miles on it, thought about buying some sports pads and some sticky rubber for it, basically convert it into a leisure bike ... but the chepo pads* and miss-match tyres are good enough for frolicking really ...
*might change them actually, I think they are almost bordering on dangerous when the speed builds up and you need some drastic/rapid braking, they are so 'wooden' and lacking in outright power!!

Indeed, was thinking of taking a break ... but my fear is I may never return ...
Bearing in mind I've been into/riding bikes for over 2 decades (~2/3 my life), that's a strange thought ... :shaking:

I have ridden a supermoto - yes - have I tired supermotoing (SM track) - no ... it doesn't really wave my flag ...
I like offroad/mx and I like road/track ... a SM is neither one nor t-other in my mind!! ...
its a bit like I have no interest in trikes ... its not a car or a bike ... you don't get the full benefit of either and you get saddled with the worst points of both ... so what's the point!?!? ;)

:smt102 Take a break my friend.
I used to be a climbing instructor, I worked in a climbing wall, I taught climbing every day and on my day off I went climbing. I did that for five years, Christmas was spent on mountains, Summer was spent on mountains, every day I lived an breathed climbing, until I burned out.
I just gave it up. I got fed up with it so I stopped for a while. I told my friends I had stopped climbing, I told every one I had stopped climbing.
I was out climbing two weeks later and I still go out every now and again, but I will never be at that level again. :-dd :smt018
I still get bored quite quickly though at the crag, it has to feel right or I get nothing from it. So now I only climb when I am really in the mood.

....climbing stuff...
See climbing is one of my hobbies too ... not done it for ages and you simply talking about it has got me itchy to get out ... (to be fair my main climbing buddy and I were talking about it just this w/e too, so quite a coincidence ;)).
I do outdoor climbing (mostly Portland) ... having been outdoors now, I no longer have any interest in indoor climbing. I'd rather not climb than climb indoors!
I like the experience/getting away/extreme of it all outdoors, and the 'random' element (indoor climbs are to prescribed) ... I am not that bothered about being the worlds best climber, as long as I can get up a few climbs I am happy (I've never successfully lead anything other than a 5B for instance).
EDIT: Here do you and your lesbo friend want to go to Portland the next time I/we go?? 8) ... that'd potentially spice things up somewhat my end!! :D

give it up for abit .... then one day ull get bored and go riding .. hopefuly it would bring back your love of biking!
Sounds like you need a holiday, how about a biking holiday. Planning it, preparing the bike sorting a route what to see/what not too. Go somewhere on the bike with a purpose but enjoy it at the same time. Just a thought!! :-)

Now there is an offer I almost can't refuse, except I have done Portland nearly ten years ago. I fell off of an evil 6c and ripped my arms pumping on 6b's. I think that Pete Oxley had just moved over to his amazing 10mm stainless staples, having had them examined by the BMC for possible popping. For me though, Sport climbing is not where it is at. It makes me feel like you do about your bikes.
I prefer a big trad crag, get the gear out and lead my way up a nice climb. My first ever outdoor lead on placed gear was Suspension Bridge Arête, in Avon Gorge. HVS 5a. My favourite places are Baggy Point in North Devon, Stanage in the Peak and Tramadog in North Wales. I have an old foe by Joe Brown and Don Whillans to climb at Tremadog, the Fang on Bulche i Moche (please forgive my welsh spelling), HVS 5b. I once climbed the first Pitch, but the boy who wanted to climb with me could not get off of the floor.
Give me a classic mountain route over any sport crag every time.
PS, if you can get to Avon, I can teach you to lead with Leader Placed Protection on twins. :geek:
Feel free to PM me if you are interested and we can discuss it

I'd agree there. It makes biking interesting again
I hate bikes every now and then. Usually its the top of my agenda. Usually i fall out and get frustrated with bikes when they don't work....like now, spending a fortune on her and she still refuses to play ball....makes you want to take a large hammer to it!!
And the weather makes you depressed. Wha you need is a good sunny spell and all will ba at one with bike again!!
I'm not very satisified with mine at the mo. Ok the black Sv works and does its job....but I don't want to ride that one....I want the other...can someone wave a magic wand in this direction please:smt100
Maybe you should take up lawnmowers?

