There is no doubting which is the better bike in my mates opinion... who has a VFR800... and it isn't his  Infact he said he have a SV650 if his brother didn't have one already.

But thats fine, you enjoy yours ill enjoy mine, we are all happy. :D

I only had to replace the reg/rec shortly before I sold the bike after 5 yrs & 25k miles.

The only reason I didn't buy another is that I hate the VTEC system (not something that the OP has to worry about)

The Falco is a good bike - but more sports orientated than sports tourer - it just became overshadowed by its better & newer sibling the Mille. The best I ever saw & rode was a 'fightered one that had had a LOT of money thrown at it - Ohlins front end - Ohlins rear shock - blueprinted engine - 916 swingarm - now that was a nice bike, but I wouldn't have wanted to go touring on it !! :D

Took a VFR out a couple of months back - mate in Yorkshire was selling it, and I was tempted - really comfortable and pretty deceptively quick too - really nice bike....

Rode a Falco just for a larf at a dealers in July - didn't really do anything for me, dont see the point, why not buy an RSV? - The riding position seemed pretty similar between the 2 (falco and RSV that is)...and the RSV looks loads better, and better specced...

My bet would be a ZX12...go, you know you want to....

TBH they arnt that unconformable... imo, bit better than the SVs. Yes they are probably a bit more sporty than the VFR but that isnt such a bad thing, most of the time.

The rear shock is the only thing that could be put to fault on the bike.

You do find that like the SV (probably more so) people do modify the Falco. Why not I guess. :D

Anyway I shouldn't go on... I have too many times

I still dont think going to a VFR from a SV650 is a very major change and is pretty much pointless.

And VFR's are fat :( (BTW I do like the idea of the VFR, Gear driven cams, V4, pretty bike, but I think Honda has gone down the wrong path, especially now and there are easier (to run) cheaper bikes around now).

The only prob with both the ZX12 & the Blackbird (and I have ridden both) is that whilst they are excellent for nipping across Europe in a few days, they are pretty crappy around town - the 'Bird especially - it has a similar turning circle to a double-decker bus !!

The rear shock and the swing arm is the only "real" (there are a few more small ones, looks mostly) difference... The looks are a little like Marmite. The good reason is that the Falco costs less to insure and is just as fast, plus wont cripple you on a ride further than 100 miles.

What even against the RSV-R (or factory, whatever it was) - thought they had lightweight wheels, Ohlins a few bhp, and all that stuff?

I challenge you to a lap round the 'Ring, you on your Viffer, me on my SV.

PS all said tongue in cheek, well slightly ;)

TBH its down to Rider and bike relation... If the rider dont get on with the bike then it means there is probably a bike to better suit. This is about what suits. In my opinion it is more a side step than a step up to the VFR.

Dizzy, get out and do some test riding.

Comparing standard bikes with the same rider on the VFR is faster.

It's over 30 bhp up, better brakes (until it went all CBS anyway), better suspension and higher top speed. Even my old '88 VFR is a full 2 seconds faster 0-100 than the SV.

Comparing modified bikes with different riders round a track which one knows and the other doesn't is pointless.

I'd be up for it but I'd have to try both SV and VFR. :D

And bring the car ( RX-8 ), and the NC35...

The one before 2006 - you should be able to get one in that price range and it has plenty of power and reliability.

TBH Tim, you probably thrash the ar$e off me, but thats probably more down to my riding than the bike. Having had an SV, I know the Viffer in a straight line is quicker than my SV was, and it handles better than my SV did, but thats just my opinion.

Depends really. If, like Dizzy, you're after a tourer, then the SV can't compete with the VFR. It's a definate step up (even two or three) from an SV. It's built for the job, carries anything (I hope!!) and will cruise in comfort all day long. I couldn't do more than two hours on my SV without it braking my back

you could give phil his own forum, where only he has access, and he can talk about the falco all day and night perhaps?

you could pad the walls and lock the door and he could wear some kind of restraining jacket whilst he sat rocking in the corner mumbling;

"falco..... best bike ever.... why don't you love it as much as i do......"

an idea perhaps?

I quite like the viffer myself, i might know of a cheap one going soon 03 plate, one of my neighbours buggered off with a younger model and his bike has been sat untouched by the side of my garage for 12 months, i might speak to his missus and see if she wants rid of it.
Just needs a bit of TLC. The bike that is, not the estranged wife.

Next year i'll be looking at a change, i wanna go nekkid, i do have a soft spot for either Z1000 or the Tuono, see what the finance officer says next year :D

Well, it's a big bike really I'm after. I'm 6'2" which isn't the tallest, but when I'm doing 200-400 miles in a day every fortnight or so, it gets a bit wearing on the little SV. Get on a 600 and I can't even see the speedo! That's why I like the look of the 'tona 955 or the ZX9. Lardy sportsbikes I suppose I'm after ;)

I agree lots of power and torque. Weights a lot though and isnt as sporty as you may want. Nice bike though! :D

Out of the Kawa and the 955i I would go for the 955i.

+1. Great all-rounder. Or SV1000s dead cheap but I may be slightly biassed on that one.

+1 for the Thunderace.

For 3k you can pick up a mint one and it's a really good all-round bike. Looks are an aquired taste, but if you're thinking of a 'busa then you'll already be aware of this ;)

I've had my Ace since February and I think it's a great bike that does everything really well. It's great two up (nice roomy seat and bags of underseat storage), good for cruising on the motorway and isn't too big for London. It's a tad heavy on the track (220kg wet) but you can eliminate a lot of weight by swapping out the exhaust headers for stainless ones.

Thunderace, Sprint, VFR, ZX9R, SV1000S, Fireblade, 'Busa, B'Bird - lots of choices!

The VFR's maintenance schedule, and the cost of it, is something to be aware of.

Everyone I know who's had a B'Bird swears by them, and I've also heard great things about touring on a 'Busa.

I had a ZX9R C1, they're great bikes. You could find a nice 00-03 one for your budget. Comfy and powerful.
