View Full Version : GSXR 1000 Settings
Hi All,
I fit a K3/4 rear shock to my K3 after being inspired by others on the forum.
Can anyone tell me the standard settings, at the moment preload is 22mm of thread showing above top ring and damping and compresion are both seven clicks out from fully in.
Any help appreciated.

Set the preload to approx 1/4-1/3 through the suspensions travel when you are sat on it, as for the rest, no idea.

Aye approx 30mm of movement (sag) when you are sat on it. The others you want to trial and test see what feels better for you. I cant give you a rough idea though sorry. maybe search google for what the Gixxer lads run?

I am sure the GSXR1000 service manual says the compression and rebound settings are 8 clicks from the softest settings. They have a range of 20 clicks I think.
I cant remember what the preload is factory set to though. I have the manual at work so I will take a look.

Doesn't matter really, the bikes are different so the stock settings don't mean much. You've got to get out and ride it and adjust based on second guesses and luck :-P
Thanks all, sounds like it is set to standard as is. Like as been said, I need to go out and play.

Well as a rough guide...
Preload. Measure the sag. When you are on the bike Vs bike on side stand the suspension should sag 30-40mm. If not adjust the preload till it does.
Rebound dampening. Set this so that when the suspension moves back into the starting position it doesnt move past it I.E. doesnt go higher than its starting position then move back down into the position.
Compression dampening. This one can be a little complex, its down to feel really. Obviously you want some on so the back doesnt flap about and get annoying but you dont want it so harsh that you have no suspension. This one is really down to feel.
Have fun! :D

+ 1, reverting to stock GSXR settings is about as much use as any other setting. The bikes are different, the damping is different...
When I win the lottery, this will be the first thing I do - go and get my suspension professionally set up.

Remember if the front feels harsh after changing the shock then you probably have too much compression on.
Also with a taller rear shock you'll need more front preload, and I found I needed more front compression damping.
Just fitted a GSXR 1000 K4 rear shock, with 8 clicks out from soft on compression and rebound, and about 10cm of thread above the top lock ring.
The bike feels nice on smooth roads, but a bit too harsh otherwise. Reckon I need to knock a bit of compression and preload off?
Anyone care to share the settings that they're happy with? I'm about 13.5 stone.
It's also made the bike quite a bit lower, more than I expected, so I might take the skinny seat off!
I moved the undertray back about an inch, was a bit fiddly taking the undertray off and getting everything to fit nicely, but I'm quite happy with how its turned out. Happy to post pics if anyone is interested.

Clicks out from soft?
It's usually anticlockwise (out) to soften)
Ok, I meant 8 clicks from softest :p

If it's dropped the back a lot maybe you have too much front preload on.
What is sag at the back?
Cheers.
I'll tell you tomorrow, when I'll also have a squiz at the front preload.

Only change one thing at once.
Right, I measured the rear sag by measuring between the end of the swing arm and the indicator. I measured the distance 3 times, once with the bike on the side stand, once with me sat on the bike, and once holding the bike upright, but with no load.
Side stand > me sitting on = 40mm
Vertical > me sitting on = 25mm
I gave it an extra click toward soft on the compression earlier, then dropped the forks through yokes by about 8mm, feels much nicer than yesterday, but I'm sure I can get it better.

What about totally unloaded? (get all weight off the back tyre, compared with you sat on it.... total sag)
50mm rear totally unloaded to me sitting on. I guess thats why it feels low, especially as I take a pillion quite a bit....
Do I want to aim for total sag of 35mm?
Front is 32mm.

I use a little less sag than that. 35mm total compression from unloaded, to me sat on it.
I don't bother with static sags on front end... just use a cable tie to adjust to give about 10mm travel remaining under hard braking.
Just set mine to about 35mm total. Made a huge difference, its lovely!
I've got about just over half the thread showing above the lock ring now.
If anyone has a gsxr shock, but hasn't set the sag, go and do it!
Now if a shock can make this much difference, what would new forks and brakes do.....:p

Set the sag - rider and static, there are many guides on the tinternet, but this is good resource:

You could use the baseline settings on here, but obviously they will be for a GSXR-1000, not an SV. I'd use them as a baseline and then work from there. End of the day, no-one can tell you what numbers to dial in yourself as everyone is different. Important thing is to make one change at a time and record everything so you can go back.
I have a gsxr 1000 K4 rear shock and Ohlins front springs and it feels great!
