View Full Version : What would be the worst company to admit you worked for?

I've been looking for other jobs lately, but there isn't much around of the sort of thing that I'm after. Anyway after a few months of keeping my eyes peeled and having had a particularly rubbish day at work yesterday i was really chuffed to seee EXACTLY the type of role i'm after advertised on a an agency website.
Only I've just found out who it's working for - HMRC  :smt088
Now it's reasonable money, but honestly for me to have to admit to people that i worked for the taxman (ugghh!) that role would need to come with a substantial 'social stigma' bonus! (OK it isn't actually tax collector type stuff but that's not the point)
Which got me thinking - is there any company who it would be worse to admit you worked for??

'Safety' Camera Partnership?
MicroSoft. I know a couple of people that work for them, and don't publically state their employer.

They are reviled amongst bike trade reps. I would be utterly ashamed to admit to selling the crap they make.

I applied for a job with the AWE some time ago... Not sure I could live with myself now if I had got it.
Also applied for Hunting Brae, but was refused.
Not sure I could admit it if I worked for BAE Systems.
You may notice a theme here, they all make weapons or parts for weapons. :(

I was once offered a job defending tobacco-related health and personal injury claims. The great irony was that I hadn't applied for it and I don't smoke.
No. Never. Not in a million years. I couldn't live with myself. I turned it down.

I seem to recall something about them chaining themselves to our gates once - I never saw them so I can't remember now if it was a case that they were removed/it was a story from before I was there/we didn't come in on that day. The last one rings a bell, but I'm thinking maybe it was a protest that was cancelled...
I once went to a site to spec some work, and was advised to " just ignore the people chained to the front gates"

One day a fourth-year teacher asked the children what their fathers did for a living. All the typical answers came up -- fireman, mechanic, businessman, salesman, doctor, solicitor, and so forth.
One little boy, Justin, was being uncharacteristically quiet, so when the teacher prodded him about his father, he replied, "My father's an exotic dancer in a gay cabaret and takes off all his clothes in front of other men and they put money in his under wear. Sometimes, if the offer is really good, he will go home with some guy and make love with him for money."
The teacher, obviously shaken by this statement, hurriedly set the other children to work on some exercises and then took little Justin aside to ask him, "Is that really true about your father?"
No," the boy said, "He works for the Labour Party and helped elect Tony Blair, but I was too embarrassed to say that in front of the other kids."

My work pass has nothing to identifiy where i work thankfully. We often have hippy sorts hanging around which can be fun when they try and cause a fuss.

Yup. And the logo isn't hard to recognise either. A guy here left it in his car overnight and had paint stripper poured over it!
Some guys here were tending the graduate stand at uni exhibitions, and had to be sent on a special course to deal with people attacking them!

Just after I left university I applied to Porton Down laboratory for a job as a Lab Tech, sadly I did not get, I would have been making bio weapons if I got it...:smt077 That would be something I would be very ashamed of now.
I found that my sense of ethics can be so strong, I even changed my Bank (Barclays) because I found out that they invested in Weapons companies. My current Bank (Alliance and Leicester) was really surprised when I questioned them on their ethical policy. The Manager had to step out and get a copy of it to refer to.
I guess I must be one of the Hippies you guys are referring to, although I have not chained myself to any fences and although I am vegetarian, I do approve of animal testing for medicine and control of disease. I wont buy make up that has been tested on animals though and I do think that battery farming is especially cruel.
I think I would struggle to admit to working in Meat production too if I had ever done that.

You monsters...
Mind you I only became a vege when I hit thirty, before that I was a carnivore and ate anything with a pulse...
The best steak I ever had was in Italy... A huge succulent, juicy and tender inch thick, fourteen inches long Horse Steak...
Even now, I can remember the taste and it makes me salivate. :smt077
I will not eat meat...:smt088
I once worked for PGL as a Climbing Instructor, mind you I have also worked for another "Adventure" company that was even worse if you can believe that... I once witnessed a water sports instructor being pulled off of a session because he was under the influence of drugs. He was fired though. :toss:

Or I could just not tell anyone and they'd never know... :-dd

BNP might be a bit of a stretch though, however good the job!
Now then, where do I start........
In order......
