View Full Version : Beijing Opening Ceremony
Anybody else watching it live or on the BBC player.
Bloody impressive, I cant see how anyone let alone the UK can compete against such a thing.
Granted mainly because we dont force people to pratice for 2 years with a gun held against their heads.......but still......absolutely amazing stuff.
I have had more exciting afternoons in B&Q.
Im not a fan of all the arty farty stuff to be honest.

It's fantastic. Never seen anything so impressive. 4 Billion people watching!
No idea how we can compete tbh. I don't think we could manage even one of those 'routines'.

That I think sadly is true :smt053:-D
Without a doubt true.......they are probably concentrating so hard on getting the construction work done...... that they may have even forgot they have to host the games and organise things like this.
The UK simply wont be able to cope, the name will be tarnished and no one will want to do business with the uk ever again........its going to be embarasing but I'm strangely looking forwards to seeing how terrible it will be lol
great to see everybody's getting in the spirit of the games for when we host it. god how much more negative can you get? so bloody annoying

hehe. I'm still giggling at the idea of it.
There's some beautiful girls in the ceremony. It's great seeing how the faces change as the different countries walk out......and how badly dressed the Belgians are
Anyone else playing...'spot the basketball team' ???

I heard countries that have previously hosted the games are on standby and if its clear that the UK are to far behind schedule during 2010 then the bacup will be notified.

It's all well intended Keith. Our track record isn't exactly the most proficient at these things.

Although it really wouldnt suprise me if there was a set up like that in place specificaly because it is the UK lol

I wouldn't worry about the UK struggling with the numbers...... they've got to get through Terminal 5 before they even set foot in the country
We will make a complete farce of it and be the laughing stock of the world haha.

we last hosted the olympics in 1948? i blame rationing for such a poor opening ceremony....
*rolly eyes*
All this talk of delays is quite founded we have been awarded the contract for a media hub amongst other things but no start date as yet its all abit "late" but then i guess we will have to be ready

You know exactly what I meant
There was a guy on his mobile! It's mental that the whole world can play along with each other when it wants. Such a shame that some people can't see beyond their own arrogance and let us all live in peace. [/guardian reader mode]
Woo for Britain! (we're a funny looking lot;))

Isn't the company that constructed and brought us the Millenium dome and Wembley involved, I'm mean they came through when we needed it most.
Hmmm, the UK olympics are going to be fun. As its in Stratford, the Shooting comp is going to take place from the back of a BMW at 40mph.
As for the place being built. Greece only just managed it, i reckon that we wont finish intime and no where near on budget!

Maybe we should.......usless barstewards might win a few more medals, lol.
I hear that when we hold our Olympics our authoroties plan to cope with tha massive numbers travelling to the UK we will not be checking any details of people entering the country and will also be offering free accomodation, food and a mobile phone.

I hear they will be offered a free house, NHS and money too.
And so everybody looks smart there will be nice new clothes to wear too.
The joys of being British;-)

What.... paying you to watch the opening ceremony?
What.... paying you to watch the opening ceremony?
that too:smt064
That just the thing though hovis.......The Chi's are business guros......for them it didt cost £12bn to host it like here in the UK, infact they will come out of it better off and will probably have made a considerable amount of money.
Unlike here in the UK where it will cost the earth.....we will be paying it off for years......and it will still be utter rubbish.
Lets not forget the chinese built an entire airport 6 x the size of T5.....in half the time for 30% of the cost.......Well they have done the same with the olympics.

Yeah we're screwed. That was an amazing and beautiful ceremony. Obviously on the back of the military who staffed the event. But as a nation clearly an immense sense of purpose. Interesting to see the crowds response to the Pakinstani and Taiwan crew, very positive. The London do is going to be a major problem for us as a nation. I mean we can't even get behind it here in etherspace let alone on the ground. Where exactly are we going to find all those volunteers? Are we going to turn out the care homes? Can the Scout movement step up? Let's face it folks, we've moved on so much from having to prove ourselves on the track and field. Freedom of speech and the rights of the individual have been the Wests battleground. Maybe now's the time to think about how we have neglected our collective identity in favour of selfish aims!
Jesus, I've been converted....

I think this whole Olympic thing has become a colossal waste of money.International willy waving which has nothing to do with sport and everything to do with powerful people exploiting ordinary ones.Just like the Millenium Dome I struggle to think of more stupid ways to waste billions of our money.Just at a time when we can all afford it of course.
More ranting to follow.

Sorry can I just clarify here? Are you claiming 'Ranting Rights' in which case I challenge you as a previous claimant. You have no idea how effective I can be when it comes to moaning and general belly aching. Are you sure you want to claim this territory as yours? It's not worth it man, step away now. It really was a beautiful ceremony though. Really. But lets not lift the lid, or I'll have to challenge you to a griping duel ok?

It was bloody impressive..and most people probably don't know that the Stage Management team making it all run smoothly are English :takeabow: (and are the same team that did the opening ceremonies for Athens and Sydney)
Still, all the performers won't put a foot out of place for fear of being beaten with a big stick!

I claim full ranting rights as I live in a London borough and hence have to pay extra council tax to pay for it all.Im eagerly awaiting the return on my investment post 2012,but Im not staking my life on getting it.

The UK Olympics is the time for anyone with anything about them in the UK to go and make a killing. I know hundreds of project managers/welders/riggers/electricians/tiffies/construction workers rubbing their hands with glee.
Go and get your share, you're paying for it after all ;)
Easier said than done....most of it is on framework agreemants, unless you are in the in crowd you dont stand much chance of getting work unless you are in the basic trades and have connections.
Fortunately my company has Sir Steven Redgrave as our olympic constuction bid ambasador lol
svgirl78 ... Your dead right of course they had english stage managers.. we are the best in the business ;):takeabow:
Sadly however it does look like the opening ceromony for England will be a dissapointment, mainly as we will have to follow such an impressive and grand array of talent and frankly breath taking specticals that we have just been witness too!!
It is widly rumoured in the business that the opening ceromony is already been planned for on the "cheep" which obviously isnt going to be as impressive as what we have just seen by any stretch of the imagination!
As for getting volounteers well the olympic council wrongly asumed that they would be inundated with people willing to put themselves forward for free on the basis of the prestige of such an event behind them and are coming up empty handed... after all we are talking about something that will take a good deal of time, practice and there will always be costs involved in that!
Dont forget the "volunteers" in Beijing didnt really have a choice in the matter... please dont think that I am trying to take anything away from them the national pride, whether you like the politics in the country or not, is imense and hats off to them.. with the eyes of the world watching them they pulled it out of the bag!
I on the other hand am carefully watching with anticipation to see what we can pull out of the bag for our olympic games and yes, gleefully rubbing my hands together knowing that I have changed career at just the right time to certainly cash in on the huge event that will employ the majority of london's technicians![-o<[-o<[-o<[-o<

well I've just graduated so I'm working any place I can shove my foot in the door...luckily it's going quite well for me right now and the work seems to be coming in.. although freelancing is quite worrying when you look at the diary and realise that you have chunks of time when your not booked yet.
What area are you in?

I'm at Glyndebourne Opera on permanent contract and do a bit of freelancing in Feb/March when G/bourne is dark...where abouts did you study? I did the degree in SM and Tech Theatre at GSMD and graduated in 2000.
(Sorry Mods I know we have ventured totally off topic!)
