Heres some of the photos I took today at Mallory of the gents from soho.

Nice to meet new and old faces again.

I turned up, and immediately the red flag went up :cyclops: unfortunately it chris (Sorry for the photo, had to be done :D lol). To be fair though this was done in the first session and by lunch the bike was fixed and he was back out, out cornering bigger opposition.

Pictures look good, i think the Devil's Elbow is the best place for left knee on the deck photos! So if you go again, as the photographer nicely! Either way, looks good!

Anyone deliberately trying to get their knee down at the Devil's Elbow is a fool; it's a downhill off camber bend and that tyre wall to the right is not very far away at the sort of speed you're carrying through there. The left into Edwinas or through the Bus-stop are a far better choice if you want photos of left knee down.

Nice photos, Graeme. Was it a Hotrax day?

Nice pics G. I still want to have a play at Mallory, but something always goes wrong when I try to book it.

Strange place to dump it. Normally coming out of Edwinas where it all goes t*ts up.

you're right it is. my fault for locking up the front, but i did that because someone in front of me (a large bunch of people had just formed), braked hard right in front of me and i grabbed a hanful too much locked it up and went down on the left side :(:smt092:smt092 soooooooo bloomin angry with myself!! but hey i just have a slight bruise on my hip/thigh and i got back out having bought some bits. you live and learn!!

Ditto. I have been to Mallory a few times and would never get my knee on the deck. Apart from having to shift mid-corner (one instance where a GP shift pattern is beneficial) the downhill off camber-ness means you are way more likely to lose the front.

I had a mate who sadly died whilst racing at Mallory and i have a picture of him going down the Devil's Elbow with his knee down, obviously he was racing so probably pushing harder, and it is a brilliant picture one of my favorites!

Never had the joy of racing at Mallory... yet. But I have done a few ACu days there. One of my favourite tracks! Just a shame that gerrards has got that stupid chicaine now. I very rarely get my knee down at the devils elbow, but when I do, it's usually my gear lever, footpeg and then my knee. As you say Mallory does benifit rac shift set up but I just can't get on with it.

Nice pics by the way, glad you all enjoyed yourselves!

I was taught by my mate Danny - who is a top level club racer and trackday instructor - to short shift a second gear after I exited the Bus-stop and then move my foot right back on the footrest, that way there's no need for the upshift halfway down the hill and your toe is well clear of touching down and possibly hitting the gearchange. Being a steep downhill section you'll have plenty of grunt to get and keep you moving and you'll have an advantage over those people trying to upshift whilst cranked right over.

That dropped my laptimes on the next session by 1 1/2 secs a lap as I was making some good overtakes at the bottom of the hill onto the start-finish straight.

Gerards is a proper knee down corner, as is just about every other corner there, even the sharp right in the middle of the Bus-stop, but never at Devil's Elbow.

The Gerards chicane isn't there permanently, only certain clubs use it at their discretion and it's never used on No Limits trackdays I've done there since it's been put in - it's also never used on Wednesday afternoon parctise sessions. Unfortunately Bemsee used it last year and there were huge numbers of crashes, to the extent that a large number of prominent riders told the organisers that they wouldn't do another Mallory meeting with them if the chicane was used again. My mate Danny crashed there twice that weekend and we took his ZX10R home with huge amounts of damage (If it had been an older road bike I'd have thrown it in a skip); by far the worst meeting he has ever had and he swore he'd never go on that circuit again if that chicane was in place.

Yeah totally agree. As I say the ACU days never use it so I have never had the joy of going through it but some of the minitwinners who raced there last year echoed the thoughts you have put forward there. BEMSEE dropped it this year, I presume for that very reason.

Thanks for taking the pics G, they're really good!

Edwina's is a great place to get your knee down. I mean, even I managed it! I really struggled with the left hander in the esses, really had to fight the bike over left after the right hander. It was funny to see how some people tackled the hairpin - I think guy on a VFR almost came to a complete stop a few times.

It was a great day out, I would definitely be keen to go back. Luckily it was a nice dry day.

The chicane on Gerrard's wasn't in use. I reckon it would have ruined the day, especially seeing as Gerrard's is a 90mph corner, to have to deal with that at the end of it would have been impossible.

Over all, a top day out!

Nice pics G thanks!

I got my knee down for a first time too! Although looking at the slider maybe it was my peg. That long left hander scared me a bit. I had the front skipping in the first few sessions and learned to short shift and take it easy.

It was a good day if a little scary. Got brushed up by a Ducati and then nearly taken off in the same session by a t**t cutting right in front of me at the left into the esses. Not sure if there was contact but I was fuming and went onto the grass. Had to compose myself before getting back on the circuit to go into the pits. Not 100% sure who it was but had a good whinge to the organisers.

It was Hottrax Lozzo. I'm not too keen on them with there always being something not on. The briefing was over far too quickly with no mention about responsibilities and what not to do, hence my scares. We all have our preferences though.

Riding a full 25 minute session was hard work. The red flags kept the first few broken up which was quite welcome.

Good day though.

:)

Nice advice! I would short shift, but not short enough by the sounds of it!

Was weird/frustrating taking photos and not riding lol. Was still very enjoyable though.

Hottrax are running a Rockingham National Day on Sunday 21st September if you still fancy something towards the end of september, £89 I think it is which isnt bad.

I'll not be able to book until I'm back in the country on the 7th September though.

Its actually £129 which is quite abit for rockingham, still not bad for a sunday.

I'd like to do Rockingham National, I've done the International and wasn't overly impressed with the oval and the stupid chicane leading onto it, nor the hairpin coming off it. National circuit looks more fun for me.

Its actually £129 not £89 like I had thought. Still not bad for a sunday and probably the last good weather of this year.

The national circuit looks pretty good, and I need practice cornering on my left.

The international worries me as I assume the oval is pretty fast, the camber is weird and you have a concrete wall to side if you dont judge where the edge of your tyre is.

Lozzo

The oval is the boring bit, it's not in the least bit challenging. The wall is there but you're upright for the whole of it and nowhere near the edge of the tyre.

Ah right I always assumed it was like a nascar fast banked oval for some reason. Never been to rockingham.

They don't Chris.

They use Reilly studios. Apparently they're the only people that photograph there.

aaaahhhaaa, thanks for that mate.

it's a bit odd of them to say on their website that all their track day photography is doen by one company and then have another turn up and do it somewhere

Rockingham national is what we did last June, it was really good fun and great for the sv! £89 it cost us though ;)