I've not been out much. After I dropped the bike a month ago I haven't used it as was getting fairing reprayed etc and hadn't had time to pick it up. Haven't missed having th bike at all. I wouldn't worry about it, my interests change about, I know I'll fancy a track day again soon.
Go to Nurburgring on a training day, it will kick start the interest again

Ok, I am not after new hobbies or things to fill my time (have plenty of them already ;)), so not looking for alternatives, just its a bit sad I am loosing interest completely in bikes (after all this time).
I went on that .org French trip/rideout about 6 weeks ago ... although were it was all done in 1 day, it was really tiring (the Pompy to euro tunnel and back bit was the killer!!) it was still a great day out :) ... I'd go again, but then I'd do the same thing if it were in a car to be honest ... it was the scenery/company/unity that was the important thing, not the fact I was on a bike ...
Ok, so like relationships, its prolly better to just step back for a bit rather than force the issue ... the latter will only end in resentment!! ... so that is it ... bikes and me are official 'on a break'!! :D
Jayneflakes - although I'd like to have a go at trad climbing, I still have a lot of fun sport climbing, I don't feel I have done enough sport climbing to need to take the next level yet. If you came to Portaland, you can always 'trad' a bit next to my sport climb and we could race each other up*!! :)
*To stand a chance, I'll have to make sure your climb is significantly harder by the sounds as you are much more experienced climber than I ;)
It seems to me you just talk about the bike itself, not at all about the social side which to some people is more important. Rallies, meeting new people, going to bike shows things like that. I've come to the conclusion that ride-outs are fine and ok but I'd rather ride my bike to go and see bikerfriends.
The thing I like about ride-outs is getting to know the people (better) so we always go to a pub for a chat afterwards. Also I like small groups not big groups/forums where the people that turn up change all the time. Rather like to get to know a small group of people. You could join groups, clubs, set one up yourself. I don't know about your personal situation but a gf who is a biker could make a difference. ;)

I'd get out in Europe and ride. You are probably bored with your same roads. Discover Italy, Switzerland, Croatia, on your bike. Amazing roads, great food, great weather. Thats what my perfect life would be, if only I didn't have to keep earning a living.
Or build your own bike. I don;t mean rebuild an sv, I mean design one from scratch. That is my mate's ultimate goal. You woul dhave to use an engine already built probably, but everything else would be up to your imagination.
Last but not least, if you don't like bikes, then give them up! Why do you care about not loving bikes if you don;t love them anymore?? I mean, it solves itself! You don't love an exgirlfriend who you dumped cos you didn't like her.

Like after being in a long term marriage/relationship, you become institutionalised ... my bike relationship is >20yrs old ... regardless if it seems the love is gone ... it's a bit strange to think it might finally be over ...
I think just a time-out might be on the cards ... distance makes the heart grow fonder and all that ...
Someone mentioned it previously but racing classics bikes would be interesting.
Race with the classic racing motorcycle club.....some bloody good competition there for you....Lee Gourley etc who wins pretty much every class.
If its the challenge you miss and having someone similar to battle against, you would have a good time there.
Failing that sadly you seems pretty sure your fed up of it....most options have been raised, so take a break from it.

Right well if your on the way out can i have all your track stuff?
If you lose interest you lose interest. You can't force yourself to like something more, and you can't force yourself to become more motivated to stick at something your heart really isn't in.
Just stop doing it until you want to do it again, and if you never do then it will be because you've found something you'd rather do instead, which would be a good thing.
I think it's particularly important to stop motorcycling if your heart's not in it, there are safer pastimes to feel dissatisfied by.

The break away will no doubt do you some good, if you never come back to it, you have all of those amazing memories of riding slowly through heavy traffic, trying not to get knocked off by chav scum in "sorted" Novas who want to race.
As for climbing, You could say that I am quite experienced, I have climbed in quite a few places around Europe and I have done both Rock and Ice. Ice was amazing, but scary. I can't wait until I am fit enough to hit Ice again.
I was in hospital in 2006 and I am still walking with a stick every now and again, so should we race up a Portland crag, even if You were on a 6b+ Sport and I was climbing a V-Diff trad, I am sure that you would win.
However, these days I only climb because I enjoy it. I like a route that is both aesthetically pleasing and has delicate dancing moves on it. I enjoy the feeling of moving over rock, using micro crimps lost its joy when I popped my finger tendons. :-({|=
Mind you, you should see my gear wrack, I have a set of Wild Country Friends and some wicked micro stoppers... Just to make you feel safe when climbing on E numbers! I think I spent more on my climbing kit than I did on my SV... Oh the shame

