I once did something similar with a Land Rover, the tank was cracked wide open and we need to RTB.

One of the bike mags attempted to beat the record for John O' groats to Lands Ends a couple of years back. The chap who did best had a fuel cannister strapped to either side of his bmw, as it's quicker to fill up from cannisters than pumps (once you factor in paying etc.)!

Yeah, I reckon it would take quite a lot to split a gas canister, those one looked like they had protected valves as well.
