Meant to ask this before:

Well is it good form or not to laugh when someone makes the mistake between the petrol and the diesel pumps on an org rideout :?:

Er silly question time, what is the actual difference between all of the types of fuel you get at a petrol station and why can't you put any fuel in your engine?

When I fill my SV up which fuel should I use, normal unleaded or the more expensive one?

So long as it's petrol, you won't notice the difference between normal/premium unleaded.

Diesel is lower octane (a hydrocarbon similar to parafin - the octane is the stuff that burns) than unleaded petrol is, which leads to less fuel vaporisation in the cylinder. The effects from here depend how much you put in the tank, and how much unleaded you still have in there (since they're mixed in the fuel tank).

The effects of diesel in a petrol engine range from nothing, through to failure of critical parts (pistons, crank, rods, head etc etc).

Some modern engines have sensors that will try to accomodate for numpty owners, but the SV doesn't have one of those engines.

It's all a conspiracy. An engine will run on cheese, or love if you try :smt039

I considered something along the lines of "It's a ducati, you don't have to help it break down!"

But I thought better of it, having met Lissa a number of times.

The best bit was trying to get someone to take the fuel off them, people looking at them thinking.. "must be dodgy.. no-one gives diesel away at a filling station"

Having done this myself :( there are a couple of things to remember

Stick in 12 quids worth of Diesel and realise as I walk to the kiosk but still have to pay. At least I didn't start the bike
Have to slip the breakdown truck guy £20 to suck it out as mis fueling is considered a self inflicted injury and would have cost me £120 to get the bike home
Sick in anther £12 of fuel (petrol this tiem ;))
Net cost to me £44 for 3 gallons of fuel

An experience i don't wish to repeat

how about 12l of diesel. Garage owners whose only help is to SELL you 2 10l containers, walk around a forecourt for 20 minutes with a bright yellow petrol tank trying to persuade someone to let you give them free fuel. While 40 "friends" shout encouragement from the carpark. LOL.

Laugh while you can tomorrow of may be your turn.

The bag of spanners apparently ran better after the incident. Yes...perhaps? although they spent all the weekend going zooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom:-)........still didn't stop it sounding like a spanner being dragged along behind on a chain though

Strange, it should have had a narrow filler opening to only accept unleaded.
Unlike an old Ducati

Petrol and diesel? So passé! On a trip to France earlier this year, one of our crowd mixed up the pumps for unleaded and paraffin.

At the next stop...

Quiff (serious): I was thinking about getting a 749, but I've gone off it.

Pete (not seeing it coming): How come?

Quiff (comedy pause): Can't afford the price of diesel.

All: :smt046

You'll be old and senile too Phil one day, and that's not far off I reckon.:p:p

Yes it's true, the Dieselsedici does run better, and does 80 to the gallon too.:smt103

Wish the pump had the old style nozzle Stu, but it was a narrow one sadly. :smt071

Well to it's credit Baph it never faltered once in 1500 miles. Must try and treat it with a bit more respect though.:smt007

What a kn0bhead I am. :(

Luckily it only cost 32 quid to put right. Wing mirrors and gear levers can cost more than that.

And I'm glad I was able to take the gentle ribbing as I'm the first to dish it out. :laughat: :p

Thanks to YC for getting his hands wet and to my various other helpers who acquired the containers, connected things, and kept my spirits up.:D:D

If only that had been the first time!](*,)

2nd that :D Tis becoming a bit of a habbit Pete - didnt the SV get the same treatment not long back too?

Seriously, glad all got sorted & no damage caused. I did the exact opposite last week to my diesel car - The AA relieved me of the best part of £190 to get it drained

So, just because it sounds like that at tickover doesn't mean it is a diesel!

Was quite amusing anyway watching peoples faces when pete wanders over with a fuel tank saying "want some free diesel?"

The manager sent one of his till-monkeys out after pete bought the containers. It went a little like "excuse me" "yes we know these aren't suitable for fuel, cheers" "errmm..."

Got the fuel out of the tank and managed to give it away to a guy with an old transit. He was well chuffed with it!
