Hello to all, this is my first post.
I found the forum yesterday whilst investigating a gear change problem and found a great deal of advice in the posts, fixing the problem this morning (clean and lube the external gearchange components).
I have a 1999 SV650S, bought in 2003 with about 7000 miles on the clock.
It now has 69,355.
Riden most days all through the year.
Never had a dealer service since I bought it ( Im a helicopter mech so nuts and bolts don't scare).
In the 5 years we have been together it has only let me down twice, both snapped chains (due ti fit and forget scottoiler!).
Any more high mileage bikes out there?

And thanks again for the advice I got from your posting.

Mine's comparatively young at a shade over 40K on the clocks (K4), most of that has been put on in the past 2 years. I expect my mileage to go up to around 20-25K per year for the next 2 years. Nice to see another bike which is actually used. There are several SVs with over 100,000 on the engine, it seems so long as they are looked after, the engines run forever- it's the other bits that wear out first. :)

Welcome to the forum, BTW.

The SV800 has over 98,500 miles on the clock, she is used and abused alot but is well loved in the end (probably more than a helicopter).

My K5 has done 36,500 miles but they were all done in the first 2 years, it's barely moved out of the garage for the last 12 months whilst i've been using the ducati.

Mines just started hunting on the Rev counter... time for a balance me thinks, but thats what I get for adding another 120 odd miles to it last night.

3,500 miles for me :(/:)? luke & daz were taking the p1ss because my tyres have squared off quite alot - is this normal after only 3.5k miles? I am a big lad but I wouldn't have thought it would have affected the back tyre so badly... gonna get some new tyres next week... if I don't buy a new welder first?! one or the other - what would you do?!

I'd leave them, I road with tyres that where so square they stood up on there own, only then did it start affecting the handling noticeably.

Mines a 1999 coming up to 30,000 miles. Had one reg/rec fail, replaced a cam follower / cam bucket thing the other week (the hard coating / hard casing material had worn off - I'll post a pic if anyone is interested) and had a tyre valve decide not to work properly and let my front tyre down.

Otherwise, its as sound as a pound and I expect I'll be throwing at elast 100,000 miles on it before it gets relegated to "track day's only"

Only just getting in to its stride at those sort of miles... as long as you keep changing the oil at regular intervals you should be fine. I think there was a guy on the US side that had his up to 138,000 but had only been doing 6k oil changes, in the end the engine popped. Most of the components where just outside there tolerances and that's what caused it to give up. So in 138k he did 23 oil changes, where as it should have had 33.5, so 10 and a half oil changes missed for about 42,000 miles of extra wear. I wouldn't be surprised to see 200k out of the engine, the clutch basket on the other hand, looking at the way mine notched and another one I had seems to start going at about 50-70k.

Mines done around 70k. Only mechanical issue I have had was the clutch push rod worn down. I've had (and still have) a few electrical issues which I am in the process of sorting.

It's never been dealer serviced either. Oil has been changed every 2500 miles and filter every other oil change.

2500 miles... what made you pick that amount?

How cheap is cheap oil? My last lot was 21quid... so new stuff from a mate which is the newest spec or something.

Halfords cheap oil? I had some in my bike when i first got it as a flush-through, only stayed in there for 3000 miles

Last time i changed my oil, it was a little over due (few hundred miles). I'll be changing it every 5000 now, with a new filter every time

well at 50k on a 99 SV you'bll only have covered 5.5k a year which is less than my SV which is at 6.7k on it's first birthday (2morrow). Personally to get "High Mileage" out of a motorbike it has to cover at least 10k a year if not more.
