Paint repair - advice needed

My bike was reversed into a few weeks ago and knocked over on its side (I wasn't on it). Didn't really want the hassle of going through the insurance so thought I'd have a go myself with the repairs.
Replaced mirror, indicator and brake lever no problem.

There was a bit of paintwork damage to the bikini fairing that I thought I'd have a crack at myself.....you can guess where this ends up :(

Ordered a tin of aerosol from ebay (think it was YD8 and the small bit of damage has now spread to half the fairing as I keep overspraying the **** ups I'm making.

Anyway, applied the basecoat, and then after lots of t-cutting, whacked some clear lacquer on top. Trouble is, paint really doesn't match and seems flat rather than metallic. I know silver is notoriously hard to match in but the colour just doesn't seem anywhere near to a close match.

Kind words of advice (in simpletons terms) would be appreciated.

And before any 'told you so's, I know I should have had it done properly :laughat:

just spray the whole faring... or take it to a professional ..

and dont use blooody t-cut... go to a spray supply shop and get some G3 made by farecla they will know what you are on about. also dont cut the paint before you put the laqure on do it after the laqure...

Ok right, thanks - will give that a try......I know I should have got it done properly...hindsight and all. Its just that the original damage was pretty small - should have used a touch up stick really but didn't want the 'raised' edge you always get.

The whole boats hull Im on is metalic grey, so i see how hard it is to get a match

First up make sure the under coat is the same color,
Then dust on the silver,
If you applie to much it will go dark. if this happens stop let it dry for a day or so, sand it back and dust again.
2 runs at the most let it dry for a few hours dust again.
The finish should be a bit rough not shiny at all.
remove the tape and then paint the whole thing with clear.
It is all most impossible to get the egdes right of the silver or any metalic paint, so as above its best to do the whole thing.
Doing a small section tape up the area and give yourself a foot or so allaround the area to start and stop on.

I blame the discovery channels on Sky....they make spraying look so easy :rolleyes:
