View Full Version : Newbie Saying Hello and help!
Hi All,
I haven't had a lot of time to read through the pages of the site yet as about a day after signing up to the site I slid off my 05 SV650 S and broke myself on a car that was waiting to turn at some traffic lights!
Still, I am now out of itensive care and back home (With a little time on my hands untill I can go back to work, time that is itching my 'need' to fix up my bike quickly! Even though I can't ride her yet.)
Needless to say I am a new rider, and have just experienced the 'too much front brake' syndrome! My injuries were / are Broken Left Femur, 6 broken ribs, punctured / collapsed lung, legions to spleen and kidney causing internal bleeding, seriously bruised man vagtables and a fractured collar bone or two. That's the injuries to me, unfortunatly as you are all well aware I guess, I am on the road to repair, but my bike seems less eager to repair iteself and is currently sitting in the garage waiting for some help!
Damage to the bike is luckily rather minimal as the bike simply slid down the road, so far I have listed it as:
1. RHS slip on is damaged at end (worn away from slide. Not sure if this can be repared or needs to be replaced) (STD Kit)
2. RHS bar end gone (and so has fixing screw / rubber) (STD kit)
3. RHS Front brake lever very bent! (Banditmania)
4. RHS Rear brake lever snapped (Std Kit)
5. Nose cone damaged
6. RHS Lower fairing scrached / damaged (wish I bought some bungs!)
7. Fixing lug for iridium screen broken off
8. RHS Foot Peg (anodised blue, origins unknown) snapped off
9. RHS Grip wrecked (Banditmania)
10. Exhaust scratched and flattened a bit by road! (Demon Performance, unsure of origin - Demon Tweaks perhaps?))
If anyone can point me in the right direction with any of the problems / damage I have listed regarding the poor bike, I would greatly appreciate it...
Also, any advise on a decent set of tryes would be well received. (Think it's got Dunlop Sportmax or something like that at the minute. Should be called slipmax!)
Sorry about the essay, too much time on hands and too much Morphine in blood maybe!
Many thanks
DF (Scott)

You got off lightly, wish that was all I had...

Scott, post this list in the wanted (http://forums.sv650.org/forumdisplay.php?f=114) section as someone out there is bound to have something you need. Also have a search on Ebay, you will find most of the things on there too. Just work on the must have to be on the road first, cosmetic damage can be done at a later date.
Cheers guys.
What did you end up with Dave?
I consider myself pretty lucky really, appart from nearly meeting the reaper on day two (apparently, so the wife tells me), I have gone from strength to strength and feel pretty good now (morphine permitting!)
Does anyone know if a slip on will need replacing because the end is slightly worn from it's slide! I would say that the wear is about 35% on one corner,
Regards
Sounds Like we're lucky to have you on here... Welcome, i expect you'll notch up your post count while your recovering!! :-) Does the wife know your planning on fixing your bike and getting back on ASAP? :-o
Rich
Bad luck mate. At least you're recovering - those were nasty injuries.
Sounds like your bike has similar damage to mine. Have you had it checked on a jig? Got mine checked by a local place and the yokes were twisted also. Plastics shouldn't be a problem to source / repair. Rear brake levers are like hens teeth though!

Glad you're relatively ok, and welcome to the forum!
Are you refering to the end can?
If it's been worn through it'll need replacing.

glad you are ok-ish, i did the same thing but luckily on a lesson so not my bike and only going about 35-40 in the wet and just slid about and do no serious damage
get well soon
Blimey!
I think you mean a clip on? as in handle bar?
Where are you based? People localy may be able to help you staple the bike back together.

I've got some brand new blue anodised front foot pegs (rider pegs). They are the tapered ones not the round ones. £15 delivered?

What did you end up with Dave?
To this day, four years later, I have a broken femur that will always remain broken due to blood supply and bone damage (the leg was near severed) which needs re-pinning every 14 months. One buggered left ankle (limited movement) and a weak bicep in the left arm after the the nerves snapped.
Everything else from this accident healed up ok....

Wow, I feel lots healthier now! Cheers Dave. Dare I ask how? (i'm expecting words like 'Stunt Man' in your response!)

Sorry Sam, must have been having a Morphine induced moment! I actually meant 'clip on'. It's just the corner of the bar os worn away.

I would like to point out I was wearing full leathers, gloves, helmet, and a knox back protector.
I'm no stunt man, car pulled across in front of me with 10 meters between us on a 60 limit road (I was doing 55mph before you ask). I went straight into the left hand side of the car, got my ankle caught in the spoke of his alloy wheel, my knee was embedded into the mirror area and my left hand side slammed against the pillar.
The bike and car briefly welded together as I went over, with my left leg trapped between the two, the femur snapped then shattered (literally like glass) before the car and bike separated. The femur tore through the muscles, ligaments, and skin. I would have severed the leg if it wasn't for one tendon (which was half torn). My left hand was trapped between the grip and clutch as i started to go over, this caused the nerves in my left shoulder to stretch and snap. The left Tib and Fib suffered eleven breaks each and the ankle was shattered into an unrecognisable pile of bones on the X-ray. I broke all but a couple of ribs against the pillar of the car and punctured a lung. Unfortunately I landed on the bonnet of another car and broke my right shoulder (the socket, ball and blade). The impact from the left followed by the landing on the right shattered my pelvis into thirteen pieces.
I had a big accident 3 years earlier when I got hit from the side and run over, this buggered my right leg up a bit also (it is now the favoured/strongest leg despite its injuries).
I still have a limp, as you might guess, and every now and again the ankle plays me up. However, I commute to work everyday on my SV650S and I still blast around on the SV800S whenever I want.
I hope you do heal soon mate, it does take along time for even some of the simplest breaks to heal, but you need to make sure you life style is right. No smoking, very limited on the drinking, and exercise! I should never have survived that last big one, ever consultant i have met has said the same. I lost way to much blood, and my internal organs were all over the place. I am a Orthopaedic and Neurological case study, the human body can take a lot of abuse, but more importantly in can bounce back just as good.
I wish you all the best.
Sh*t the bed Dave! I bet that hurt!!!
You have some balls to be still riding after that! Fair play to you.

true, a mate had a similar crash a couple of years before i met him and tells me he's getting a 'blade as soon as his arm starts working!
thing is, accidents happen. You could cop for it crossing the road, or sitting in a tailback on the motorway in your car, or any number of reasons.
Do your test, pass it and ride carefully, take your time for a while. My little accident put me in critical care, and it was touch and go for a while due to internal bleeding. HOwever, my accident was entirely my fault, caused through a lack of experience, snatching at the front brake, too much speed in the wrong place on a damp road with a worn out front tyre. I slid into a car, which was unfortunate. Had I just slid down the road I would have been unhurt due to good clothing, as it happens, i was badly hurt, but the good clothing and helmet saved my life.
I have been out of hospital for about 2 weeks now, and I have already got about 90% of the bits to fix the bike. As soon as my leg is fixed, i'm getting back on. Because I love teh bike, and the feeling of freedom and exhilaration from riding.

It took me 16 months to get back onto a bike, 10 to walk (although with a bad limp). I am taking a two week holiday from riding at the moment, no particular (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=116966) reason... ;)
No matter what you do you can have an accident, you can't wrap yourself in cotton wool, you need to enjoy life.

Had to have muscles sewn back together and months of operations to repair some of the nerves.

Nah... different accident, turned across a main road in front of me and nearly severed my leg.
