View Full Version : Bike related question. Swap or not?
For those who've been around for a while you'll know I had my heart set on a Firestorm but could not find one. I now have the chance of an 03 yellow one with a whopping 900 miles on it. Will cost me my 03 SV1000 plus about a grand.
What do you think?
Anyone want a silver naked thou?
Tough one. Nobody really wants an SV thou, but nobody really wants a VTR either.
Considered an Aprilia?
Where have you looked for a Firestorm? There are a few on MCN.

A bike related question in the GM? What the hell is going on around here? ;-)

That's why I put the BIKE related bit in the subject to save offending anyone who may have opened the posting in error nad been shocked to find mention of motorcycles.
Out of interest, anyone interested in a naked thou?

I can't really see the point. The Firestorm was quite a nice bike in it's day, but it's really very long in the tooth now and looks very dated. An extra grand on top of the value of your SV1000 sounds like a lot to me. I really doubt that the firestorm is that much better than the thou.

They come in yellow and aren't made by Suzuki. I don't want one though. Yuck.

Ignore anything he says, he rides a RGV after all.

You're just jealous because you own the wrong kind of V-twin.
It's going on the dyno at Banjax tomorrow, should be interesting to see what it makes. Gixer's going on today, if I see anything less than 130bhp at the back wheel I'll be disappointed.

No I don't its not a Harley...
I must be confused, I have two... plus access to a monster and Caponord.

To own one SV650, Mr Grinch, may be regarded as a misfortune. To own two looks like carelessness.
Have you ever looked at the address of the site your posting on? Ain't this sort of thing they get up to on Visordrone... ;-)
If it don't produce 100 bhp and has such and such blah, blah, then your a girl. :smt071
Or are you drawn by my amazin good looks, after all I can understand, but there is only so much of Dan to go round.
If my RGV makes 100 bhp I'll run naked down the Strand. If the Gixer makes any less I'll scrap it.
I like 69... its a rather pleasing number.

I very much doubt anyone actually gets to use over 100bhp on the road in a meaningful way. Usable power is far better than peak power unless you're some kind of track-day addict. Also many people cover up poor riding by adding huge power. I've seen many good riders on lower powered bikes leaving litre sport bikes on anything not dead straight.
You pay's your money and takes your choice.
Personally I like lumpy slightly agricultural v-twins as I find them more "engaging" than the slicker IL4s. The VTR is dated and underpowered by modern standards but sounds fantastic and having carbs does not make the annoying whistle associated with injection bikes. Just not convinced it'll be much different to ride than my SVthou just a little less comfy.
I do keep re-convincing myself I do not need a GSX-R 750 or a blade but will doubtless give in one day or completely sell out and get an FJR and some Sidi slippers.
Ah, the old "you can't use that much power on the road" argument. Absolute rubbish.
I've been out for rides on the RGV with people on litrebikes and left them for dead. I've been out for rides on an SV650 with people on litrebikes and juuuuuuust about managed to keep up but had to thrash the tits off it to do so. I've been out for rides on a ZX7R with people on litrebikes and simply been unable to keep up because, regardless of what happens up to the apex, they can leave you for dead on the exit. It's hard work. Fun, but hard.
It really does depend how you ride and who you're riding with - in the cases above the company ranged from the painfully slow to a bloke who's done a 117mph lap of the TT course. This is the reason I have two bikes - one light but not very powerful, the other heavier but grunty - so I can choose the most appropriate bike for the ride.
There's no such thing as "one size fits all", and "you can't use that much power on the road" is a completely facile argument, usually trotted out by people whose bikes don't make "that much power" and who should really know better.

Looks like you are paying a lot of that £1K as dealer profit & not much for the reduced miles/different bike.
If you've got that much to spare take a test ride & see if it's worth it. Wouldn't be to me.

Umm, maybe. Mileage/age etc.
Not for me though.

2004/54 25k miles. Silver, Naked, various go-faster bits + all originals too. Usual suzuki faults of fork/engine casing furryness goes like stink.

I wouuld prefer that anyday over an '03, 900 mile Firestorm. Never mind having to pay £1K

Pah - if you'd got the thou instead of your halfassed cop out you coud have had 165......

Seems like a lot of money for a thirsty bike.... tuono is the answer.

As it turns out, I've only got 117 at the wheel. Rubbish.
The RGV's putting out a healthy 55 at the wheel though. That's 220bhp/litre. Nice.
Sorry did I say 165? I meant 166......:-dd
As it turns out, I've only got 117 at the wheel. Rubbish.
Oh well best scrap it...
It's OK. I'm reliably informed it's not possible to actually make use of much more than 100bhp on the road anyway, so I might as well live with it for now.
Got my eye on a set of Arrow spannies for the RGV though - 60bhp and 139kg is easily do-able.
As it turns out, I've only got 117 at the wheel. Rubbish.
Wow a whole 5.2 bhp more than my apparently loathsome SV. I do of course leave the extra 11.8 bhp at home when I go out on the road but replace it with my 67.4 torques which always come in handy. :)
The weird thing about the 750 is that the power curve on the chart looks almost linear, but the delivery feels anything but. Suzuki have worked some magic with that bike - it only makes a few ponies more than my old 7R but the way it does it is so visceral it's an absolute hoot.
I see a thou (either 10R or GSXR) on the cards next year though.

What for? If the 750 is scary enough why get something quicker. Bragging rights? :p
I'm glad my 10R sale fell through. Firstly I couldn't afford the insurance but also, that much bike is too much for me and for the road. Now if you were doing trackdays I would say furry muff. A 600cc SS is as fast as I want to be on the public roads. Me getting all sensible in my old age, whatever next, I'll keep a bike longer than 5 mins?!?! :p

I said the 750 was visceral, not scary. As is always the way, for the first couple of weeks it felt absolutely insane but having ridden it to Belgium and back it's just a hoot. I wouldn't say no to a bit more midrange, too - there's not much usable below 8 grand. I wouldn't bother with a 600 at all unless insurance forced my hand - if I want something peaky and underpowered I've got the two-stroke to play with.

Your RG is not underpowered! It goes like stink from what I remember.
Hmm, I dunno. A litre bike, while controllable if being sensible.......I just think I would hurt myself.

Everything's relative.
RGV250: 55bhp, ~153kg kerb weight, 80kg rider: ~0.23bhp/kg
GSXR750: 118bhp, ~179kg kerb weight, 80kg rider: ~0.45bhp/kg
Of course, it all depends how you ride it. I have been known to hustle the RGV along at times.
Where was this dyno place anyway and was it expensive?

Banjax in Bethnal Green. 40 quid per session, which is reasonable enough for a curiosity run. Decent blokes too.

Hmm, that is good. I may be tempted once I get the Hornet mods.
Stage 1 dynojets, high flow filter, Ohlins springs and an Ohlins rear shock. :smt007 Should give it a little more oomph. I may get a steering damper too, I was racing a Buell last night and I as rounded a slight bend I got a bit of a head shaker. Didn't back off mind and ended up winning. Well, he bottled it before I did. Phew. :p LIke I said, a 600cc machine is enough for me.
:D
Yup make sure you get it dyno'd after your ohlins springs & shock, you should notice quite a difference ;)
Didn't back off mind Isn't that the recommended course of action for a shake? :???:
Apparently if you've taken your brave pills then popping a wheelie prevents the full tank slapper.

Well it worked this time, it wasn't a major shake but enough for me to notice it and hang on. ;) I was shocked that I kept the Buell behind me, we were on a dual carriadgeway and he went to overtake but couldn't get past. We were going for it though. The noise was amazing. I always thought those Buells were meant to be stupid quick.