...
I'm a brute force and ignorance man myself ... if I can get a good hold and haul my sorry behind up, its all good ... doing some of the more technical moves - don't think I am flexible enough!!
The thing I like about sport climbs is that once you clip-in on your way up, you know you are safe (ok, so the permanent bolt could come out, but it is unlikely) and can take a breather ... its a great rush, being near the next clip-in point, hanging on with one hand desperately trying to clip in before you slip/fade ... and then the relief when you have clipped in and you know you are ok ... its quite a rush ... especially as you have pulled a fair bit more through just before you clip, so you know the fall is even further!! ... if I was to 'trad' then I couldn't get the same level of comfort that I am 'safe' ... i.e. if I didn't place the equipment correctly then it isn;t going to do anything! .... I think you have to be very confident that you are unlikely to fall to do trad ... personally I get the buzz through doing climbs that are slightly above my level and as I said, the relief when you clip in!! :) ... If I KNEW I could make it with minimal/negligible chance of a fall, it'd not be as much fun ...
Screw bikes, I wanna go climbing!! :)

Ah I know that feeling so well.
I was climbing a 6C+ in Sardinia about four years ago and I got stuck below the last clip. The climb had been consistent 6C up to that point, but the final move was a horror. In the end I just fell off and hung on the rope for a bit.
That feeling of knowing that you are going to deck out if your gear pops trad climbing gets me going too though. Mind you, have you tried any hard routes solo yet? I used to climb a lot of stuff Solo, up to about E2 comfortably. However I messed up one day and nearly fell 70 feet after I dynoed for a hold on an evil E3 6a in the gorge, but missed. Luckily I only fell five feet before scrabbling for a hold on another climb next to mine.
I was a climbing instructor at the time and I had a reputation for being unhinged. Sadly these days, after the amount of damage I have done to my body in the name of sport, I have to take it a little more carefully. Also if I fall off and die, Carol will kill me!
Oh boy, I so desperately want to go climbing... I am sat at home, half an hours walk from my nearest crag and I have no one to climb with. I hate being poor, I can feel Stanage calling to my very bones... :smt100
It's quite obvious the whole topic was raised so that he can take the opportunity to find a counter to every single suggestion made. This is what he does. I have only ever done deep-water solo, or bouldering ... I like a buzz, I am not insane!!
Again to do soloing to any height (that isn't above deep water) you must be pretty confident in your abilities, else it is just playing with suicide isn't it!?!? ;) Its also nice to sometimes take a rest on the rope ... if you are soloing then you can't do this ... it must be nice to climb without the need for all the paraphernalia mind - I like that when I deep water!! 8) ... but like I said, I like doing climbs I might not be able to do ... I am adventurous, not stupid ... I am only going to do that if I have some safety equipment to hopefully give me a lifeline if it goes pear shaped ;) ... you can still hurt yourself pretty bad bashing into the rock on the way down, but its avoiding the sudden stop at the end that is important ;)

Ahh, that was why I had to give up solo climbing in the end. I realised that I had burned out my fear gland and things were getting stupid, I knew that if I continued I was going to be another note in the books of cliff rescue next to the remarks about the fish slice being needed again.
I agree, nothing more fun than pushing hard on a sport route, when you want to do hard stuff.
What I like about Mountain routes is that you can be pushing up for hours, but the actual route will be quite varied with the occasional hard bit to get the legs going like Elvis.
For me Sport routes link me back to my past and I would rather leave most of that buried, a death wish is a really stupid thing to have. Looking back, I am horrified at some of the stupid stunts I pulled, climbing with an Instructor I trained, while both of us were so drunk, we could barely stand. How we survived I just do not know. Falling of of E numbers while solo, climbing after attending an all night party and turning up to teach a lesson on hard advanced skills reeking of beer and other girls maybe did not look so good!
When you are ready though, feel free to pop over for a spot of trad practice. I have taught so many people to lead on gear, I am almost able to just float up next to them.
Then there is Dry Tooling, now that is silly fun and you really need a top rope for that! :smt100

If you don't mind lending me/us some of your trad gear (the placements, obviously got ropes and harness's etc), I might just take you up on that! :) ... how far 'west' are you???

At the moment I climb in Bristol, in Avon Gorge usually. I have climbed at Swanage though which is lovely, but due to losing my job I have no cash for travel at the mo. Based in Weston Super Mare currently which is really nice. Even bumped into a few Orgers here! :D
My gear was purchased because I was a free lance Instructor, so it was with the intention of using it to teach with. These days I teach my Stepson and his friends.
I have enough kit that I can teach two students how to lead on a full mountain wrack with harnesses and even boots (but only in my size!). However I am lacking helmets these days.
Would gladly teach you and your climbing buddy to lead climb if you both needed it. Just as long as you gave me a belay on one after!

It's quite obvious the whole topic was raised so that he can take the opportunity to find a counter to every single suggestion made. This is what he does. No real meaning, no real reasoning, just an opportunity to counter for the sake of it and for the sole pleasure of himself. Just like 90% of all his posts.
Nothing new there then.
Feel the love! :)
BUT, he's right, you haven't even bothered commenting on my first two extremely good suggestions...

I spent 10 years from my late teens where I totally loved motorbikes.
But life moved on - sold me last FZR thou' around 92/93 and drank the money in Oz
About 7 years ago I bought a Scooter! Simply for the commute - "back in the day" I would never have been seen dead on one! (but they are sooooooo practical!).......I bought the SV back in March this year, not quite on impulse - but more as something to do / buy.....and although my old enthusiasm is not there I do enjoy having a "proper" bike again.
I guess what I am saying is "buy a Scooter" :smt045.......or Life moves on, and that's just how it is. and how it's meant to be.

I change my mind pretty often anyhow ... so this time next week I'll prolly have bought a Harley!!! :D

It sprang from a desperate need to go climbing, after talking to you about how good climbing was.
It is not much a trip though, it is just a day out in the Avon Gorge with one of my old friends whom I used to climb with when I lived in Swindon.
Ahhh, the feel of Avon Limestone under my fingers, I just really hope that she can make it.
So fingers crossed. I so badly need to go climbing... :smt023

Ah that be Suspension Bridge Buttress, http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1164/1343081170_caae3f998c.jpg?v=0
with the fantastic route Suspension Bridge arête just visible on the corner there.
There are quite a few excellent routes on this crag, all HVS upwards and I have climbed quite a few of them.
Check this article (http://www.planetfear.com/article_detail.asp?a_id=19) for sake of interest, although it is a little out of date.
I will be climbing in either Main area or Sea Walls given the chance, can't wait, still not heard if my day out is on yet...:smt087

Exactly, I don't think you made any pretense about it being a thread about you, when it was written by you about you, asking people's opinions, even if those opinions just convince you to quit for a while.
As far as I can tell, I've read most threads since I joined last sept/oct, and Blue has been nothing but helpful to me, don't really see the problem! Sorry to stick my oar in but hey, it's a public forum.
Especially when it comes to fixing bikes/general help with SV's or useful and knowledgable opinions, like the Nadine thread with the busted electrics, I think everyone enjoyed reading that.

No don't tempt fate !! I love ya Blue :grouphug: if ya give up bikes don't give up the org!
On the "off" note - I agree, my love of bikes has come since I have not been able to ride, and I have met so many more org'ers since I have been busted than before. Work that out.
Sometimes you can have too much of a good things and you don't appreciate it until it's not there !

My love of mountainbiking overtook my love of motorcycling in 2006 and I sold my beloved SP-1 ( I kinda needed to, also, but that's a tale for another day). I was at the stage where I'd meet up up with a few buddies to go out on the 'big' bikes, but my mind would be all over the shop, spotting new trails and searching the hills and surrounding scenery for potential places to go moutainbiking. This led to me losing interest in motorbiking. Also, once I'd gotten bored with getting my knee down at every roundabout, there was really no inspiration to go out at all. It was at this point that I realised that going out half-cocked on a SP-1 was really not a very clever thing to do as the beasts require total focus at all times, just to avoid getting spat off. That was the final straw - my mate went racing 600s and I sold my VTR and resumed my neglected fitness-chasing and mountainbike racing. I remember clearly swallowing back the horrible lump in my throat as the dealer wheeled my bike onto his trailer and sped off. The roll of cash in my pocket did nothing to dispel the 'OhmyGodWHAThave Idone!!?' wave of panic that followed.
I've been away, done the other things I needed to do and now I'm back all loved up with my SV. The saying "You have to go away, first, to come back" is very relevent to me and I feel better for it. My tuppenceworth is simply: if your enthusiasm is fading, don't sweat it, just do whatever you have to because nothing really changes.
2 years down the line and MCN is still a sensationalist piece of toilet paper, tyres still wear out like they're made of putty, Hondas still hold their value and your true friends are still your friends.
In short - nothing really matters except your own happiness.

One thing I have noticed after some time away from biking is that no-one nods anymore. When I passed my test 10 years ago my neck would be sore with all the nodding by the time I got home! Today, I saw more than a dozen bikes during my commute and not one single rider waved or nodded.
I realise this may be old news, but it surprised me today.

Is that you nodding at them and them not nodding back, or you waiting for them to nod?
