under slightly heavy braking the front end seems to make a clunking noise and feels a bit off - mainly occurs when gearing down and using the front brake
is this normal or is something up? its going in for its first service on friday so any ideas would be welcome
Hhhhhmmmmm mine does the same i think its something to do with the forks any ideas anybody?

Sounds like either the head bearings being loose or your wheel bearings are shot. Make sure you mention it when you get it serviced!
They all do it.
When you hit a hefty pothole perhaps, but not under brakes, ever. (In my experience. I'd be concerned if it did).

my [pointy does it and so did my previous curvy, Had steve jordan look at both and he reckons they all do it, his missus who races mini-twins also reckons they all do it, had ohlins springs fitted to mine with stiffer oil and it still does it, it even knocks slightly when depressing the forks at stand-still, if the jordans dont know what it is i guess nobody does.... have to say htough that its never affected the handling or braking of mine on road or track, someone told me its the mudguard flexing, but cant be bothered to take it off to prove it !!
p.s get the ohlins fork mod done (about £100 if you take it in) absolutely transforms it !

There are several things that can have similar sounding symptoms over the internet. Check your head races, wheel bearings and that the brake disks are not moving on their mounts. There does seem to be a harmless clunk from the SV forks, but it's worth checking that this is what you're hearing.

good point that, mine is an 05 and has always done it. It doesnt affect the bikes handling in anyway brake discs are ok head bearings are fine and it is just when i go over pot holes or something alike.
I find that with the floating discs on these bikes they can chatter when cold, also if your front pads are quite worn the calipers can seem like they are loose. Remember the discs should be able to move a small amount on their mounts.
As for the head bearings I will check mine tomorrow, just want to be sure my clonking is not something serious.
Good comments on this thread, cheers.
Mine did it and it had USD srad front end fitted!!

not had a chance to ride it yet, but the garage said the head bearing was the problem and tightened it

Pads can chatter too, stripping and cleaning calipers usually solves that.

is it as if theres abs cutting in?
i had it once in an emergency braking situation while leaning.
there was a noise from the front forks like bottoming out/crunching/a.b.s.
still stopped ok tho and havent heard it since cos i dont brake hard tbh

To be more constructive.. ;)
I find the SV can bottom out quite easily. Maybe you're bouncing off the bottom of the forks.

When i had all my body work removed (including front fender) to fit new springs and oil, i took it for a test ride "naked" and no knocking noise.
Re fitted bodywork, and back came the noise.

Thats usually one of the electrical connectors behind the fairing.
noticed a clunking now and again on my curvy and have diagnosed it to be the discs having free play on the rivvets(?).is this normal?
i understand that there should be side to side but what about forwards and backwards(as mine do!)

Most likely, depends on how much free play they have.

Depends on which way you mean forwards and backwards. I have movement in my discs (Daytona 675) in the direction which the wheel rotates, like this:

and is perfectly normal on semi floating discs. Not sure what you have on the SV though...........
