Shame. That doesn't leave much for the tourist trade down there, when you consider they still haven't got permission for the Tropicana development and the tide left some years ago.

A struggling, run-down attraction burnt to the ground.
I bet it was insured....

Well I am usually as sceptical as the rest, but:
"He is absolutely devastated. Mr Michael bought the pier in February and spent around £1m - he's installed a go-kart track, a climbing wall and fitted a bar for the first time.
"His whole plan was to turn it into a premier tourist attraction, in fact he already had. "
That makes it sound like it wasn't an insurance job. Definitely not the right way to go about it anyway!

Used to go there in the 70's - had a little train running down it I recall. Used to get a game of crazy golf at the Arnold Palmer, then 50p on the pier. Looked pretty tatty even back then.
From construction news........
'The pier was in the middle of a £28m redevelopment programme'
Now being in construction myself, and seeing just how many projects are being scrapped/put on hold.
You would be suprised just how many developments are going up in smoke at the moment, then the developer claiming off the contractors insurance..........

:( We used to stop there on the way to cornwall, always went out the pier for a go on the arcade machines (and dropped money through the gaps in the floorboard into the sea). They had the world's most terrifying rollercoaster at teh end of the pier, it went underneath and around one of the supports- it was really slow, it was only terrifying because of the way it rattled and shook
Hope they can rebuild it.
Just think of all the arcade games and fruit machines that might've fallen through the floor, might get down their with a metal detector ;)
So how many people do you think will need rescuing from the mud under the pier :D

Actually you are totally wrong. The pier was bought 6 months ago by one of the riches men in the country who has already spent millions on it

Thats Ok, just no need to get angry, people tend to say what they think on forums so you need to take it with a pinch of salt sometimes.

Dont always assume people are doing something for the good of a town.
Business is business, I have not met a developer yet who has really cared about the area they are developing, they will tell you they do, but all they are really bothered about is their pockets.
If somewhere is uneconomical to run, old and run down, and therefore making making a loss a developer will try and improve it, when they cant they will cut their losses and run.......or burn it down and claim off the insurance.
Its sad but its true.....he's hardly going to beable to sell the place in its current climate.
I understand planning was rejected to make improvements on the place because its listed......another common reason for place getting 'damaged' beyond repair.....planning gets express approval for unsafe buildings ;)

as i said gid knows the man through buisness and he is loaded, so why burn it down. they will rebuild it and do wonders for the town, but thank you for sharing your views. I don't always trust buisness men but i think kerry michals is a saint and well yes he is a buisness man and money is important and stuff, but he also loves weston and wants to do stuff for the people of weston. if it wasn't for men like him weston would be ****.

Lol...met him.....lovely lad.....but yes, a fluffy bunny in real life. lol :D This thread has made me smile on what is a boring day at work......lol.......just made me realise different peoples online persona to their real life.
Anyhows, back to the topic, it is a shame, as it is one of the quirky points of Weston that I really liked. I hope they take the opportunity to improove it and the sea front, as it badly needs some investment.

Everyone is that kind of guy if enough money is involved!!
Has he had a planning app turned down for it? Or plans for improvment been rejected etc? Anything he could get around if 'someone dropped a conviniently placed fag'??

I will calm down and say sorry to the guy that i said it to..
No need at all, I thought you put it quite nicely myself :)
I've worked for the guy myself too actually, but couldn't possibly say what he asked me to do. Data protection and all that ...bleh.
On a separate note; the train took bloody ages back from WSM yesterday! Mind you; it was easier on the way back without having to carry all that kindling.
;)
