View Full Version : Hard to find neutral

Need you help here please.

Over the past couple of weeks it has become more and more difficult to find neutral when i have to stop at junctions and lights. Sometimes i have to turn the bike off and then back on just to get it into neutral.

Is this normal for an sv or is there a problem with the clutch or gear box :(

Also do you use grease or oil to lubricate the gear lever as the book say's grease but surely this would collect all the **** that is kicked up from the road?

I am still learning so sorry again if it is a stupid question

Sorry if this has been asked before but i am a bit worried.

Make sure the chain is adjusted correctly - that can cause this.

Have you tried the good ol' Neutral Shuffle, rocking the bike back and forth?

Hows the clutch lever adjustment?

look behind the plastic cover to the right of your alternator housing(left hand side) I can bet your bottom dollar that there is a build up of crap behind it. Poke all the black goo out with a pointy stick and it should help. Also, when was the last time you had an oil change, one of mine behaves better when I do that too

Had an oil change when i bought it in may, also might be a bit thick but have you a photo of where you mean with the alternator housing as i don,t have a clue. I think i need to do a basic course in maintance any know if there is anywhere near blackburn that run thses courses.

err left hand side there is a big round part of the engine with a plug on it. To the right hand side of that should be a plastic cover( think you gear lever mechanism goes under it).........

goes off in search of pic

right ignore the rust as its not there anymore but here it is nad what it looks like behind it!http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb45/loubi650/2008_01260010.jpg

plastic part you need to take off is on the floor. Front sprocket and gear spindle is where the crap congregates

Give it a rev sometimes that free's everything up. Make sure the clutch is right, it might appear fine but if there is any sort of drag in the clutch it can make the gear box a bitch!

Be glad it isnt an Aprilia. Thats the only pain in the ****... finding neutral, its like the bike doesnt want to stop lol.

I would have said check how tight/loose your chain is. Clean any crap out too! You managed to sort it and the bike suffle is great for getting into first/neutral when stood at lights etc

So which bit is it that i need to regrease then.

Is all this **** due to having a scott oiler fitted or will it just be from riding in the wet and picking up **** from the road?

dizzyblonde

picking up crud off the road matey, and fling off the chain. You need to grease every thing that moves basically. Including the moving parts on the gear lever. Oh and if you can get some grease down the clutch cable....but thats a faff and a half and theres a nack

eeerrr dunno...lol...thats YCs department. Something stronger than WD..mind you that wouldn't harm down the clutch cable. You headin over Squires way this eve?

Right start the begining with the basics.

1. Chain tension
2. Oil level
3. Clutch adjustment

If none of that fixes it, then start looking at the other stuff posted above, but I'd bet you a shiny english pound that 1 of the 3 things above will solve your problem.

I've found the easy to check/fix issues with not getting into neutral are (in no order).

1) Chain set incorrectly.
2) Clutch set incorrectly.
3) Gummed up gear lever pivot - this also causes 1st-2nd issues.

+1 to all comments and great pics but lets not forget that clutch adjustment is not only the cable adjustment top and bottom but is also the arm angle position shown on page 1.14 (curvy model) haynes. Cable adjustment alone sorts out cable stretch but the full adjustment will take care of and adjust for clutch plate wear as well.

Just want to say thanks to everyone how give me helpfull comments.

I have managed to fix the problem and i feel very good in myself for having a go and doing it myself.

In the end it was a piece of pi## but if you don't have a clue to start with it's a different matter. I realise now there is more to biking than just riding the things, you have to take time to look after them. My new haynes manual will come in very handy i think :p.

Right off now to strip my engine down and give it a complet overhaul.

OK maybe not!!!!:D:D

I had exactly the same issue. I adjusted the tension on my clutch cable (tighter) and it sorted it out.

Mines a real itch to get into neutral now, I have to rev the bike to about 3000 rpm then it slots in. Might have to investigate some of the ideas in this thread.

Try adjusting the clutch at the lever end thats what did it for me ;)
