Just back:( from best part of a week in France:D:D:D

While there we saw a new GSX-F650 parked up outside a Leclerc hypermarket. Out came the rider and his female passenger. Wifey said to me 'now if you had a bike with a bigger passenger seat, I'd get on it too'.

Well after years of bike hatred, this came as a bolt out of the blue. There were 2 witnesses to this too, daughter Sophie and niece Emily, so I wasn't just hearing things. If she had told me a few months back then I wouldn't have bought the 675, it's simply not suitable for 2 up riding. I'd love to take her on the back. So what do I do... sell up and find something more suitable, ignore it as a flash in the pan, or what?

I'd make sure she defo wants to do it before you switch bikes. Borrow a mate's pan/bandit 1250 or whatever and take her out on the back of that. Only once you are sure she likes it (and she has shown enough willing by buying her own kit and lid) would I consider swapping to a more pillion-friendly bike. A lot of people like the idea of going pillion, but the reality of having to pack extremely lightly/getting rained on/outtright fear when they actually do it means they aren't up for it in reality.

It'd be gutting to chop your bike in and find she fell into this group.

Tell her that pillion is no place for a right minded intellegent woman such as herself...

... then book her in to do her CBT.

Ignore it Ed, the things they say when they are in holiday mood.

It is like their wedding vows, love honour and do as told. they soon forget them too

Before I bought the ST, I was looking at things like the Speed Triple or Tuono. I then found that my other half liked coming out with me, so that ruled out anything without decent pillion comfort. I ended up looking for what I could find with a good balance between 2 up capabilities and fun for a blast solo, and to date have been more than happy with the outcome.

Sadly not an option for me; medical reasons mean no licence. :(

Alternatively why not see about hiring a bike of a weekend or something and borrow her some kit. Give it a few days out riding and see if she really likes it.

once you start down that route it is a dark and dangerous path....

hold dear the feeling of being able to bugger off on your own without worrying about a passenger...

i got lucky in a way. the missus loves bikes. bad bit is that you cant get her off the stupid thing! GREAT bit - she is taking her DAS in week :)

I'd be inclined to ignore it too ED, everytime we go on holiday my Mrs spends the next month planning our move abroard or to Devon or somewhere, it soon passes.

Could you seriously trade your bike for a GSXF650, just for the occasional pillion ride?

Grinch

Didn't you have a hornet before? They have big seats and was anything said then?

Shellywoozle
25-07-08, 01:42 PM
Just ask her outright if she was serious, if she wants to go pillion then would it be a one of or something long lasting. If she ticks all the boxes go shopping :)

Take her too, she will love it !

krhall
25-07-08, 01:43 PM
just remember one thing, that generally speaking a bike is a bit of a guilty pleasure, something that the kids and the missus can't break or sod up like they do the car!

Might be time to learn a Jedi mind trick.

"You don't want me to swap my 675 for a GSXF. That's not the bike you're looking for. Move along."

Purchase a 2nd bike. A cheaper one, that caters a pillion comfortably, and can take luggage (road trips!).

She will enjoy it, you will ejoy taking her out, but you will also enjoy NOT taking her out on your other toy, the one just for you. The 675.

Thats my plan, another bike just for me, 1 seat unit, no passangers, but until the other half does her test, she can comfortably sit on the back of the bandit.

Quedos
25-07-08, 02:04 PM
Get her on the back of mates and either scare the living daylights out of her so you can keep ur 675 or
get her on the back and show her whats she's missing tell her its better being in control and she should try the CBT etc

You'll never then have the problems or 'er indoors won't let you out on your bike (though you may no be able to get out on your own too much but you always have riding buddie)

My girlfriend came on the SV now and then, when I was looking for a new bike she had some of the say in what I got and found the daytona way to high..........she still hasnt come on my new bike

So go figure.

Blimey Grinch, you have a good memory. Yes, I did have a Hornet.

I don't know anyone with a Pan etc to borrow but I'll investigate hiring something I think. I can't work out if she's serious, it was such a complete U turn from a founder member of the Ban Bikes Brigade:confused:

from a female perspective - i would take what she says with a huge pinch of salt. A complete reversal in females on this subject is rare.

Try your local honda dealer talk to them nice and they seem to let them out for approx half days - well ours offered that
but stick on the back of something that you want to ride to. Don't forget about yersel in this.

That's not a bad idea, just go for a test ride on something else. I did a solo ride for an hour then an hour with the gf on the back as a test ride before I bought my bike.

That's probably the best route to go. Don't sell the 675 on a wifey whim.

I see that numbers is plugging his ST2. I used to own one and they're good bikes for two-up touring and you can put loud cans on them for that big v-twin sound :D

My best mate had one. Must say, for a touring bike it is the most uncomfortable machine I have been on.He used to have an SV650 and after that an FMX650 and both were more comfortable than the sprint. I was shocked as it it supposed to be a mile cruncher.

A lot of people prefer the 955i... for many reason but that one is one^^

Depends on the user I guess, same as with any bike. I've ridden all day before on it, without any aches or pains whatsoever. Mine is far more comfortable than the SV was, both solo and especially two up. My gf (who is my usual pillion) also agrees that it is far more comfortable than the SV was.

That's what test rides are for I guess.

I've only had the opportunity of riding the 1050 ST and I like it...much more comfortable than the SV and certainly more comfortable than my daytona 955i.

I would suggest, that for a novice pillion, that rear seat on the ST is a bit high.... Blackbird or 'Busa would be far more comfortable (and faster too!)

I get really p*ssed off with this type of attitude. Not everyone can afford to run two bikes, or is tall enough to be able to ride. I would love to have my own bike to ride. I can't. Full stop.

We enjoy going out together, we share the passion.

I don't mind but who's going to look after the kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My gf will never be able to get a licence (car or bike) due to her eyesight (que all the obvious jokes ). How else would we be able to go out on the bike other than her as a pillion?!

I am quite happy being pillion and its only recently following circumstances changing that we are able to afford a second bike and for me to do my licence. If circumstance hadn't changed then Drew will be very happy me being on the back of the bike for a number of years.

I understand what Lissa means in going on the bike together.

I took Vickster as a pillion at the AR on my ZZR1100. I hardly noticed she was there and she told me it was really comfy, even hooning along at, er, 70 mph!

Cheap-ish bike, good tank range, decent riding position, carries a sh*t load of luggage and goes like hell. What more can you ask for?

I've new girlfriend and its been over 10 years since she went pillion on some cruiser. After some shortish rides around York, we did over 100 miles on Sunday and she loved it. No problems with the seat - and she is not well upholstered.
The best is? Someone to share the experience with when you have the North York moors dressed in purple heather to yourself.

My girlfriend often hops on the back of my Daytona- she likes it! I think she preferred being on the back of my old DR350 as it was comfier, but she is more than happy to hop on the back for a lift into work etc.
